Great chicken fried steak, with mashed potatoes and fried okra! Been there several times and will continue to go.

Food was underwhelming. The coffee was very good. The server was available at every turn. The chicken fried steak was passable. The gravy and the home fries were very bland. This place absolutely lives up to its name and reputation. I went this last Saturday with my mother and three sisters, and we chose it because of it's name as much as anything. I split a large chicken fried steak with one sister, while two others split the Reuben. Both were outstanding. We decided to split our lunches because we had to save room for the pie we saw in the case. I had the chocolate cream pie and it was really good. I also heard the coconut cream was really good. You can only order it by the slice in the restaurant, but you can order full pies with one day's notice. Our server was the baker, and a hoot to match. Just a little ol' cafe joint with some tasty grub. Probably seats about 48 in the main room with an additional 32 in a side room. There were only 2-3 tables eating when we arrived at 6:45pm on a Saturday evening. I like to see these home grown establishments survive so I'm assuming they do better at breakfast and/or lunch. There's a mixture of tables and chairs -- the kind of tables with local ads placed on them; hadn't seen that in awhile. My brother and I ended up ordering the same thing -- chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, fried okra, and Texas toast. The CFS was really quite good. The gravy was good but a little too peppery for me. The mashed potatoes were fine -- quite average. The fried okra was really good. They were lightly breaded/fried. I normally like more breading etc but these were very tasty. We got the smaller CFS meal for $8.95. I can't imagine eating a larger portion (which was $2 more). My brother might've gotten pie for dessert but they were down to just one piece. They were making more in the kitchen but they were for the following day. So, no store bought pies here! Anyway, we'd have no problem stopping in here again to try something else or get another CFS. read more

It's a dive, but who cares? Good home-cooked comfort food, Texas style. Breakfast is served all day, as well as sandwiches and burgers.

I rated it Five starts cuz they don't have a TEN. Absolutely the best chicken fried steak I have had in 40 years. Don't let the parking, the outside, or the wacky broads fool you. This place serves the best grub around!!! We loved it! I had a chicken fried steak breakfast (at noon) and my bride had a Rueben. Both were AWESOME! Get the "small chicken fried steak unless you are mighty hungry or want to take some home. Every platter we saw come out of the kitchen was heaping with amazing looking food. Maybe we came on a bad morning but we were not impressed. Sadly, we tried this place out on our son's 4th birthday and though we mentioned it was his birthday several times, no one ever even looked at him, let alone said happy birthday. Not that they have to, but I guess that just gives you an idea of the customer service. Our drinks were never refilled, our food was plated wrong, so we had to swap eggs and such, without even so much as a small apology, and the food was mediocre at best. My husband's chicken fried steak was a far cry than any pictured. It was about the size of my Palm and he said it didn't taste well at all. The pancakes were decent, but that should be fairly simple. Stopped by this restaurant with three others after attending the Oatmeal Festival in Bertram. Three of we four ordered the chicken fried steak, which was good, though not great. Onion rings were GREAT! Mashed potatoes were of the instant variety, and the fried okra was pretty good. Coconut pie was good, and I especially liked the whipped cream topping instead of meringue. Service was just short of shitty. I would come again to try breakfast if I were sure the waitress we had today wasn't there. read more

Super friendly, nice locals were present for an early morning breakfast. A friend and I were camping at Inks Lake and it was a chilly morning, so we came in. The place was homey and the food was good, but we saw 4 roaches in the span of 45 minutes. Not good. read more

Found this quirky place after a couple of days camping at Inks Lake. The breakfast was freshly made, quickly served, and tasted great! We were so excited to find this place with good reviews, we just wanted to stop have a nice breakfast. When we got inside, we sat down quickly and served coffee. It was probably 10 to 15 minutes before the waitress came to take our order. We waited nearly 35 minutes for our breakfast! This is just way too long, breakfast is not rocket science. Usually a good meal, but two times that I've gotten sausage (once as a side of pancakes, once in an omelet) I've had an upset stomach afterwards. Stick to bacon for your breakfast meat. Good wait that apologizes for their mistakes, and really good pancakes. Wait times are usually a bit too long for what you're getting, and if you sit on the chairs with cloth seats, you'll wonder if they clean them. So we had super great service the first time eating here. The food was as expected, not much more. But it was cheap and filling. And our server was patient and kind. Our second time around we brought the family to share the good experience. We were squeezed into two tables fitted in front of the register where everyone came to pay. We literally had people bumping and roaring behind us while we ate. Our waitress was the daughter of another I guess, who clocked out without a word after taking our order. She mumbled, had no knowledge of the menu and couldn't put off a friendly vibe to put her through college, sorry to say. Her mother came to the table and apologized, retook our orders and half of them still came out wrong. The food was less than expected, our drinks weren't filled unless we hunted someone down and our server changed yet again to a lady who was not so helpful. I wouldn't come here again when it's busy. When my bandmate Kurt Baumer, who toured the country with the hit-machine LoneStar & Dale Watson scientifically sampling the chicken fried steaks in every diner, cafe, & truckstop from Spokane, WA to Tallahassee, Fl first tasted this Hill Country treasure's chicken fry, he determined immediately that this was indeed the best chicken friend steak in the world. With my extensive research I had to concur. The second time we performed their we tried their cheeseburger made with handmade patties, fresh baked buns, and served with hand cut French fries. I announce to the patrons that night that we had found, perhaps, the 2nd best cheeseburger in the world. Now it make be the best, but I'm still actively researching the others out there. You'll love all the food here including the chicken fried chicken. Remember to sub the hand cut fries for the mash potatoes. I enjoyed the philly cheese steak sandwich and thought it was good. Then came a piece of homemade cherry pie - definitely a great choice! My husband order one egg over easy, bacon and potatoes. The potatoes seem to be pre-boiled and are cut in quarters and then lightly fried. He did not care for them. I had a BLT. The bacon, like the bacon on my husband's plate had been fried much earlier and then set back somewhere. I guess I am picky, but I like bacon cooked when ordered and not have that "set back" toughness. There was a lot of bacon on the sandwich and only one small thin slice of pastel colored tomato (I asked for more tomato to cover the sandwich). The lettuce was the dark green leaf lettuce. A little pricey at 7.75 for the size and would have preferred the boiled eggs that were suppose to come with it actually be on it.
