What to expect when your expecting... a root canal. I recently got my first root canal. There are a lot of scary stories out there, but I wasn't too worried because the referral I received to get a root canal was by Dr. Koehlander and he has proven to be an excellent reference over the years. He referred me to Cameron Fife at FOlsom Endodontics. Still there are nerves that go with a first time of anything... especially dental work, which by fiat is a unpleasant experience. Even if it isn't... the mental images we all get for root canals and any sort of drilling going on... in your mouth is uncomfortable at best. Just the sound of dental equipment is horrifying to many people. So, if you are having a root canal - here is what to expect: 1) You will have to get a recommendation letter from your normal dentist to come here. I don't know if they accept walk-ins, but I am sure they do. They only specialize in root canals. 2) You will have an "inspection" appointment where they will check the teeth causing you pain. If you are in a lot of pain they can get you some pain killers (Thank God!) They will get you a date when the root canal can be done. 3) On the day of my appointment I stretched my jaw a lot so they could have good access to my teeth. When you get there they will numb you with shots and let that settle in. They have a TV on the ceiling which is nice so you can watch TV the entire time and try and take your mind off the drilling. Your mouth will be open a lot, but they give you a jaw rest. One gross thing about the procedure is they are drilling out decaying/rotting teeth... which smells really gross. It's your fault... it's your teeth... deal with it! Then after they drill your roots in your tooth, they fill it with goop (very scientific I know) and then cap it off. (Sometimes the cap is permanent or temporary... they'll let you know which and if you have to see your normal doctor later to get a permanent filling over the root canal entrance point. They have to take multiple X-rays to make sure they got everything. This whole procedure took about 2.5 hours for me with my mouth open for about 1.5 hours. Few notes: 1) It didn't hurt at all. 2) At first it is awkward and gross feeling to have so much drilling going on in your mouth. The TV helps a lot to take your mind of what they are doing. 3) They are very gentle. It's nice that this is ALL they do. It's their one specialty. They are good at it. 4) My recovery was swift. I took some ibuprofin for a few days and I have had no complications... pain... not even soreness. I have finally been able to eat ice cream on the left side of my mouth in a very long time... and it was weird without all that shooting pain.... but very nice. Overall a very nice experience. The entire staff is friendly and the facility is new and top notch. Having a root canal isn't something we want to do.... but are forced to do. I couldn't have picked a better Endodontist for my first root canal. I work in the Dental Field and have seen it all. I was nervous about my appointment because I know alot of Dentists and Specialists but not Endodontists. I found Dr. Hull through a co-worker. I was so nervous, but Dr. Hull put my mind at ease. He has great bedside manners and I did not feel a thing during my appointment. It was the easiest dental appointment I ever had. His assistant Sheila was also great. This office has super comfortable tempurpedic chairs with TV's on ceiling and head phones. It was like being at home in my bed, but with someone working in my mouth. Dr. Hull has a wonderful approach and bedside manner. His staff, Amanda and Sheila in particular, were friendly, calm and professional. When I was in so much pain and my mind is going a million places, it's very comforting to be handled with efficiency and deliberate thoughtful actions. Gina was very kind and squeezed me in the next day for a consultation and they were able to schedule my root canal for the next week. Dr. Fife even took the time to talk to my family dentist after my consultation to make sure I would receive the best treatment possible. Was referred to them by my dentist, and I must say, they are as good as they say in the reviews. Everyone was nice and easygoing. LOVED the TV watching! As the majority concurs, going to the dentist is just the worst, but I must say, this was the most comfortable dental-related appointment I have ever had. I was referred from my dentist to have a major root canal on a Friday at 4:00 to set the appointment asap and Folsom Endodontics took me in on Monday. Very grateful they could fit me in. Amanda told me what to except and she told me the price since this was coming out of my pocket and from the time I walked in I was treated with care. Dr. Fife has the best equipment that other Endodontics wished they had and he took care of my root canal with ease. As far as getting a root canal goes...this place is top notch! Very professional. I had two root canals in a span of less than two weeks. It was stressful for me. But Dr. Fife was gentle and attentive. He explained every step to me and kept checking in with me to make sure I was okay. The staff was also very kind and professional. I always grew up hearing getting a "root canal" was one of the most painful things ever. Well, so much for that. Dr. Hull has performed two root canals on me in the last year, and I can honestly day I did experience a bit of pain. Great facility, comfy chair, overhead TV, etc., and the staff is uber friendly. And, they were more affordable than the place my dentist tries to refer me to, by about $400.00 (if you pay with debit/cash). The lack of pain does make me think about my dentist's office however, since my fillings are never pain free. Regardless, great place for endo work! read more

I went into this office nervous as heck. I had never gotten a root canal and of course have only heard horror stories about them. I walked out of the office surprisingly relaxed. Dr. Hull was amazing, and really does care about his patients. It took a little more than normal to numb me up, but he made sure I was completely numb before continuing with the drilling. The procedure took around an hour and 35 minutes and I was able to watch TV on the ceiling with headphones through the entire thing. Despite having all this done I was really relaxed during the procedure and felt no pain at all. If you have to get a root canal done I highly recommend Dr. Hull and his staff! read more

I've had 4 Root Canals in 4 different offices (3 in Marin County) and this one was by far the best! Very professional, kept me comfortable and very little after effects. I've had more after pain from routine fillings. The staff and entire procedure was better than I've experienced any where else. I strongly recommend Folsom Endodontics and if I need their services again I would not hesitate to return.
