We decided on hang gliding for my son's 18th! Easy to find. The airport is just off of I-69 in Wharton. Just plop the airport into your nav and you're there. Upon arriving at 3pm on a Sunday, there were a few hang gliders preparing to fly. We watched them take off, sore, and land. We met "Bart", the flyer that would be flying with my son. Super nice, personable guy! My son is autistic. I think they were a little apprehensive about taking him up. Even still, I appreciate the way they handled it. Cleary communicated their concern and what needed to happen in order to ensure everyone's safety. I felt completely at ease putting my most precious thing in there hands. Watching him take off was awesome! He seemed to really enjoy it! A few negatives... It took 20 to 30 minutes to check out. I don't really understand why. Everyone just seemed to lull about between take offs. And they charge $40 for pictures. The camera takes a snap every 10 seconds I believe so you get a lot of pictures. However the pictures are all very similar. They're given to you on one of those old timey memory cards that look like oversized SIM cards. Not cool. Oh my gosh, these guys are great!!! Seriously, we were in the Jackson area for a week, did a TON of different things and this was by far the highlight of our trip!!! Wifey went up to 4,000 ft, while our 12 yr. old nephew and I went the 2,000 ft route (because of incoming weather) and all of us had the time of our lives! And to think, I wasn't even planning on going up! I'm not actually a big risk taker, wifey wanted to go and I was simply planning to tag along to take pics, but after reading a bunch of reviews on Trip Advisor about how relaxing and un-sky diving-like hang gliding can be, I thought, what the heck ... I'll give it a try! ... and I am so glad that I did. Bart, the "cowboy", or rather the fantastic Dutch import who goes tandem with you talks you through the entire thing, so by the time you're actually gliding, you're truly relaxed and able to enjoy all the amazing beauty that Wyoming has to offer. Okay, wifey wasn't totally relaxed because 4,000 ft is really f'ing high - dare devils, that one's for you! - but the nephew and I wanted to do it again as soon as we landed and even wifey said that despite her minor freakout, Bart did a great job distracting her until she calmed down :) In addition to the glide being uber fun, you don't have to jump off a cliff to get moving! You actually strap in to the little sleeping bag thingy on the ground, Bart's partner in crime, Tiki, tows you up from a motorized glider and once you reach your desired height you simply detach from her glider and descend back down to earth. Finally, just a few planning notes. They take you up one at a time, so if you're going with a large group, plan accordingly and be sure to plan ahead too! If you know you wanna go gliding during vacation, call early in your trip. It's just Tiki and Bart and they can only take so many folks up a day. Oh yeah, and plan to drop $40 extra bucks on pictures. A Go Pro that snaps shots every 5 seconds is attached to the front of your glider, so for just two $20 bills you get some EPIC shots that will make you appear cool for years to come! I'm a intermediate (USPHA Hang-3) Hang glider pilot looking for a little fun on the weekend during a business trip, so I decided I would get my aerotow rating with Cowboy UP! Hang gliding. The couple that runs the business Tiki and Bart (I Found out later) are legends in the Hang Gliding world, and gave me the disciplined, active instruction I was looking for. They put me through Aerotow ground school, two tandem flights and 3 solos over two days to get my Aerotow rating. They kept it fun, safe and it was fantastic to learn from such a skilled pair of pilots. read more

I had purchased a Groupon and left them a voicemail three weeks ago. They never called back and I tried calling multiple times. Eventually I contacted Groupon and they were unable to reach the business also, so they refunded my purchase. So I can't say how hang gliding was, but from a customer service standpoint my experience with this company was a disaster. Now I'm looking for another hang gliding company in Texas read more

Since most of the posts here are reviews of one-off flights, I thought it might be helpful for me to talk about the lesson packages instead. I've just completed my first solo flight after having spent the last few months learning from Mark and Ty (who flew tandem with me) and Tiki (who pilots the tug). Throughout the whole process they were in constant communication with me and with each other about my progress and what I needed to work on. All of the instructors did a great job of both encouraging me in order to to keep my confidence up, as well as giving me critical feedback so that I progressed safely. The regulars who fly at Cowboy Up are always around to share their wisdom and their stories, and the whole process has been extremely rewarding. I can't recommend enough that if you've ever thought about learning to fly, you call them and give it a try. read more

I had a few problems, but I'll start by saying that the actual flight was fun with gorgeous views. But I'll never go back. First, they were running over an hour behind. But the weather was perfect, so that's not a huge deal. Second, this seemed like a great activity to capture on my GoPro, so I took it. And when I saw a GoPro mount on the glider, I thought all was good. But when I asked if I could use mine, I was given all sorts of excuses about "safety". I'm not sure how spending 30 seconds replacing their GoPro with mine is a safety issue. But they were happy to sell me their footage for a hefty price. But the HUGE problem was that when we were taking off, the tow rope broke at about 325 feet and we had to make an emergency landing. Once we got back to the airport, they just retied the rope like it was no big deal. No acknowledgement, no apology. Nothing. I couldn't tell if they just didn't care, or it happens so much that they are numb to it. read more

To make a long story short: If they cancel on you, they consider it your problem - and keep your money. I intended the hang gliding adventure to be a gift for my father, but after the third time Cowboy Up canceled on us for no given reason, he decided he couldn't make the long drive in the slim chance he'd get to fly. After a legitimate rain cancelation, one more no-reason cancelation and a lot of them ignoring my calls, I told them we really needed to get this done, or I needed to get some money back. They told me tough luck on the money, and I had one more chance at a flight since they had been so 'lenient' with me about rescheduling. I thought that was a pretty gutsy way to say they were keeping my money and not doing what they got paid for. By some miracle I did end up getting a nice flight on my "last chance," but it wasn't worth the stress of putting up with these crooked people. read more

I went with the Events & Adventures group to Cowboy Up. This was my first experience hang gliding, and it was amazing! The folks at CU were super! My friends wanted to go skydiving, I was like, uh nah I'd rather fly than fall. So I had a tandem flight with Cowboy Up. After that first flight, I knew that flying hang gliders was something I wanted to pursue. I ended up taking lessons with Bart and Tiki and had my first solo within about 6 months. I could have learned to fly solo faster but things got in the way, work, moving,.... Anyways, I love flying ...it's all I think about now. You HAVE to try it!!! read more

I would highly recommend this place to everyone. My husband and I went a few weeks ago and we are bringing our moms back for Mother's Day. We showed up 30 minutes late and they were so sweet and accommodating that our experience was extremely stress free and fun. They have a go pro on the hang glider and it takes a photo of your every 10 seconds and once your done you can buy all 200 photos for $40, which was worth it. We did a discovery flight so we got to go up to 3,000 ft in the air and on my first attempt we just barely didn't reach it so after a 20 minute glide down they apologized and took me up again to reach at least 3,000 (I would have never noticed but was ecstatic to go up again). The pilot even teaches you and lets you steer for a bit and if you are scared he'll let it look like you are for the pictures. :) A Blast. Very relaxing and not scary at all. It's gliding, not falling, you just enjoy the scenery not even realizing you're slowly descending. Smooth take offs and landings too. read more
