THEY ALLOW DOGS IN THE MARKET, on leashes, puppy carriers, dog strollers JUST NASTY........ FARMERS MARKET ???? I only see 2 or 3 vendors with produce, I originally hoped I t would get better over time. and nope it hasnt same 2 to 3 vegetable vendors same thing very week. 2/5 Stars I come here for 2 places Martins Meats 5/5 Stars and Howies Micheladas,5/5 Stars and other than that i don't even know why I continue to come here, I can get those any day of the week, I guess this "Farmer's Market" is not my particular cup of tea ,I have been spoiled in Ventura and San Diego all my life so im biased on the lack of variation of produce and vendors, I have tried to give them a chance, I usually am disappointed every time I come, nothing original, two or 3 places sell almost the exact same items here, and certain places are either out of what I want to get or they don't make that particular item the weekend that I come. I show up before 10am everytime and it hasn't made a difference if I showed up right before closing to get some Chamoy candies, and a Agua Fresca from Howie or some rib tips or breakfast tacos/burritos from Martin. Both 5/5 Stars Dont get me wrong for Bakersfield this is a 5 but we've gotta have more variety Final rating 2/5 Stars until they bring in some produce, and not puppies..

Let's get real, we are talking Oildale here, not central Bakersfield or the Rosedale area. On the Thursday evenings that I am in town, I make it a point to peruse each and every merchant, which by the way consists of more than just 3 tents. I have purchased my fruits and veggies, natural dog treats, hand made craft items, local bee honey and even brought home a hot dinner for us to enjoy. Oh ya, and don't forget to tip the wonderful guitarist/vocalist who keeps us entertained. Overall this most certainly is in no way a Kaiser Sunday market and not even close to the Brimhall Saturday market, but it does have what I need to keep me going throughout the week. Don't be detoured by the negative comments and think about it in a positive. Since it is smaller it's easy to find what you want, purchase your items and then get home and spend your valuable time preparing a healthy meal for your beautiful family.

The Big Red Barn has a lot of fresh fruit, baked goods, and other treats to choose from. The real fun is when you pick the fruit yourself though. We got ourselves some sweet blackberries to take home. Out on the farm, we had the best tractor ride and learned some fun facts about fruits, as well as slid on the huge slide and played some outdoor games. While we were here, we ate some oakie pies. My favorite is thanksgiving dinner. It tastes just like November-- Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and gravy. They have other tasty savory pies like the chicken pot pie, blueberry pulled pork, and the breakfast pie. Of course, you could get some sweet ones too! The service is very friendly and the farm truly has fun for everyone! I can't wait to come back for stone fruit season.

If you decided to pick fruit you pay by the pound at the end which is reasonable but the fee per person just to walk around seemed on the high end. They have goats, chickens, peacocks, a variety of birds, chickens and roosters and cool art displays. We saw signs for paintballing and hayrides though I didn't see any wagons operating. The main reason we stopped was to try the Okie Pies. I had never heard of them and I am always looking to try new things. They remind me of a large empanada or handheld meat pie. We tried 3 savory and 1 dessert Okie Pie. They were out of blueberry so we settled for Apple and it was good but super sweet. I love desserts and unless you're a diehard apple pie fan you may find this to be too sweet. Savory flavors were salsa verde, chicken pot pie, and blueberry BBQ pork. The blueberry BBQ sounds odd but it was everyone's favorite. Everyone was very friendly and there was even someone who let the kids pet the goats and roosters. We'll stop on the way back home for more blueberry BBQ Okie Pies.

You can either buy your baskets right away or look around the shop. Lots of good stuff in the shop, but you should wait until you are heading out to grab stuff. After we paid for our baskets, we loaded into the tram and was driven to the cherry area. When you stopped, the attendances guided us to the 3 rows we can pick from. I understand to keep the crowd controlled and make sure the farm doesn't get trampled. The weather was perfect so we took our time, walked to the back of the rows and moved forward as we picked. They were red and beautiful, grabbed our baskets once they were full and headed back. He did buy some strawberries and honey comb inside the Little Purple Barn. You do have to come early for the pies, there may not have any later in the day. The cherry picking is only on the weekends.

The Ridgecrest Farmers market is now starting to feel like the Farmers markets that I've been to in larger towns. There were about 3 vendors, two were produce, the last was pastries and jars of what appeared to be jams/jellies. My impression was that this is not a true farmer's market, because most of the produce seemed to be collected, and many had stickers with barcodes on them, ready to be scanned in a supermarket. Prices were almost exactly what you'd pay in a supermarket. One lady asked if the produce was organic from the larger vendor, and he replied that it was not, but it was pesticide free. He told her that even with "organic" food, it's hard to determine exactly how organic it is, and that oftentimes it's not. She gave him a snooty "I only eat organic" and went to the other vendor, which made me laugh. People like that just crack me up. I'd like to sprinkle some Monstanto RoundUp on her wheatgrass and run it over with a Prius, just for good measure. I left there with a bunch of kale, a few apples, and some avocados. I didn't even really want an avocado, but my family owns an avocado farm, so I figure I'd throw the industry a bone. The kale and the apples were great (juiced as soon as I got home), the avocado was crap. Just my luck. Bring your eco bag, your hungry eyes, fire up the hybrid or Subaru AWD, and enjoy shopping in a fun setting (a movie theater parking lot).
