The atmosphere is fantastic -- it truly feels like you're up north in the Northwoods. It has that cozy, laid-back ski vibe that makes you want to hang out after your runs. The food is reasonably priced and always hits the spot. Drinks at the bar are a little on the expensive side, but that's pretty typical for ski hills. I've never had an issue with any staff members -- everyone has always been friendly and helpful. Service upstairs in The Hideout can be a bit slow at times, especially during busy hours, but it's nothing that ruins the experience. Overall, it's a great place to ski, relax, and spend the day. Highly recommend -- especially if you're looking for that true Northwoods feel.

A number of cabins are newer and while on my recent visit they had removed an older cabin and had just poured a big new foundation for its replacement. The bar is the best and Beverly is still there expertly serving cocktails and beer plus the only bar up here I've found still serving ice cream drinks especially the Brandy Alexander. The cabin I stayed in this time was an older one but still comfortable and a great northwoods feel with a beautiful view of the lake.

Brothers Joe and Peter, the new owners have been making a lot of improvements to the resort and it is very nice. There is a good sized bar that is open to the lake on three sides so there is not a bad seat in the house. The food ranges from snacks and appetizers to wraps, burgers and of course, a fish fry and all were delicious. The drinks are good and reasonably priced and the atmosphere can't be beat. I sat in that bar for a long time and between the locals and guests and people passing through, everyone was friendly and fun. Each night I sat at a different campfire with the other guests and we all had a great time. They have boat rentals, a launch for guests and plenty of slips. Plus, they have the only beach on Pickerel Lake. It is a great place to relax and unwind. I can't wait to go back in the fall.

The photos on the website are deceiving when it comes to the toiletries, the "standard " toiletries are a body/hair soap dispenser in the shower, no conditioner and a foam hand soup dispenser next to the sink. Casino is very small and not well maintained. Many of the machines were out of service. I was very disappointed in my stay, especially for the price I paid for the room.

He grew up in the area and knew everything about the lakes and the people living on the lake and the history of the entire area and he was very funny and entertaining. A man who loves his job!! The chain of lakes was absolutely beautiful. We saw eagles nesting, beaver lodges and loons on the water. The cruise was well worth the money charged. Will definitely visit again. Note: Kudos to owner, Chad Bierbrauer. We had booked this cruise for August 2023 but had a death in the family and had to cancel. Chad issued us a voucher to use anytime ( no expiration) and are we ever glad we chose to use it this year (2024). I highly recommend this business and if you get Duke as your driver, you will not be disappointed. Another note: Chad also offers snowmobile tours in the wintertime. The rental office is very nice and is very easy to find on the main highway going through town.

We joined another couple that day (cutting the price in half) for a glorious private speed boat tour of Bear and Devil's Island. We didn't have to navigate the challenging waves with kayaks, were able to cover much ground in significantly less time and were still able to get an intimate tour of the best sea caves as Pete deftly navigated the vessel in and out of the caves. We wound up having a much better tour and saved enough money to pay for the previous nights dinner in the process. HIGHLY RECOMMENED!!!

The good - Our guide was excellent - he showed great care in talking about safety while on land, he was patient with the people on the tour who were new to kayaking, and he made sure to lead us to all the sea caves and point out great pictures spots without making the tour feel rushed. The experience on the water was good, and the beauty of the sea caves is just breathtaking. The bad - The communication prior to the start of the tour. We arrived at Meyers Beach around 15 minutes before our 3 PM tour (per the instructions in the confirmation email), and we did not see anyone there associated with Rustic Makwa. Time passes until 2:55, and we still do not see anyone. I check my email: nothing. I eventually call the phone number on the email, and I am assured the guide is "on his way, will be there shortly after 3". We waited until about 3:10, and nobody had arrived. I call the number again and am told that the guide will be there by 3:20. We wait until 3:30, and I text the number: I am told the guide is close by. Finally, around 3:40, just as we are about to leave, our guide finally arrived. Apparently, the guide was waiting for the winds to die down a bit before starting the tour - hence the delay. While I appreciated the tour's commitment to safety, the lack of communication was disheartening. There were only three groups on our tour. The time it would have taken to update us on the tour's current conditions/status (via email/text/phone call) would not have taken long. I understand the weather is unpredictable, and it isn't easy to make the call sometimes on whether or not tours can safely be conducted. However, providing information and updates (without having me chase the information down) would have allowed us to better use our limited time in Bayfield by not having us wait in the parking lot area for almost an hour.
