I've been on plenty of whitewater rafting trips with a lot of outfitters. Crabapple is by far the most organized and professional I've ever been with. Plus our guide Matt this past trip on the Deerfield Monroe Bridge run was terrific.

Heaven is a post rafting beer overlooking the river.

I came here with my son and two nephews, and this is easily one of those family vacation experiences we will be talking about for years to come, and it may serve as a gateway drug to finding more and more whitewater rafting opportunities, all thanks to the incredible service of Crab Apple Whitewater. Easily more than five stars. Ten stars. A billion stars. A galaxy of stars and supernovas and quasars rotating in a vast and endless universe. You get the idea. This company is awesome. Jennifer the owner has staffed her company with the most incredibly friendly, down-to-earth people you'll ever meet. Our guide, Charlotte, was fantastic. Wise beyond her years, professional, knowledgeable, easy to talk to on the stretches of lazy river in between rapids, and an inspiring, true leader. We did the Deerfield River Fife Brook section in Massachusetts, which was about ten miles (normally 7) and two hours. The minimum age is 8 with most rapids being class 2 and one class 3, so it's good for beginners and/or kids. All of the staff are great with kids. My son is 9 and had a great time. They also offer the Monroe Bridge section with mostly class 3 and 4's which has a minimum age 15. The cost also includes a meal afterwards, and I had the salmon with salad, noodles and cornbread. Delicious and the perfect way to end the day. Can't recommend this place enough, and hope to see their other locations someday as well.

This was a new experience for my family. My wife and child (12) were apprehensive to say the least after watching some videos online. We signed up for the Fife Brook section, which had level 1-3 rapids. Their website said that it was appropriate for ages 8 and up (this was a comfort for my wife and sealed the deal). When we arrived, the staff was incredibly warm and welcoming, making sure to make a personal connection with everyone. We were fitted for safety equipment, and were able to rent a wet suit top for our son who was already chilly before getting wet ($10). During our bus ride to the launch point, further safety instructions were given to make sure that we were all on the same page before starting. After the bus ride we met our guide (Ethan), who has been with the company for 2 years. Like the employees we initially met, he made sure to connect with everyone on his boat. Ethan was not only knowledgeable about the area, but a great conversationalist with plenty of dad jokes to pass the time. In between rapids, we were able to float down the river, enjoying sites while being given a history lesson on the area. We even saw 2 river celebrities, Justin Beaver and Sigourney Beaver! We got to swim (the few that were willing to jump in and get hoisted out like a sack of potatoes), as well as having a balancing competition on spinning rafts. When the trip finished, we rode back to the shop, ate a delicious homemade lunch (included in the price) and watched a slideshow of our adventure. We started with nerves about what was to come and ended with smiles on our faces and anticipation of our next trip with Crab Apple. Ethan, thanks again, and good luck at school this year!

Fantastic experience! Can't say enough good things about these guys! Roger's our guide, full of passion, professionalism, knowledge and most importantly, fun! If you got a group of 5-8 ppl looking for a day full of laughters and joy, look no further, you're not gonna regret it! Well worth everything! They worth 10 stars if yelp let me XD

    Family outing

Absolute BLAST! The trip is really fun but that is just half of it. Booking was easy, arriving, checking in, and getting your gear was effortless. The trip was exciting, made better by skilled and friendly guides. After your trip, you get to change into warm clothes and have a tasty meal. Then, everyone, all the boats gets together to review the photos from the day. Fun and funny. You leave excited, tired, and feeling like you've made new friends. I can't recommend this Crab Apple Whitewater enough.

This was a great way to enjoy the river with family. It is clear at every turn that this family owned & operated business prioritizes a fun, inclusive, family experience. The staff is excellent and exudes care from the guides to clerks to owners. From big things like the ear of check in and booking, to the home cooked meal, to remembering our names and where we are fun. It felt more like a camp experience than a raft guiding excursion. Lots of humor and care goes into the structure of the day. The guides are well trained and they make even the slow would be boring parts of the river fun with water fights and "practice" river maneuvers. A totally great experience.

Love this place!!! Staff is always friendly and super helpful. I've been here 4 times for rafting and it is always a blast!!! Food has changed for the better over the years for sure!!! I'm going back with friends in August for some more fun!!! They took safety precautions for COVID like masks, gloves, food was in individual packing with our own groups designated picnic table. During these COVID times and all the restrictions in place some places are struggling. Just wanted to shout out & spread some positivity.

Absolutely amazing day on the water!! I booked the Deerfield River-Monroe Bridge Section Rafting (Sunday Sept 2022) and it completely exceeded my expectations. Frank was an amazing guide for our raft of 6 (3 groups who didn't know each other prior to the trip, including some first timers). We rolled through class 2, 3, and 4 rapids and he kept everyone safe and smiling! Ended the day with a top-notch pulled pork sandwich and a few too many brownies. 10/10 would recommend-- thanks for the great experience we will definitely be returning again!

Crabapple booked my trip for the wrong location. They refused to refund. We booked a rafting trip for Charlemont with Carrie over the phone. We drove almost 3 hours to Charlemont and the shop was closed. We called Crabapple and Sharon claimed our trip was actually booked for the Vermont location. I told her we were pretty explicit about booking a trip in Charlemont over the phone with Carrie, and asked for a refund. She refused and became frustrated. I asked her to check with Carrie, and she refused again and hung up the phone. Be very careful when booking your trip with Crabapple. They may get the details of your trip wrong and they have an aggressive no-refunds policy.

    Big "hit" at Dragon's Tooth

My experience with Crab Apple Whitewater on Saturday 9/3/22 was incredible. My friends and I rafted on the Monroe Bridge trip. I think the best thing about rafting this stretch of River is that the rapids get bigger as the day goes on. This really gives everyone a chance to improve their paddling and get comfortable before heading to the bigger rapids. Our group was mixed with some having experience rafting while others were brand new and a little nervous. Our guides, Frank and Zach really knew how to make everyone feel safe, while having a great time. ( We laughed so much my and hurt by the end of the day) By the time we were back at the base having lunch, everyone was already planning our trip next summer. 10 out of 10, we definitely recommend. : ) Looking forward to returning next summer- hopefully with a bigger crew. Thanks again to everyone at Crab Apple for making our day so memorable.

We took a beautiful afternoon tour along the Housatonic River our first day at the Berkshires for the week and what a great start it was. We got to learn and see how the beavers create their dams and mud piles, as well as see turtles that were hanging out on the tree limbs along our way. Hillary was also gracious enough to provide cold bottled waters and while apples to snack on, which was a nice pick me up! Though the tour was only supposed to be 2hrs it went a little over about 45min and we didn't feel rushed at all as the current was sort of strong and since my husband and I had shared a canoe, we had to coordinate quite a bit - especially going back to shore. Overall I would recommend this tour to my family and friends and really appreciate the kindness and bubbly attitude these two ladies had I share. Thank you!

Gave us waterproof packs for our phones and valuables, cold water bottles, and apples (which are great snack on the river). You can tailor the tour for the length you prefer, and Hilary gives you basics and tips for rowing. This is a long historic slow flowing river and perfect for our first kyack tour. Lots of interesting habitats, flowering plant life, and animals (fish, painted turtles basking, beavers on shore). Went in July and no mosquitos or blackflies. I would like to go back for the evening tour to observe the beaver families in action.

Rainbow Reservoir - The algae choked waters of early September at the rainbow reservoir

First you should know that Rainbow Reservoir is not at 2 Walters Way, and that is a PRIVATE Road…read moreabout three houses before the entrance to the boat launch ramp. Rainbow Reservoir is a part of the Farmington River, and thus the blue algae bloom that happens in very hot years with low rainfall is not due to the very few land owners with property abutting the reservoir. There are miles and miles of the river that starts in Massachusetts, the longest portion of which is the West Branch, making the river a total of 84 miles long. Along all these miles, the river abuts all kinds of different properties from farms to industrial and residential. I am not saying that folks with abutting properties to Rainbow Reservoir don't contribute to the problem, but they are a drop in the hat compared to everything else that line the miles of the Farmington River. Another point I would like to mention is about the draining of Rainbow Reservoir. This is not done by "the town" as one reviewer said, and in fact even officials of DEEP have told me the State of Connecticut has very little control over the dam due to grandfather clauses. The dam is the property of the Farmington River Power Company, (the sole reason there is a reservoir in the first place, is because they built the dam in 1928 to make hydroelectric power). The power company drains the reservoir to do maintenance on the dam and turbines, and seemingly have little regard for the eco system damage they may or may not be doing. They also have little regard for the boaters and loath the land owners that line what they call "The Pond". Those of you who complain about the "high powered boats" may like to know that those folks have been using Rainbow Reservoir to ski on since the early 70's, a time when nobody used it to kayak the reservoir, and there were very few other folks using the reservoir. The reason the skiers continue to use "The Rez" is that it is one of the best places in CT to water ski and barefoot waterski due to the flat calm water. Those who waterski on Rainbow Reservoir actually have boats that purposely make small wakes for skiing, (which is obviously better for kayaks), and are geared down to pull skiers, not go fast. These skiers co-existed with fisherman in boats very well for years, because they both wanted the same thing, calm flat water. Now that anybody can be on the water with a cheap kayak, the kayakers, (aka new comers), complain about the boaters, and fill the long parking spots designed for vehicles with trailers, with single cars, with no regard to the fact that they are using a spot designed for a trailer rig, even when they kayak in groups with multiple cars and could stack their cars in one or two of the trailer spots to use less spots. They pay no boat registration fee that goes to building and maintaining boat launch ramps, nor do they pay anywhere near the property taxes and other taxes the boaters do on their rigs that go towards boating and fishing. Kayakers also need to realize that Rainbow Reservoir is a river and it is generally narrow, so 90% of the boaters use the Res in a counter clockwise direction for safety reasons, thus they do not want to veer off course to avoid a kayak and hit an oncoming boat instead. By trying to kayak down the middle of the reservoir, often in large groups spread 3 or 4 kayaks wide, on the wrong side, they put themselves and others in a dangerous position. If they would stay closer to the edges, and stay single file as the boaters generally do, it would be much safer for all. One last point that a kayaker probably doesn't think of, and that is draft. Rainbow Res has a lot of shallow spots, and the boaters cannot go everywhere it might seem like they could to the average person. These folks know Rainbow, and know what their boats draw for water. They have to stay in that "channel" so to speak. By the way, so that you don't think I'm anti kayak by this review, let it be known that we own four kayaks, one for each family member, and I sell them for a living as well. Share the water, there's room for everyone if we want to be respectful towards one another.

If you like fishing, I am sharing my fishing spot especially because I need to write good & useful Yelp reviews :) My spot is to the left of the rainbow reservoir boat launch. The boat is infrequent but the jet ski is a bit annoying to fishermen. However, the spot is productive if you can cast far enough, there is a steep drop off that goes down about 15-20 feet, all kinds of fish there. I've taken my kids there many times, caught sun fish, bass, carp, catfish etc. all at the same spot. Don't eat the bass!!! High Mercury content. Ok to eat sunfish & carp, but carefully check the fish for parasite as I've seen them last year, they look like little grain of rice but yellow in color, yikes! Other than that, it's really fun spot to take the kids & you can BBQ right there as well!
