There are: basketry, candles, ceramics, gourd art, hand-spun yarns, jewelry, knitting, lampwork beads, ornaments, painting, pencil drawings, photography, pottery, sculptures, shell art, stained glass, tapestry bags, weaving, wood arts, and even handmade soap! Some of my favorites were: Jeanne Hammett's beautiful silkscreen prints, Lisa Tettimer's mixed metal jewelry, and Marta Kelsey's gourds. This year, the show was set up at Calvert High School, where all the vendors had their own 'booth' area set-up, and there was plenty of room to roam around, peruse to your heart's content, and speak with the various artists. I didn't want to go somewhere I'd be looked at suspect or like a unicorn, so I searched for a Black-owned yarn shop. To my surprise, Gathering Yarns was just 25 minutes from DC and worth the drive. The yarn shop is a standard storefront in a strip mall, so it was both easy and difficult to find at the same time. You can't miss the mall itself, but you'll have to scan to notice the store. The interior is cute with a modest selection of yarn, needles, and other accessories. The skein I bought was reasonably priced, but since I'm a new knitter, relative value is still unclear. I took the beginner knitting class and the instructors were great. They give you one-on-one attention and focus on your learning style and your strengths. I learned the basics and will definitely be going back for more lessons. All-in-all I really dig this place and will definitely be back.

Considering that there are only two other yarn stores in the greater Richmond area, it's nice to know that there's something for everyone if you're in Richmond proper. You may also find a range of customer service. The first time I went in, I felt very welcomed by the staff members and they answered all of my questions. I was happy to make my purchase. This is what prompted me to return. The second time I went in, the staff member at the register was chatting with an exiting customer about the election. I don't mind a political disagreement or difference but I do mind vindictive racially charged whispers. If your hand is over your mouth as you gleefully lean into your inner mean girl, a part of you knows that what you said isn't entirely classy. Your candidate winning does not excuse bad manners or a lack of decorum. However, it's low form to wish the losing candidate ill, and to hope that they go back to the hole they crawled out of. Wow. It just goes to show that age is not associated with class. Folks are entitled to their opinions, but if you're a staff member hoping to make a sale, it's probably best to keep that under wraps or at least away from your workplace. Not classy, not demure, not mindful at all, and definitely not the kind of behavior that would make America great ... at any point. Note: I do not believe that this staff member reflects the entirety of the others. I do think that, had it not been the day after the election, this person may have been less likely to be less mindful of others in the store. That said, big moments in history do reveal our true character, and I hope this staff member takes the time to be more empathetic and aware of their surroundings the next time they are at their workplace.

I visited all three shops to find just the right fit. I found it. This shop is BIG. You don't feel crowded and claustrophobic when you are searching for fabrics. There a large windows so the lighting is perfect for seeing true colors. I have always been greeted when I walk through the door. There are a lot of employees but I didn't feel pressured or rushed to make a selection. On the contrary, as I was auditioning a couple of options I had multiple employees walk over and give my choices a "look" and they offered their opinions, which I found helpful. Amy is a COMPLETE GEM. Her classes are so worthd taking. The other huge plus is that she has an educational YouTube page where she posts many videos to continue your education from the shop to your home. How many times have I had a great experience in a class somewhere else, only to get home and forget a key step when I try to make the project? That isn't an issue with Amy's classes. Not a lot of color choices unless you want only solid colors, I like variegated colors. I wanted to ask the staff when I was in the last several times some questions but unfortunately they are not open to being asked anything. After this last try I won't be going back again. No one even will say Hello when you walk in the door and the looks they gave me when I was looking could have fried eggs in a cast iron pan. I found the prices about the same as most stores, maybe just slightly higher but their attitude of just not wanting customers has made me quite sure I'll stick to the store in Winter Haven FL where I walk in and they are happy to see me and always have a smile as well as a fantastic selection!
