Old school, small town America with absolutely Incredible roast beef sandwiches! Well worth the trip!

I love the vibe here, strictly old school. Blue collar guys in here for lunch and a few pops, I knew it felt right. The beef sandwich was very good. Generous portions of beef on a good Kaiser roll. The Au Jus left me hanging. It added little flavor to the sandwich when dipped. My personal taste on the chili cheese fries was the chili was too sweet and not my style. Service was really great and the draft beer and birch beer was ice cold. read more

The meals we saw coming out of the kitchen were huge. We got the day's special, prime rib sandwich. It came with wonderfully coated french fries. I was in the Exton area on business and remembered having a hand carved Roast Beef Sandwich at the Coventry Pub many many years ago. I check to see if it was still in business and headed the 8 miles up Route 100. The place had not changed a bit in the 40 years it had been. When I went in I did not see the Roast Beef behind the bar so I was getting cold feet. The bar tender gave me a menu and I chose the hand carved Open Face Roast Beed Sandwich with Mashed Potatoes. The bar tender pulled a piece of Roast Beef out of the steam table and began cutting in earnest. She took the hand carved slices into the back where I suppose they added the Mashed Potatoes, Bread and Gravy. I ordered a Mug of Birch Beer (from the keg). Oh my God. The Sandwich was the best I had ever eaten and it was the biggest portion. I wish I had taken pictures but the place is dingy and dark and I just did not think of it. The Mashed Potatoes were breathtakingly good as well. The Birch Beer came in a very frosted mug, This place needs some love. Ye Olde Coventry Pub really is a locals pub. The atmosphere is that of a local watering hole: a long bar; Formica-topped tables and lots of wood on the walls. When my wife and I were there the other patrons seemed to know, if not each other, at least the service staff. YOCP is known for it's "hand carved" roast beef sandwiches and plates. There is a person behind the bar who carves a roast of some sort to order. We did not order it but several patrons did and they seemed to enjoy it. My wife ordered a grilled Reuben. She had the option of sauerkraut or slaw on the sandwich and chose the sauerkraut. It looked good on the plate and she said it was very flavorful. I ordered a shrimp po'boy which I felt was uninspired. Some rough chopped lettuce were placed in hoagie roll, topped with some chopped tomato and six, deep fried squares of what I assume was shrimp. There were a drab of sauce on each square - not what I'm used to in other places. The french fries, which I believe to be double-fried, were excellent! Both our plates were covered with the and we ate the all! If you've read this far and IF you've read any of my other reviews, you know I'm not one to gush. I think that when you read a gushing review (although I've written a few) it's usually a friend who's trying to help, or someone who lives on mac 'n cheese at home. There's nothing special about cooking a roast and slicing it down for sandwiches but many diners are impressed by watching someone carve a roast. That being said, there's nothing wrong with YOCP, it's just average and a nice, unpretentious place for lunch or dinner. I doubt I'd take friends from out of town there but I'd certainly go back. Used to go over there, the waitress who has been there forever is ignorant, rude and actually had the nerve to ask for a tip after moving my belongings to another seat at the bar while I was in the bathroom. She moved me to make room for other people that wanted to sit together even though I was waiting on a friend. She didn't get a tip. The food can't even count on 1 hand how often it was undercooked and sent back. It's also 1 of those places that doesn't care about over serving already visibly drunk people and letting them drive or try to cross RT 100 with heavy traffic. They are over priced, rude and have no regard for customers. read more

Truly one of the most over priced and disappointing meals ever . We Ordered two roast beef sandwiches. What was served, they should truly be ashamed of really. I know Gordon Ramsey would still be throwing a tantrum. Thick , tough, casket gray slices of something dead on a roll. Not one spec of pink ! There was no rhyme or reasons to why what was on the roll was all different thicknesses and size of pieces . Most roast beef is served medium rare and sliced beautifully on a slicer this was just horrible and disgustingly dreadful and unappealing ! Over $27.00 plus tax for two sandwiches each smaller than Wawa's shorty ! Went home and ordered a full size sandwich from Wawa with every thing on it for $6.00! Nothing like being robbed! We went for the steak sandwiches. Both of us were in the mood for the famous roast beef sandwiches that were served years ago. The beef was kept warm under the lamps and hand carved in front of everyone. They were extremely delicious Unfortunately quite a bit has changed since then. The beef was well done and a bit on the tough and rubbery side. And they lacked any type of flavoring ... Just bland. So sad that another good traditional food is now among the missing. We having going here for years. This time was probably the worst experience we have ever had. As usual the daytime lunch server was sweet and attentive. The snapper soup still the best in the area. The bomb was dropped on the usually incredible roast beef sandwiches. Sliced too thick, perhaps against the grain. Tough and flavorless. Hoping it was an off day but based on some other recent reviews I am concerned Owners please take note. Something is wrong. One complaint may be a fluke but the dozen or so recent ones on Yelp looks like a sad trend. read more

Decided to try Coventry Pub. I haven't been there in over a decade. I have to say the food was very good. My only problem was the service. The woman that served us was very nice. Unfortunately , service took very long. Im guessing they are short handed like every where else. Unfortunately we just couldn't get our drinks in a timely manner, nor our lunch. People at the bar were being served quicker and more often than us. I will try them again, because the food was very good. Just hopefully they have more help next time. read more

The Coventry Pub is a classic example of the tap rooms that populate southeastern PA. It's been there forever - as in as long as I can remember. I started going there 15-20 years ago for one thing: The roast beef sandwich. Hot, fresh, hand carved and piled high on a Kaiser roll with au-jus and horseradish. So much beef you could barely get your mouth around it. Fast forward, circa 2010. Went last Saturday night with a group of friends. Every bit the same old tappy - but better beer on tap (Spatan pils was a selection, served in a Spatan glass.). Notty pine paneling and furniture. The Phils game playing on tv over the bar. And there it was - a big hunk of steaming roast beef being hand-carved by the owner into sandwich after sandwich. If you want cheese, he dips it in the au-jus before layering it onto the beef. Every bit as tasty as I remember perhaps a tad less roast beef piled on. But frankly it was plenty for me. A true mouth watering delight for $7. Oh yea - and they make their own snapper soup . It was easily the best I've had in the area, hands down. No kidding - the real deal with huge chunks of snapper. One of the party had the corn chowder - with lots of high praise. All reasonably priced, lots of specials on beers. We didn't try any of the other food, but then again why bother? You just don't find these places outside of PA - at least in my experience. My wife and I decided to celebrate my 68th birthday by having drinks and dinner at the Coventry Pub. It was a Sunday nite, 6 oclock and the place got full right after we got there. There was only 1 server on so service was poor. She was stressed trying to keep up. I ordered meat loaf and my wife ordered a reuben. Came out in ok time but her fries and sandwich was just warm. My meatloaf was burnt crispy on both sides and covered in a dark brown gravy. Looked like the cook was trying to hide it with the gravy. I sent it back for a replacement that came out fine. My wifes reuben had cole slaw on it instead of sauerkraut. The waitress explained that cole slaw is used in this area instead of sauerkraut. First I ever heard that. Don't think we will be going back again. read more

Turn around now! Not worth your time or money. This was probably the worst visit to a restaurant I've had in a long time. I'll try to make this quick. I went with a group of friends for dinner. The server was clearly overwhelmed by a 7 top. It was a slow night, they could have taken their time. The server was unprofessional, used tacky jokes towards almost each person ordering, and were not cautious towards a Gluten allergy in the group. They needed some major training in serving/food handeling & above all professionalism. I've been a server for 9 years, I can say this. Everything took FOREVER to come out. The orders were written down but still came out incorrectly. The gluten allergy persons salad came out with croutons on it. 3 people waited 20 mins after everyone else got their food, for the roast beef. Mediocre food. Decor needs updated. This is a dive bar restaurant; that is nothing sone I hold against it. I like a good dive! But this place is a little creepy (dark, dark, dark) and the food is just not good. Only been here twice and it's not for me but the parking lot is often full and it has been there forever. It is certainly possible this is just not my kind of dive. read more

Great food and atmosphere, poor service. I wish I could give 5 stars but the day time wait staff is horrible, specifically the bartender. I'm watching Bar Rescue right now and I think the host would want this person fired. We waited 15 minutes to even be acknowledged and it wasn't until I said Hello, how are you in an overly loud voice, we got service. This place is pretty good. The roast beef sandwiches are really good and come out with a a jar of hot peppers and horseradish for on top of the sandwich. The ambiance is old and could be updated but it reminded me of my grandma's basement bar back in the day so it brought back great memories! This bar is such a hometown hidden gem. They have not only survived COVID, but have come out on top. We came in late on a Saturday night, and the bar tender made sure we still had a excellent dinner, even thought the kitchen was closing. What a great family friendly place!!!! read more

You can't find these guys online, but they're out there and have been a part of the Pottstown Community for AWHILE. They have pretty awesome sandwiches. The pork station behind the bar? Money. Just absolutely a MUST. But the beer is pretty pricy. Awesome selection though. Good stuff for take out as well. For the size of the place, they do pretty okay. AND I always admire when they serve the appropriate pint glasses. If you read my bar assessments, you'll see I'm a stickler for glassware. Good spot, not great. More of a local vibe. read more

I've been going to this pub occasionally for over 20 years. Nice cozy place and good food. Unfortunately, my last experience was not good. The chili was just okay and I've never had a bad perogie, but they were a soggy mess and tasted weird, maybe the oil they used? The waitress was good, but we were sitting near a couple that seemed to be regulars. He had a loud voice and was saying the "F" word and what topped it off he was using the "N" word in conversation with the waitress. Paid and left ASAP! Sorry Coventry Pub. Let's start with the good. Drinks were very good. I had a Manhattan and hubbie had an old fashioned. We're pretty picky about drinks so we're pleasantly surprised. At $5.50 and $6.50 each it was a steal. The onion rings were also good but we did ask the server before we ordered them if you got a lot for the $7.50 price. She said yes but we thought that a basket of rings for $7.50 when you only got 7 of them was pricey. The not so good. We wanted to try the famous "roast beef". It came out cold after we waited 20 minutes for our food. We sent it back to he warned up. We would give the roast beef a 5 out of 10. Should be sliced thinner and it was fatty and tough. Local country pub (public house). Folks were friendly when we got them to talk.. I found that 6-7 of the 14 people at the bar were using their smart phones. That translates to not much conversation with others. I had a ruben good balance of meat to kraut. The kraut should have been drained for it soaked the lower piece of bread in my sandwich. The fires were ho hum and did not take salt well. (meaning dry but hot). My wife had a fish and chip sandwich without the bun. The fish was nice, not greasy. The fries had old bay on them and were nice but she said under cooked a bit. She had the cole slaw with the sandwich and it was good. Price to value was a bit high. It has been awhile since we last went there. It will be awhile before we go back. read more
