In zoom meetings leading up to the out-patient procedure, he again explained what would happen, answered questions (even a couple I'd already asked, and gave me information about what would happen post-op. Also, I cannot give enough compliments to the staff at the UCLA Santa Monica Outpatient Surgery Center, where both the sleep endoscopy and the device implantation were done. I had been doing my own research on aftercare (because I had no choice), and when I mentioned this, I was told that research isn't always reliable. That response is unacceptable -- if the doctor had given me proper instructions, I wouldn't have needed to research anything. The written instructions they eventually emailed me were vague and generic, listing foods like pasta, eggs, and cheese as appropriate starting points -- foods that require tongue manipulation and are typically served hot, neither of which is appropriate in the early days after a tongue excision with sutures. Patients deserve to feel supported after surgery. I did not. I hope future patients are treated with more care and dignity than I was.
