This particular area in and around the town of Gila bend has so many sites of both ancient and…read morerecent cultural interests. Although considered a Hohokam rock art site, This area is on the extreme western edge of the Hohokam cultural area. East of the area, petroglyphs take on more typical Hohokam characteristics, while petroglyphs farther west take on more Patayan characteristics. Found here and in nearby areas of the Gila River are petroglyphs of Archaic origin. The whole area along the Colorado and Gila River has.large amount of indigenous culture from cultural markings to ruins. In terms of more recent Western pioneer involvement this area bears the inscriptions of historic passers-by. Juan Bautista de Anza passed near here during his 1775-1776 expedition, followed by the Mormon Battalion in the 1840s, the Butterfield Overland Mail, and countless numbers of pioneers. During World War II, General George Patton used this area as headquarters for tank training. There's also the Oatman pioneer cemetery. There is little protection for the area from vandals and there is some push to make the area on National Monument.

To get there, just follow the sign. The road is paved but entering the Painted Rock Petroglyph it will be dirt. The entrance fee is $3 and there is a box to pay to get in. It is on an honor system. Along the area, there are desert camping amenities and camping overnight is $8. The Painted Rock Petroglyph Site is magnificent on how the first people who habitat the land recorded their living. There are more recent carvings from people who passed through the site and there are informational plaques around that tell the history of the area.

We did the glamping in the airstreams with our 4-year old and had the best time! The airstreams…read morewere soo nicely redone and super comfortable. We peeked in about 5 of the trailers and each was very well done and uniquely remodeled. They provide adult-sized bicycles to ride around in and we had the foresight to bring my son's small bicycle. Then you have pretty much free reign to explore. We rode over to the 3 playgrounds and also the petting zoo to check out the animals. Back at the trailers, we used the provided BBQ to make dinner and the fire pit to make s'mores. The owners dropped off complimentary pieces of pie for each person which was a nice touch, and answered questions about the history of our trailers and the farm. It was clearly a passion project. Before going to bed, we placed an order for breakfast to be delivered at our trailer. We had Biscuits and Gravy, an omelette, and French toast - all yummy. After breakfast we took another another bike ride to the "U Pick it Garden" and then the bakery. Looking forward to doing this again soon. The trailers all had great A/C which was awesome. The only thing I will caution is that our particular trailer (Westwood Caravan) had such a small bathroom that anyone that might be a larger build would not find it feasible to fit in. However, all the other trailers that we looked in had bathrooms with plenty of space and did not have this issue and could accommodate all sizes.

Make sure you are hydrated for the long challenging hikes in the desert. Be careful not to swim under waterfalls as there are several drownings every year. The drive to get there is 2 hours north of Phoenix followed by a 15 mile drive on a very bumpy dirt road. You need a 4x4 for sure.

Tonto National Park is located about 1 hr - 1hr and 45 min from the Phoenix area. The difference in time is due to the size of the park. At 2.9 million acres, Tonto National Forest is the largest national forest in Arizona. Tonto is the 6th largest of the USDA National Forests. About 20 minutes into the forest, we lost cell phone reception. If using Google Maps to get to your destination, I recommend downloading the offline map(s.) Water levels were low enough in the creek crossings that cars were able to get to the site we stayed at without any issues. We camped over a weekend at the Cave Creek Group Campground. This campground must be rented, and is only rented as a group camp site. There is a central area with cover picnic tables/ramadas, grills, and group fire pits. Some of the campsites have their own fire pits as well. There is no water at this campground. Vault toilets. One toilet for men and one for women. While toilet paper is provided, it was not enough for the weekend. Someone in our group had a satellite phone. They were able to ask someone who was coming up late Saturday to bring more. The way the group camp site is situated, make for a secluded area. The scenery on the drive in and out was lovely. Driving in from the Phoenix area, it was nice to have a change in scenery. The landscape around the Cave Creek Campground has a less desert feel. The campground is surrendered with trees. Beprepared to take it slow. The road to the Cave Creek Group Campground is winding and, at times, narrow. There was a hill that was almost a yellowish orange from wildflowers. (It photographed with more green.) Coming around the corner and being met with the sight of that hill was a breathtaking moment. As for animals, we saw some random birds, lizards and cows.

I was surprised, it was a large area to hike. The Bureau of Land Management manages this area. Camping overnight, off-road vehicles, and dispersed camping are allowed. Additionally, you can camp with an RV, trailer, or car for fourteen days. Make sure to check - www.blm.gov for more information about recreation use.

No grass but very nicely adorned with rock gravel and desert tolerating plants. We appreciated how clean the grounds were with zero trash or debris. There were no picnic tables but that was also ok since we bring suitable tables. This will be our spot whenever we visit our friends in nearby Goodyear. We have a rooftop tent setup -- which is a very common form of camping now -- but were told it's not allowed. Their rules clearly haven't kept up with how people camp today. It was midnight, our kids were exhausted, and this was the only place around, yet no one was available to help despite signs saying "24-hour check-in." Everything is self-serve with a wall full of rules, and no real support for travelers passing through. If you're road-tripping, overlanding, or camping with a rooftop tent or small trailer, beware -- this park is RVs only and not traveler-friendly.
