Cravin's in Bend is the perfect candy store. I wandered in and was draw to the two dozen bulk candy tubes, I looked down to find one of my favorite "sweets store staples": ziplock bags of bulk candy; in went the sour mini cola bottles. Then I wandered past epic niche character candies like Krabby Patties, Red Fox Animal Poo Cotton Candy, and gummy sushi setups. The back of the store amplified the original Willie Wonka movie on a big video board. The shop is stocked and tight, good that means more candy. There is ice cream and a chocolate/confections case. The girl working on the busty rainy Saturday was communicative and kind despite doing 4 things at once. This is a classic candy shop. Do you want to eat crickets? You can! But I'll settle for my colas. A Jones soda bottle cap was on the bench outside where I sat to write this review, the inside read, "you are worthy of good things." Nice place. Downright dangerous! We bought way more than we anticipated! It was the perfect place to find special treats and gifts at any price range that anyone would love. We bought truffles, fudge and oh my goodness the various flavors of licorice. The gentleman who took care of us was thoughtful and attentive. He greeted us as soon as we came in. I'm afraid I'm going to have to duck in every time I'm in downtown Bend and at least grab some more licorice. We were walking by and noticed the hot chocolate sign in the window. We decided it sounded good. The place is filled with all sorts of candy & gelato as well. Asked an employee if they carried Wacky Wafers and he searched the area but unfortunately no luck. We ordered our hot chocolate but the gelato looked good too. We decided on both. The 2 employees working were amazing. We got our gelato but since there wasn't a sit down area to eat it, we decided to take it back to the hotel. We asked for lids. Unfortunately, the employees were searching for ones. They did locate them. Again, outstanding service by them. The gelato was delicious and the hot chocolate was what we were craving. The Powell's name is synonymous with quality, quantity and books... in Portland. Powell's Sweet Shoppe pays tribute to the name by stocking the finest selection of candy and sweets I've ever seen. Ever. My son had a glow the entire afternoon, just remembering our first visit. "Mom, this place is like heaven to me." We returned the next day and the day after that... To get a true sense of the magic of this place, I'm going to let the founder describe his vision, "What we're selling, really, is memories." Think of the Technicolor dreaminess of Willy Wonka and you'll start to get the picture. There is no chocolate waterfall, but the rest of the fantasy is there. They play the movie (Gene Wilder version) in the back of the store in the middle of a display of movie theatre-sized treats. They have photos and autographs of the cast, golden tickets, a tree full of oversized lollipops and an entire section of Wonka brand candy, including Everlasting Gobstoppers. There are entire sections dedicated to M&Ms, Pez, and a wall of 200+ bulk items that you mix-n-match and pay by the pound. This is where you set you set your child loose (with boundaries, of course!) and watch their eyes bug out of their head. Powell's true strength is the nostalgia items. Everything from candy from your youth that is difficult to find at your corner store to items that perhaps should fade into obscurity, like candy cigarettes. Some of the items from the 60s and 70s are downright comical. This isn't just a sugar fantasy for the kiddos. They also offer 22 varieties of gelato, dozens of truffles, a wall of classic sodas in glass bottles and boutique and higher end chocolates from Oregon's Dagoba brand to one of the best selection of Ritter chocolate bars I've seen outside of Germany. Keep in mind, that you will pay dearly for these hard to find items, so check prices as you shop otherwise you will get a nasty case of sticker shock at the register. If you are looking for cheap candy, stick to generic brands at your local convenience store. This is a franchise with most of their locations in California, so now my kids will keep their eagle eyes open for Powell's on road trips. There was something that triggered a memory from my childhood around every corner. A total nostalgia trip for adults. Everything from vintage lunchboxes to potato guns to Pop Rocks. You can even hold children's birthday parties here where they go on a scavenger hunt for treats. Not as easy as it seems since the cashier said they stock close to 9,000 items in the store. On the back wall, they even have helpful guides like lists of vegan, gluten-free and kosher candy. Even suggestions if you have braces. For years we've been going to Goody's in Bend, but I can't imagine my kids will return after visiting Powell's. We've turned a page. read more

I was instantly thrown back to my youth and with the fabulous assortment of sweet delights and the amazing variety of colors and candies. I just stood there in awe. Reminded me of my favorite shops in Monterey and Carmel all wrapped in one package. So many choices. From milk chocolate to dark chocolate. Chocolate cover everything. Hard candies. Soft candies. Rude customer service. We got there 10 minutes before closing to get some gelato and the staff told us that they were closing in 7 minutes two times before we even got to order. When I was a little girl and from time to time accumulated the vast disposable income of twenty five cents, my parents would let my younger brother and me walk a couple of blocks away (in our Portland city neighborhood) to a little market that had an amazing display of candy. This market smelled like candy when we walked in and there seemed to be an unending number of candy choices for me as I disposed of the quarter. In those days, you could walk out with at least five choices, more if you knew the "puts and takes" of penny candies and candy bars, in a crunchy little paper bag for the quarter spent. The hard thing was narrowing down the options to stay in budget. (I didn't know I was learning something about consumer choice and money management in this exercise, but I was. ;-) ) The first time I walked into Powell's the memory of being that little girl in that other store, clutching my quarter and holding my brother's hand was so overwhelming it was almost visceral. You know the phrase "sell the sizzle not the steak"? Well, what Powell's is really selling at each of their (roughly 18 franchised) stores is the "sizzle" of memories - and it works. First, Powell's smells like a candy store from my childhood. I'm not kidding about that and I'm not sure how they do it, but it is in part the aroma that fuels the memories. All of the shapes and colors of packages and bulk candies in happy candy cacophony add to the aura. The first time a friend and I visited Powell's, we wandered in the (too tight) little aisleways..."Oh remember these turkish taffies? Remember these chick-a-sticks? Remember this kind of gum? Remember..." Powell's also has good looking gelato for sale, but in my couple of visits into the store I've never made it past the candy to try the gelato. I seem to go in on a candy buying "search" for something to send a friend. But I'm not really buying the candy to send them, I'm buying the memory the candy will bring back when they see the package, smell the aroma and eat the contents. Even though some of the candy I would have chosen to eat as a kid almost makes my teeth chatter now to think of the over-sweetness of it, some happy new memory occurs to me too. Times change. I imagine few parents today would let a couple of sub seven year olds walk to the city market a couple of blocks away by themselves. A quarter wouldn't buy one candy bar, let alone a crunchy paper bag filled with sweet options.My candy loving brother grew up to be a dentist. But he is gone now - a car accident when he was only 44. As I write this review, I remember when he was four years old and always wanted to buy a box of a specific brand of cherry cough drops. Which I, in year older sister mode, would not let him do since they were "medicine". But I wonder if Powell's carries that old brand of cherry candy passing for cough drops? If they do, on my next trip in I'm going to buy a box and remember my brother. I'm very glad times change and progress is made. As example, back in the days when that quarter would buy me a bag of candy at that little market, it would have been unthinkable for a woman to be a Justice of the Supreme Court. Nostalgia, someone once said, is the longing for things that never really were. So for me it's not so much that Powell's fuels nostalgia, something I'm not inclined towards, but that it blooms good memories and smiles. If you visit Powells, you'll probably find memories of your own that will make you smile too. Not to mention a LOT of candy to buy of all kinds to help create new memories. Now if they'd just make the aisles wider, it would be five star worthy. :-) read more

Talk about a big kid in a big candy shop! This place has everything you need to get your sugar fix. Any candy that you want they will most likely have: Jelly Belly, M&M dispensers, PEZ (incl. big PEZ dispensers - which I though were only available in Austria!), chocolate truffles, gelato, - I can't even list all the candy they have. The pictures don't even do it justice. I did get some really good gelato with a nice little chocolate/cookie straw thingy. We stopped into this place after dinner because we wanted some ice cream/gelato. It's a fun little place with lots of crazy novelties and of course Gelato. While it's not the "Best" gelato I have ever had, it was very good. I tried probably five different flavors before deciding to get the hazelnut (not what they call it) and peanut butter. The hazelnut was creamy and full of flavor, I enjoyed the fact that it had Nutella in it. The peanut butter was equally creamy and full of goodness. While there is a little bit of chocolate in it, they didn't go overboard and ruin it with too much. I hate when peanut butter ice cream is ruined by chocolate. If you are in the downtown area and want a desert or a fun shop with lots of sweets and novelties, this is it! read more

Selection is quite impressive. Old classics to all kinds of specialties including foreign and local. I saw some Seattle chocolates there that I had only seen in Seattle before. There is a fresh cotton candy machine. The only disappointing thing was the gelato. I tried multiple flavors but they all seemed a little too sweet. Our toddler spilled about 20 cents worth of M&Ms while helping my wife get a present for his Grandma. As soon as the spill happened my wife started to clean it up and offered to pay for it. The rude older woman instead lectured my wife about spilling EXPENSIVE candy! (which we offered to pay for already!!!!) I emailed the owner TWICE about the issue and my emails were ignored. Powell's is so fun! There's so much to look at! It's packed full of classic candy and toys, and the gelato is great! The first time my husband and I stopped in here, he ended up buying a bunch of novelty sodas and energy drinks for his co-workers, and I found some great candy items I hadn't seen in years. This place is the perfect combination of sweets and nostalgia. They have everything from lollipops to gelato to artisan organic chocolate to a rainbow spectrum of M&M's. It just so happens that in my current state sour candy seems to help settle my stomach. We were in this shop getting some strawberry puffs when i noticed they had sour strawberry's as well. I filled a bag and spent the next few days in sour heaven. Now that we are home, I can't find them anywhere!! It's like this shop is the long vendor which makes me want to drive back just to fill another bag. I loved walking in here. It took me back to being 5 years old. I found every candy that I used to buy and eat, from Now and Later's to Charleston Chews to Pez. I mean, it's Powell's, what's not to like? Always fun to wander through a candy shop - won't ever leave empty handed, and I don't even have *that* big a sweet tooth. We ended up leaving with two scoops of gelato each. I was a bit off-put that the gelato was almost a bit runny in the freezer, but I just had such a craving, that I had to go for it.
