Come for the beer! Do not come for wine or liquor (duh, I know, it's an ALEHOUSE!) because they do NOT serve it. They offer 6-8 beers on tap and have a 6-page bottle list. My husband was a big fan of the Voodoo Cowbell Imperial Oatmeal Milk Stout on nitro, which was not too sweet, very creamy and not at all bitter. Lots to choose from and most folks will find something new worth trying. Ask for a sample if you're not sure. Joint: Doesn't look like much from the road (although does it seem weird that there are so many bars near the airport?) but nicer inside. We went on MLK Day for lunch and there were plenty of tables. Bar had a reasonable crowd but was not crowded. Fireplace was great on a chilly afternoon. Staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about the beers. Flowers on the table looked a little peaked from the heat of the fireplace, but hey, they made an effort. Bathrooms are clean and recently remodeled. Eats: Food selection was limited, which is fine by me. Better than average bar food. Everything was fresh and portions were generous. Soup was sweet potato, but not sweet. Fish and chips: tasted like tempura, light and buttery, fries served with skin on. Grilled chicken sandwich sounded light but quite heavy between mayo, cheese, onion rings and bread. Came with a side of "salad" which was huge and consisted solely of peppery greens (Mizuna maybe?). Worth noting: Live music in the evenings. Call ahead or check their blogspot (http://www.craftalehouse.blogspot.com/). As stated on their website, they do not accept reservations and will not seat parties of more than 6.No mention of the "not asking for any substitutions" on the menu as reported in some earlier reviews. The menu did ask that you please be considerate of other guests and leave the table when you are finished. It is a small place. I don't think it's an unreasonable request. The Craft Ale House is located just off Ridge Pike. The interior is dark and has a dining area & bar that are separated by half wall. Their beer selection is one of the best I've seen in a while. The bottle selection was huge and I really enjoyed the draft list. One thing I didn't know is that they have NO liquor. A Irish band was playing while we were there and they were very good. They have (2) menus a regular dinner menu and a late night menu. I chose their house burger and I did enjoy it. I thought it was a bit small but I would order it again. read more

I went here last night for dinner at 8:30. We were seated right away. There was live music which was great. It wasn't so loud that we couldn't hear each other speak so that was a huge plus. The waitress was very nice and helpful. I ordered a cranberry cider which was good. I was hesitant to order the airline style chicken because it's such a strange name and I didn't know what to expect but I went with it. It was really good. It was a lot of food. I'm disappointed. When they first opened the food was great. I read the declining reviews over time & thought maybe I just live near the snarkiest people. I was wrong. We went here on a Monday night, the place had a few tables but no wait. Here is a rundown: Leek soup - had long splinters of 'wood' in it, I pulled 7 of these out and showed the waiter because getting one of these stuck might be a problem. They claim it was thyme stalks, ok I'm over it. Taste was okay. Risotto - the worst risotto I think I've ever paid for. Gloopy, starchy, gummy topped with dried up chicken breast. Yeah, no. Caesar Salad - weird partially 'wet' croutons, flavorless dress and it looked like the outside of the romaine you usually toss. Funny thing about the croutons, we could tell if they were croutons or little bits of over-breaded chicken. Salad - this was a menu item, can't remember what it was called but it was basically mixed greens and radishes with some kind of white dressing. Literally worse than all iceberg salads diners give out, the worst. Pasta with Scallops (like an Alfredo?) - Scallops were large, actually cooked quite well. Sauce was sort of dry and pasty. Shepard's Pie - I have no words. We paid $100 for what is probably in my top 20 worst meals ever. Never again. read more

Still very solid. I've been back a few times more recently and their menu is still quite good. Mussels are still on the menu and I don't believe the sandwiches have changed too much... I haven't ordered any entrees in any visits. Soups and salads are inventive and have seasonal ingredients. I had the pulled pork sandwich recently and could not believe the generous portion. It helped that the mister and I agreed to go halvsies on my sandwich and his burger. Bonus: the flavor was great. There is no way I could have finished the pork sandwich on my own. Oh, and always get fries with your stuff. MMMMM...the rosemary and salt combination--it knocks 'em out of the park. On a more recent visit, I did shake my head in confusion when I see people sitting at the bar drinking a bottle of wine they BYO. Sans silverware--so they didn't order food. Really? Give those seats to paying drinking customers...have your wine at home or at least sit outside! Also, if you get take out beer from CAH, you get a discount if you buy a mix-and-match 6 pack or if you buy a 4 pack of bombers. Remember that... Ok. So this is my take on this place. Seated promptly. Arrived at 5:30 but quickly filled up by 6:00 The craft beer selection was very very good rating them a 4 out of a 5. This is also said for the bottle list. Got to try some incredible beers. The food was good but, BUT portions were small, for the price. I ordered the sirloin steak, with cauliflower mushrooms, sweet potato purée broccoli rabe and broccoli spears, in au jus sauce. 29.00. I'll bet with all due respect the portion was 6 ounces. Maybe 8, but I don't think so. Either way, for 29.00, THATS CRAZY!!!! By looking around, the burger was the way to go! Another reason for the 3 stars was the activity up and down the dining room. Over the many years that I previously patronized the Craft Ale House the owner, Gary, had been moderately rude and inhospitable. I only tolerated it due to its proximity to my home and because I had good friends that to overlooked Gary's attitude because of the beer and food selection. However, my last visit Gary exhibited the worst customer service I have ever experienced at a dining establishment. In late August I invited several friends to come to the bar with me because our kids were across the street bowling. Since we took three cars and others were joining us later I asked the hostess if we could sit in the area normally used by the musicians who play there periodically. She agreed and we sat down in the furniture that is kept there. This furniture consists of one long bench, one dilapidated very uncomfortable cushioned lounger, and a few wooden chairs. Nothing that I would say is either antique or delicate. In fact there were several stains on both the chairs and the small coffee table in that area. The coffee table stains were covered by magazines that apparently are never read, as evidenced by the fact they were years old. Nevertheless we asked if we could order beer and food to that area so as not to trouble a waitress nor take up seats at the bar. Our numbers were unknown and we were trying not to cause a problem for the wait staff. The hostess agreed. A few minutes later Gary walked over and informed us that there were only certain menu items that he would allow us to order from that area because he did not want to have to "clean up after us". We found that a bit odd but did not ask questions as this was his establishment and we wanted to follow the rules. Still, when we ordered our food Gary insisted on looking over each one of our shoulders to ensure that he had final say over each menu item we ordered. This even included the dressing on the salad that my friend ordered from the menu. As we each went up to the bar to place our orders Gary also insisted on walking over with us, as if we were 12 years old, and notifying the bartender of exactly how he should accept our order, including the type of dressing my friend was restricted to. If Gary were the least bit polite in this interaction we may have tolerated the circumstances. However Gary's attitude was one of distain and intolerance. Not only did he treat us like we were 12 years old he spoke to us like we were 12 as well, which had us all shaking our heads in disbelief. The situation was not only embarrassing for my friends but embarrassing for me as well as I was the person who recommended this establishment to our group. Without any apology or acknowledgment that he had been rude or insensitive Gary walked away as if he was happy with himself for monitoring our order. After a half of a beer and nibbling on the food that we had ordered (my friend only took two bites of his salad) we put our drinks down, paid our tabs, and left the establishment. If I could give Gary zero stars I would. I honestly have never been treated like this in my life. I have been to some pretty bad restaurants and have experienced some extremely poor service but this takes the cake. Gary will never get my business again and I am certain my friends will never patronize his establishment either. I am sure that others will empathize with our experience as I have heard many stories of Gary's rude behavior in the past. I understand Gary has a second establishment which is more of a restaurant. Rest assured I will not be patronizing that establishment either as long as Gary is the owner. The guy is in need of a serious attitude adjustment if he is to continue to be in food service or has any hope of ever being successful. Small town privately owned restaurants and bars must go the extra mile so that their good reputation grows and is not tarnished by an owner who has no idea how to treat customers. There are enough other bars and restaurants in this area that I do not have to tolerate this type of behavior or treatment. read more

The Craft Ale House is a great establishment for upscale pub fare with a European influence. With 350+ craft beers bottles and another 16 on draft there is no way to lose in terms of selection. The farmhouse mussels appetizer was quite enjoyable and the flavor combination was spot on with some leeks, bacon and blue cheese. For dinner we dined on a special the "porterhouse" pork chop. The cut was hearty and cooked properly. Plating was very nice and the chop was served with wilted arugula and a sweet potato purée. The second entree was braised short ribs with a Rosemary polenta and blackened green beans. The savory and spicy components complemented each other quite well. For desert it was a chocolate bread pudding which was tasty with some homemade whipped cream. I would consider this a great dinner for someone who takes good food seriously. This place gets one star for the good beer list and one star because I once had really good gazpacho here. However. I've been here a bunch of times, and every time it gets worse. The last time I was there, I ordered a tempura scallop sandwich that was on special. It came out, and I was like 'are these scallops?' Because they weren't. They were long and thin and CLEARLY deep fried imitation crab sticks. The waitress looked a little scared and said oh no, they do this thing to the scallops and that's what they look like. Ok. So I tried one. It was deep fried imitation crab. To make a long review shorter, the manager came out and told me that they were in fact scallops and that the chef blends them up and then re-forms them. Ok. Right. And I said: even if that's true, this is a scallop NUGGET sandwich. And I'm still not eating it. Summary: don't spit on my neck and tell me it's raining. I will not be back. Also: those were imitation crab sticks. PS: they were selling a lobster risotto ten days after Valentine's day while still displaying the Valentine's day menu, which featured lobster. Our meals were ice cold yet over cooked! Food was sent back waited forty minutes more for replacement food. Great beer selection, food was ok. I got the tomato bisque which was delicious and the mussels which were not so great. Mine were quite sandy and I could not finish them. They were presented in a white wine sauce with blue cheese and bacon. The blue cheese was a nice addition but the bacon got soggy in the broth. Two huge hunks of bread helped me overcome my hunger given the mussels I left behind. Hubs had a pork sandwich with roasted hot peppers. His sandwich was good, again not life changing. We want for Friday evening dinner. The service was awesome. We had the mussels which were delicious. My DH had the Pork belly mac and cheese. I didnt care for the pork belly but the mac and cheese was probablly the best I've ever had. I had the Burger(no bun) topped with a fried egg, carmelized onion and cajun seasoning which was very good and the fries were crispy. At first I thought the menu was pretty limited but I made it a point to leave a review about this place bc what we had selected was all amazing and I'm willing to make the 40 min drive to come back again and get the same thing! We had the soup de jour, which was Mexican...hubs said it was one of his top 10 favorite soups. I had the po'boy Sandwich which was good but the breading made it slightly dry. Completely infuriated. CAH happens to be one of my favorite 'local' watering holes, but after this past Saturday night, I don't think we'll ever be visiting there again. Our Saturday night started out great. We arrived at CAH around 7 and put our name in for a 45 min wait. We found one available seat on the wall adjacent to the dining area to stash our coats, purse, etc and grab a beer while we waited. And we did wait. It was about an hour until the hostess came over and seated us. We perused the menu (although being semi regulars, we knew what we wanted) and ordered more drinks. The food came out and we ate, we talked about our week, we drank, and we ate some more. Our waitress was wonderful - even convinced us to have the apple cobbler (which was delish) and coffee for dessert. By 9 o'clock, with coffee and cobbler still on the table, we were asked by someone in a CAH shirt (I can only assume it was the manager) to vacate the table because 'other people are still waiting for tables.' Never in my life have I been asked to vacate a table while I was still eating/drinking so other patrons could take my place. It's disrespectful, shows poor customer service, and is extremely humiliating. read more

We had my best friend and his girlfriend up from Philly and wanted to hit up a new place for some great food and drinks. So here we go... Walked in around 7 on a Friday night to find the place packed to the brim, which I typically take as a good sign. We also were expecting this based on reviews. We found a couple bar stools, ordered some great beers, and had fun catching up during the 45 minute wait. Which was exactly the wait the hostess had told us when we arrived. Upon being seated our waitress took a order for another round of drinks. Our waitress was never rude, though seemed to be rushed and put out whenever we ordered something. Like I said, the place was packed, so I can understand her being rushed. On to the food. As we ordered some apps and our dinners we were all very hungry. When the food came out it looked great and we dug in. Much quietness fell over the table as we ate. Much to my dismay the food was not going over well. Here is the rundown of our grub: Apps: Buttermilk Chicken Tenders-looked great, tasted like a spoonful of salt. They were home made chunks of white meat chicken battered a buttermilk coating. Great concept, too much salt. If we were not all so hungry we would not have eaten them. Parmesan Fries-fresh cut fries that tasted as though they were fried in a deep fryer of salt. After the salt tenders, these we did not eat. Dinners: Burgers: Hand crafted, pretty decent, but not fantastic burgers. They also came with parmesan fries. I was able to eat my burger, my buddy was unable to get it down. Pirogies: My wife ordered these as her dinner, though they are an app. She ate them and found them without taste and greasy. Scallops: My buddy's girlfriend, who is super nice, ordered the scallops dinner. They looked pretty good and had about eight decent sized scallops. She ate all but one scallop, so she may have found the best dinner of the night. Craft Ale does have extensive options for beers on tap, with a great selection of seasonal beers. They also have a large and meticulously organized selection of bottled beers. I would absolutely stop in Craft Ale all the time to pick up beer if I live nearby. read more

This place has a VERY long wait to be seated, they do not utilize the space and the food is not worth the wait. If u want beer this place is great. If you want great chicken fingers- come here. The food is generally just not good- I've been here too many times and the food has gotten worse each time. However the chicken fingers are amazing. The chicken fingers are worth a 20- 30 min wait. And you can get lost in the awesome BEER selection. You can NOT get alcohol and wine here. (I've never asked for wine so I may be wrong but I've never seen anyone drink any here). I've been to the place at least 20 times And it is definitely getting worse each time. But it could be great if they got a new chef and utilized the space. I really want to like this place but tonight might have been my last visit. I shared Ahi tuna w noodles and it was covered in pink peppercorns and it is not nice getting multiple of those in your mouth. I can't get the awful peppercorn taste out of my mouth. We had to send back Mac and cheese bc it was fishy and watery. Further, the waitress even agreed that they always take back the ahi Tuna dish w a lot of left over peppercorns. Maybe the manAgement should do something about that- it's gross to have a mouth full of pink peppercorns and it is pointless to have a garnish that is hardly edible. Finally, DON'T GeT a burger here- horrible. They can't cook a burger medium rare and it is chewy. Very disappointed w the food here. Beer pubs are not usually geared toward tv-hating, wine-swilling vegans, I realize. Someone on Facebook mentioned this place in a discussion of beer, I think, so I made a mental note to drive out to Limerick sometime when we had a hankering for good beer. It's about a half hour from Reading but not hard to find. The first thing we noticed was good music: Talking Heads, Love & Rockets, Erasure, Coldplay... NOT hippie music. And there is only one tv over the bar. I know they have live music on weekends, when I hear it gets extremely crowded. Why can't Reading have more places like this? The closest we have is Canal St and Union Jack's. On a Thursday night, the parking lot was full, so we parked at the hardware store behind it. A former deli in an unassuming building, Craft Ale House has a modern warm decor in black and wood, candles on the tables, and a fireplace area scattered with beer books. CAH gets the balance right: elegant without being snobby, comfortable without being divey. I would suggest turning down the lights a bit, but that is about my only complaint. The crowd was mostly GenX. Draft beers have an incredible changing selection and are priced from $4.50 to $5.50 except for a few. The owner clearly loves hops and Belgian styles, which are well represented. We worried that we would not be able to get much to eat and so sat in the bar. But the mushroom soup is a wonderful creamy puree with no cream or butter, the apple endive fennel salad was excellent, and their fries are dusted with rosemary and garlic. Vegetarians can enjoy a sweet potato ravioli and a few other things. Omnivores: the burgers must be good, because almost everyone ordered one. The service was professional, warm, and attentive, both from our server and the bartender (maybe the owner?), who advised us on beers when we shopped at the back for a mixed 6-pack to take home. If you buy 6, there is a 20% discount. There are many wine-sized bottles of beer too, so we will grab some of those next time. read more

I had a fantastic experience at the craft ale house today! We came in for lunch and the place was a bit quite, not too crowded and we were seated right away. I have to say that I love the setting, the decor and the calm atmosphere!! I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich without the bun (basically grilled chicken meal) and my boyfriend got the pastrami Ruben which looked and tasted amazing. The service we received from our server, Rachel was outstanding! She was very helpful with making beer recommendation, she checked on us and our food few times and what made the service more personalized is that she said our names at the end when she gave us the checks, I thought that was just an excellent service. So we were wrong about it going up to 5 stars...We've been back a few more times and the food just never gets better. It's so close to being really good, but it never makes it, falling flat. What's a pregnant woman doing at Craft Ale House? ... LOVING EVERY MINUTE! (and earning major spousal brownie points) The Hubs and I ventured out for our anniversary, CAH meeting both the criteria of being on my Yelp to-do list, and not requiring him to upgrade from his favored "jeans and button down" combo. They don't take reservations, and it was a busy Friday night, so he enjoyed a nice fall pint while we waited. CAH, take note: get a nice trivia game or something for the waiting area along with all those brewing books. We started with a cheesy spinach dip that came with toasted garlic rounds. A teensy bit salty, but otherwise amazingly tasty with lots of fresh spinach flavor. Slow roasted pork cheeks for me, and the pulled pork sammie for The Hubs followed. Both cooked perfectly and overflowing with delicious porcine goodness. His sandwich and fries went great with another pint, this time a Troeg's Troegenator. I may have had a (Dr. approved) sip or two. Finally, a piece of chocolate peanut butter pie while the Hubs mixed a mix six to take home from the extensive cooler case. We waited an hour+ to get our food. We asked for the check after waiting an hour and it came out before our food did. The waitress tried to ask the chef what the vegetarian option was but he was "too busy" to answer. This was a serendipitous stop for me. I work in the area occasionally, but I normally stay at a hotel in Pottstown. This evening I was staying in Limerick, and happened to drive by Craft Ale House. I sat at the bar, since it was a Saturday and fairly crowded. I vastly prefer a small out of the way table, but I'm glad I broke my usual rule. The meal was excellent. One of the best I've had at a pub like this. It reminds me of The Dirty Truth when they first opened. The beer selection is very good, but probably hampered by Pennsylvania's ridiculous laws. I've been in many "gastro-pubs" around the country that have far better, but this one is well selected. The giant brightly lit cooler is a distraction, and another reminder of this state's odd laws. The real winner here is the food. I have never had a better bangers and mash. This one is served with a white sauce (nice change), and a wonderful slaw which provides a perfect acid snap. The three sausages are perfectly different. I had a Celebration, though I was tempted by a nice looking herbal stout. Dessert was an excellent chocolate bread pudding (fresh whipped cream!), and a glass of Three Philosophers. Great place, and I will be back. read more

My birthday was on Saturday, and as is typical for my January 8th birthday, winter weather interfered with my original plans for the day. Needing to stay local, my boyfriend and I searched Yelp for a lunch spot and agreed that we wanted to try Craft Ale House. While I don't agree with the reviewer who said it looks like an 1800s carriage house - we found the setting much more modern - Craft Ale House was a lovely spot for a snowy afternoon. The gas fireplace was a particularly nice touch. One of my favorite details was the books they had on the coffee table by the fireplace; we really enjoyed reading from Pennsylvania Breweries while we waited for our food. The menu here is somewhat limited, but it seems like what they do, they do well. According to our server, they make everything themselves with the exception of the rolls and the (yummy, spicy) mustard. My burger was perfectly cooked, juicy, and flavorful - the best burger I've had in quite some time. My boyfriend had the short rib sandwich, which was also tasty. The fries were terrific with vinegar and a bit more salt. We were both stuffed and unable to finish all of our fries. The beer list was terrific. The beer menu provides descriptions for each and that they're willing to give samples; I like being adventurous with beers and trying new ones, but it's a bummer when you get stuck with a pint you hate. Our server was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I really appreciated that she went back to the kitchen to find out the brand of the mustard for me; she brought the name back written down on a slip of paper. Really, our experience here was quite positive, and I hope we'll go back sometime, even if it is a little out of the way. We have frequented CAH since they opened a little over a year ago. CAH is a refreshing change to the multitude of chain restaurants that have recently infiltrated our area. If you are looking to enjoy unique food and a superb beer list than CAH is the place to go. There is always different beers on tap, they even change as you're there dining and kegs get kicked. The menu has the standard staples of burgers and muscles but they also add seasonal favorites as well. I have not had a meal there that didn't satisfy. The only downfall to CAH is seating. If you go Thursday -Saturday expect to wait. But be sure to have a drink at the bar while you do so as dinner is well worth it! read more

This is definitely what Limerick needs, a nice, casual pub. It's not overbearing, but is a bit on the trendier side. It helps that they have an extensive list of beers to choose from, making it a place where everyone can be happy. Or make it so that people have a hard time deciding. The food is decent. I wouldn't say that it's over the top, nor would I label it as "SPF" aka, standard pub fare, which is just my way of saying blase pub food that I could get at any chain restaurant. They seem like they actually put effort into making it a notch above SPF. It's always hopping, so I would say either go earlier to get a seat and then keep your waitress happy with a large tip so she doesn't get impatient and try to kick you out, or go later so that you don't feel as if you're rushed. I've been twice with my wife (who is not a beer drinker), and we both loved it both times. The burgers are to die for, with quality ingredients that are well-cooked. The wait staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, explaining that every single ingredient in the kitchen is fresh. The first time we went, we had burgers and the cheese/charcuterie plate. The second time, we had the spinach dip and then split one of their specialty pizzas. Both times we went away incredibly pleased and raving to go back again. We plan on going for our third round next weekend. If you like modern american fare, eat here. Just do it. read more

Update to this old review, from recent visit 3/30/18 Tap list still similar. Found a nice deal for $5.50/pint of a Sierra Nevada IPA. Ordered food to go because I was starving. Shrimp po'boy was fishy and the tiniest shrimp ever, the fries were totally oily and way undercooked and the Caesar salad was very tasty, but small in size. $23 basically wasted on food. Easy to find this place if on Ridge Pike, just down the street from Airport Road. Ample parking in front and behind the restaurant itself. I was a huge fan when I first moved to the area, but i find myself visiting less and less these days. The food menu just doesn't change that much and while I really enjoy the mussels, pork sandwich, etc... I feel like I need to go elsewhere for variety. Also, the fries have changed a bit and not for the better (at least on my last visit). 16 draft lines at CAH. The list is well balanced and they allow you to sample something before trying (a must in the craft beer business), but I find a lot of their pours are 10oz. and it can get expensive when you order up 2-3 and a meal. Almost $40 to sit at the bar for an hour is not quite how I like to spend my hard earned $. You can always find a local offering very reasonably priced, but I don't always want to drink something I can easily obtain from the brewery or brewpub itself at a craft beer bar. They are also very strict when it comes to seating. You can not grab a table if your entire party is not directly in front of them. You could have 3 people ready to order drinks and grub with your 4th a mile down the street and they will not seat you until that 4th person shows up and if it is dinner time, guess what? You will lose your table and have to wait a bit or go elsewhere. I suggest you lie and tell them you are just a party of 3 and get that table. Talk to one of the bartenders when inquiring about a beer (Brian is the man if he is still there), as I find the owners really don't know much about the beer scene, besides what is in high demand so they can be sure to mark things up accordingly. I realize this review is pretty harsh, but I have been to many of the craft beer bars in the region and I need to call it as I see fit. Their food is quite good and the selection is solid. 3 stars is all I can give this place based on the fact that I don't have the desire to go here much these days. read more
