Auntie Yo and I celebrating the 103rd MFJ Day together at Cracker Barrel in Marion, IL.
    Kindra S.

I would like to give a huge virtual hug to Manager Elizabeth, Server Hailey, and everyone at Cracker Barrel in Marion, IL that made 9/24/2022 successful. This was my first time visiting this particular restaurant. I invited a very dear friend/church member (I call her Auntie Yo) to dinner and she asked to eat at Cracker Barrel. Auntie Yo is a warm and generous woman who volunteers with Alzheimer's Association in honor of her late mother (Mary F. Johnson) and does a number of other things in the community. When I learned that today she would be speaking at an event for Alzheimer's and it would have also been her mother's 103rd birthday, I wanted to make sure Auntie Yo was not alone and would feel loved and appreciated. I called Cracker Barrel and spoke to Manager Elizabeth who was immediately willing to help me make sure Auntie Yo felt special and could also celebrate the birthday of her mother today, affectionately known annually as "MFJ Day" by Auntie Yo's family. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly by the hostess and seated immediately. Our server, Hailey, was super friendly and made sure that our order was perfect. Both of our meals were delicious and we had plenty to bring home. Auntie Yo and I enjoyed our dinner and the delicious chocolate cake we were treated to in honor of MFJ Day. On the drive home and in a text message a little later, Auntie Yo repeated how much she really enjoyed the evening. I can really appreciate a restaurant team that will help celebrate the life of a loved one. No matter how old you are, you are always somebody's child. Happy 103rd MFJ Day! If you are ever in Marion, IL, I highly recommend that you stop by Cracker Barrel for a bite to eat and a little shopping. They have takeout options too. Tell them Kindra Speech sent ya.

I had chicken and dumplings with mashed potatoes that tasted terrible and my "side" of apples.

We waited half an hour to get food and when we got it was cold. Overall I will not be going back to a Cracker Barrel again.

There were 3 ladies serving the entire restaurant. From what I could tell, they were responsible for drink orders, bringing out food, bussing tables, and plating desserts and bringing those out too. There are no menus and only 1 option for family style chicken and fish, with a salad, bread, and sides consisting of corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, dumplings, and green beans. They don't tell you this. I had spoken to another guest, so I knew this was the case, but if I hadn't, with this being our first visit, I would have been very confused. We had a very young waitress who was still new. She was doing her best, and I felt bad for her, but we waited for extended periods of time on food, and never had a drink refill. The only thing hot when the food came out was the chicken. All of the sides were barely warm at all. The fish and hush puppies were also not hot. They bring you one piece of chicken each, and then we waited 20+ minutes for additional food once we were able to finally ask the waitress for more. The table next to us ordered desserts when we got our bread and drinks, and they still didn't have them when we had already finished our meal, paid the bill, and were leaving. The waitress explained to them that she had to make the desserts herself and she was slammed with just trying to bring food out and get drink orders and that she was still new. She apologized multiple times, but it's not a good system at all. They need someone bussing tables, so the waitresses can focus on drinks and food. They need a sign that tells you to seat yourself. They need to ask if it's your first visit when they walk up to get your drink order so they can explain how they do things if it's your first visit. The bread and strawberry butter was my favorite part of the meal. The side salad had a good flavorful dressing, but only comes as a bowl of lettuce with a couple grape tomatoes sliced in half. The food had good flavor, even though it was cold and we waited for extended periods of time to receive it. The restaurant was clean. Since you have no menu and no idea what to expect, the prices are $18.95 each, and a 4% up charge for debit or credit cards as of July 2025. Unfortunately, we were not impressed at all and probably would not visit again based on this first experience.

Bill was easy to read. Also took home 2 dinners and there is plenty of chicken in both of them. Don't know what some people's problem is.

There are QR codes on the bar for the beer menu. It isn't accurate, they're out of several. I was told by a staff member (again, it's hard to tell who fills what role so I'll just call them staff members from here on) that they are "locked out" of that account so I should check the board behind the bar. The board lists the flavor and usually the type of beer. It does not list the manufacturer or really any other details. At this point I ordered a beer and the chicken nachos. I received the beer promptly. I finished that one, then another. Still no nachos. After an hour+ and 3 beers, I cashed out and left. At least they never tried to charge me for the nachos. I witnessed numerous dishes returned to the kitchen. There were 2, sometimes 3 staff members for the entire bar and dining room. All were friendly but seemed inexperienced. I witnessed at least 2 on their phones at some point. Last but not least, the atmosphere. The place could be really amazing. When I was there, the bar was sticky. 3 of the lights above the bar were burned out and the fixtures, obviously intended for old looking filament bulbs had bright LEDs installed giving the ambiance of a hospital waiting room. The recessed can style lighting in the rest of the establishment wasn't much better. The stools at the bar are seriously worn. It's almost worth visiting for the spectacle...almost. Update: they did charge me for the nachos. I misread the receipt that night.

The place looked great, and I had high expectations. But after one visit, that was my last. Bleh! First, they had not the friendliest staff. They were all chatting with each other and not very friendly to the customer. Not very attentive to the customer either. Wth? Where is the Mexican pride and Mexican warmth?? For this alone, I give them a 1 star. 0 if I could. I was born in Mexico, so I know good Mexican food. In my opinion, the food was very TexMex. More Tex than Mex, if you catch my drift (did they get all their food from Sysco??). I found the food to be quite insipid. The salsa tasted like it came out of a can, lacking the amazing flavors that generally give Mexican food that oomf. The fajitas were nicely presented, and the meat was good, but the accompanying rice and beans were not very tasty. Come on dudes, where's the pride in the food? Where is the Mexican seasoning?? Where is the Mexican love??? I was extremely disappointed. I guess the appeal of the place is the alcohol. But as a traditionalist who loves good Mexican food, I give this place a 1 for the taste of the food. I didn't partake in alcohol since I was just driving through. The only redeeming grace of this place was the decor and ambiance. They get a 4 or a 5. So, if you factor in the 1 for service, the 1 for the food, and the 5 for decor, I give them 3 stars. It is unlikely I'll be back here again.
