Adorable shop full of vendors galore from children's clothing to pottery to jewelry and everything in between. I arrived on a Sunday afternoon and there was live music!!! I was so impressed by that! Oh and there is a beer garden on the other side of the wall - you can actually walk into it from SOF! I absolutely love the layout of this place though it is not ADA compliant to say the least - the top floor is only accessible from tight little stair cases with steep stairs but once you get up there, there are so many things to look at from crystals to stickers and garden decorations aplenty! I am just super impressed that they're able to figure out how to charge us for everything - they have a pretty sophisticated system because you bring everything up to the front cashier and they figure it all out for you - technology is great!!! I loved all of the stocking stuffers I was able to pick up - so many small items that are reasonable priced and perfect to fit in a stocking, Easter basket, Hanukkah gift...you name it!!! read more

I love visiting small towns. My sister-in-law took all the girls on a mini-shopping excursion and the main destination was SOF Market. Similar to the Keepin' It Local shop that I recently reviewed, the SOF Market is located in I guess what you would consider the "downtown" of Leonardtown. This is a big building FULL of handmade goods and vendors in the local community. It's almost like a little maze. There are different walk-in doorless rooms with 2 floors with more things! This is like a real life Etsy pop-up. I saw all sorts of things from commercially made women's clothing, accessories, artwork and a whole lot of handmade items. I saw some beautiful shell art like oyster shells made into a tree shape, shells with painted interiors, stickers, soaps and SO MUCH! I also saw some vintage items also. Great place to get unique gift items. There is also an ice cream shop located in the back, as well as a new food vendor coming soon. That would be a great addition. That would give people somewhere to snack on something to take a break from all the browsing. My sister-in-law said that another food vendor had been located there, but they moved out and moved down the street. I picked up some candle wax from a vendor that was moving out. She was having a blowout sale to transition to online selling only. The scent is amazing and I can smell it as I am typing this. Definitely worth a stopping by and looking around! I'm not exactly sure how to label this place. It's not a farmers market, it's not a flea market and it's not a consignment shop. It's a building that houses the products of a small group of vendors who use one cash register in the center of the building. As well there is a snack and coffee shop near the rear as well as access to a large fenced-in dining area out back that doubles as a beer garden and cornhole venue. The products for sale include crafts, some food items as well as clothing and novelties. Overall it's an interesting and diverting place to spend an hour or so. read more

I would like to start my review of this marketplace as a wonderful collection of goods from local artisans and a great collection of unique and one of a kind gifts. We were visiting family to celebrate a birthday and she wanted to take us to this location and we were looking to spend a decent amount of money there as we all are very supportive of local small businesses. This review in no way reflects on the artists that are showing their wares at this boutique collective as there were so many unique and creative items that we enjoyed seeing. However, our trip was cut short due to their new policy on bags. While I understand anti-theft for small businesses, I do not believe that this situation was handled well. To be clear, the policy stated backpacks, large backs and oversize jackets. Understandable right? Like a lot of businesses, no large bags or coats. We've seen it in other places. My family member was wearing a purse backpack approximately the size of 8"x6", which carries life saving medications (epipen/rescue inhaler) as well as her wallet and cell phone. That was pretty much all it could fit. It will barely fit a Kindle. I will also mention that she dresses goth and has bright colored hair and piercings as I speculate this might have contributed to some kind of singling out. We had been shopping for the better part of an hour by this point and were in a section of the store where the manager/owner (I assume) was discussing rental space with a potential new artist/client. It was all of a sudden an issue that my family member had a "backpack" on and that she needed to leave it at the front desk. Thinking it was in consideration that some items in shops were fragile, my family member offered to carry it by hand in front of her with the straps like a purse because that is what it was. She was then informed that it wasn't allowed due to the anti-theft policy and the manager was very blatant about how these artists pay their mortgages with the income they get from this market and that other businesses around the area are doing it as well. The only business that this manager mentioned was a gas station, which has an entirely different clientele for theft. The interaction was extremely antagonistic but my family member finally relented to put it in the "secure" area. The manager didn't even point out the bag that my husband was carrying with honey we had purchased even though it was bigger than the purse. We also realized after the fact that my husband's cargo pant pockets were bigger than her bag. He could have fit all of her stuff in one pocket and her bag rolled up in the other. That is how ludicrous the call out for this specific bag was. The "secure" area is a shelf by the front door. They have bike locks on it to put through the straps of the bag. Anyone can steal from it and it is easy access from the front door. The employee at the nearby counter, while she was nice, was not paying attention to the shelf at all. You had to lock your bag up and give the key back to the counter. This is not secure for multiple reasons. First, it does not stop other people opening up bags and taking things. Second, it is accessible to others who have access to the same key as it isn't in the sole possession of the person who secured their bag(s). My family member's bag was the only bag on the shelf and about a third of the female patrons had purses larger than that bag. It was at this point that my family member decided to take her bag back to the car as it was obvious that she was being singled out and this was a poor solution that would only change the main target of theft occurring at the location to that shelf. We did not stay much longer, as all of us were upset with how my family member had been treated on her birthday. This had been one of the places she was excited to show us during our visit and has now turned into a business she will no longer patronize. As handmade small business owners ourselves, we were looking at this as a potential venue for our own goods when we move to Maryland early next year. After seeing how this woman treated customers regarding this new policy, I was appalled. We have run our own small business for handmade goods for over ten years and a successful business plan accounts for some theft/shrinkage (even handmade goods). Treating customers like they are potential thieves is not the way to make a good name for yourself. Do better Shepherd's Old Field Market. read more

What a great addition to Southern Maryland!! This market is a collection of local businesses and products right near Downtown Leonardtown. There are clothing boutiques, local baked goods, meats, and produce, and great gifts! There are so many options for shopping, from locally made candles and decorations to beautiful art and furniture. This is absolutely worth a stop and it is by far the most exciting new business around. There will also be a coffee bar and a beer garden coming soon, which will be so much fun. I went here with my little cousin and family for Christmas. The stores and products were very nice, expensive but that's understandable for handmade and good quality . I took a picture of a sticker and put my phone in my pocket as a security guard was coming up the stairs, and he thought I was shoplifting(which was understandable as I know there are problems with this around the holiday). However what was odd was that he followed very uncomfortably close to me and my little cousin (both of us young girls) for I think around 45 minutes. He was wearing a black sweatshirt that said security in white printed font (and I think just jeans?) but I couldn't tell if he actually worked at the market or just had a weird sweatshirt. He followed us from room to room pretty closely (at one point he was so close I could tell he had been smoking) and there was multiple times pulled my cousin closer to me or made her leave an area quickly because I was unsure of his intentions and he was too close(as he never came up and talked to us at all about any problem or spoke to us at all). It made me very nervous/really uncomfortable but it's very possible I'm just being overly paranoid as a teenage girl who's had problems with being followed in the past. He finally left when we sat down at an open area. A manager came and spoke to us but again not about any problems just asking us if we found everything all right? Which was fine and she was very nice, I appreciated the check in as I imagined we looked very anxious. I wish I had brought up the problem then but I was so frazzled and just glad the whole thing was over that we just made small talk. Which I guess could look suspicious maybe? Idk I wish I had been more forward because when she left we heard multiple staff members talking about how suspicious we were and things along those lines. I wasn't sure it was about us but my cousin was convinced it was and asked if we should go and tell them we weren't stealing. I told her they probably weren't talking about us and sent her to find her dad because she was a little upset as I played on my phone. I tried not to think about it but again as we passed the check out area we heard the staff talking about how weird we being by the stickers and just in general negative things and I realized she was right and they were talking about us specifically. But still at this point no one had approached us or spoken to us about a problem so I just felt kind of upset that they would talk about us when we were five feet away instead of coming up to me or something idk. Our family and I left the store as I started telling my aunt about everything. We had stood outside the store for about five minutes before they finally decided they needed to call me back in to speak to me (I thought it was strange that they waited to approach me until I had left the store already). A woman pulled me and my mother into a side room and had a conversation with us about possible suspicion and she was very nice but I couldn't understand why she had waited this long and brought me back into the store to address it. I explained the sticker had some sensitive content so I was taking a picture for a friend to see if they wanted it instead of buying it in front of my cousin but I was so frazzled I don't think she believed me. I turned out all of my pockets and showed her my bag (which she said I didn't have to do) I tried to tell her about my experience with the security guard. She explained that he had been trained to look for suspicious movements (such as putting away a phone too fast?) then talked about how this store was peoples livihood that people would be stealing from. She was very nice and sent us on our way after I said I had taken nothing. I understand there is an uptake in holiday shoplifting but I felt as if this was a really weird way to handle it. Instead of the security guard(who still never spoke to us about what he saw) speaking to any of us about the problem they had a grown man tail a teenage girl and a ten year old from room to room, and he would kind of back off when we were with an adult and then when we left pick it right back up. Then before talking to us about a problem the staff talked behind our backs in front of us twice? And then when they finally did decide to confront us it was after we had already left the store and was on the street where they had to ask us to re enter the shop then pulled us into a side room only for us to say I didn't take anything and I wasn't really able to address how uncomfortable the tailing made me. I feel if we had been approached directly after or even like ten minutes after this would be a simple miscommunication and all of this could have been avoided. I wasn't sure if I should write this review because I really like the business(I go there all the time) but it upset my cousin (and me) a lot and was just not a great way to handle it. read more
