If I had gone on a day when the temperature was in the double digits in Fahrenheit, I might have…read moregiven this park at least 4 stars, but when I visited on Father's Day, there wasn't really much to do. Scorching hot temperatures scared everyone away because none of the kids would want to play on the playground there, though I did see one family just sitting there, possibly resting during a long road trip. Otherwise, it was literally a ghost town minus the tumbleweeds. I stopped by this park to just get away from city life. Well actually, I wanted to visit the nearby Nekter Juice Bar because they a Father's Day promo going on that would only work for that day and that day only. I had already visited the other Nekter location in the Greater San Antonio area, but wanted to pay a visit to this location aloof from the urban life. Bullis County Park and Nekter are just across from one another, opposite Borgfield Dr. After leaving Nekter with smoothie in hand, I drove up Old Blanco and parked in the parking lot right in front of the playground. As I mentioned, nobody was playing in the playground. I did see a pavilion, which allowed me to rest in the shade and take more photos of the park while sipping on my smoothie. The park wasn't the greatest, I can say. Let's just say the grass is greener on the other side lol. I was, however, fascinated by some rock and log formation near the pavilion. There are a handful of picnic tables in the pavilion that you could throw a party at. However, you'll need to reserve the space beforehand; call in advance to do so! On the south side of the park, there is a softball field, which surprise surprise, nobody was there during my visit. However, I was fascinated by the number of dandelions I saw in the outfield. Nice to see, but I'm sure outfielders will be trampling over them while trying to catch a fly ball. To the west, there is nothing but trees. The grounds immediately around the pavilion have seen better days. Grass isn't very abundant here. It almost looked like the cows have eaten most of the grass here! Not that I'm comparing this park to Brackenridge Park, which I had visited the weekend before, but it was kind of a boring visit overall to Bullis County Park. Then again, if school were in session, I'm sure it would have been loads better with kids enjoying the playground and possibly frolicking through the flowers. I say this because it's real close to Timberwood Park Elementary School, and it would make for a nice place to unwind and relax after school, if the weather were nicer, that is. 3 stars for now. I still recommend stopping by if you want to stretch your legs, but don't expect anything memorable here. The only thing memorable about my visit to this park was sipping on my cold smoothie, which allowed me to stay at the park for a while without burning in the hot sun.

Parking is close by or close to the bridge. Visitors can also fish near the bridge as well. There are also water fountains for humans and pets next to the public restrooms. There are benches along the path and trash cans. Also, this place is great for capturing photos of nature. The area is a flood zone so be careful when it rains. During our exploring, we discovered a windmill and a cluster of old stones hidden just a few inches beneath the surface. We managed to wrap up 10 miles of hiking and climbing. For fit people this is a great place to hike!! I took a look at the class room very nice setting. We had the pleasure to meet David Goree. He is the person that teaches crafts to children's and has knowledge about history of the park. He was very helpful and attentive to us. Keeping in mind that is part of the parks amenities I recommend to find information about classes and activities for children's and take time to take your children's for a great experience. The reason that I held back and gave 4stars because of the no dogs rule!!

A most excellent bird sanctuary - they even have numerous "blinds" scattered about the 124 acre…read moreproperty! Not to mention all the different trails and options. I especially loved the trails full of the huge, ancient trees that seemed to make long tunnels! The property is huge and I was there for hours lol! I could've stayed longer!! There are so many trails that take you through so many varied habitats with all sorts of wildlife! I visited this past spring (April) and saw rabbits and a ton of different birds!! I even got three from my birding life-list: a Tufted Titmouse, a Painted Bunting, and an Indigo Bunting!! I was so excited! The sanctuary is gated private property so you have to get permission to enter but it's very very easy. All you have to do is fill out the contact form and let them know when you want to visit. They're very responsive and accommodating. They replied to me very quickly and allowed my visit - even though it was short notice. They will email you instructions and a gate code to enter. It's free to visit - all they ask is that you leave a completed checklist (provided) indicating which birds you saw and how many. They provide the checklists and also trail maps in a kiosk at the parking lot. And the parking lot is paved with ample spaces. I would consider the property mostly handicap accessible - the trails are not paved but they are well maintained and flat. There were some water crossings that even had little bridges with ramps. Very thoughtful layout! They also provide a port-a-potty on site - and happily accept donations to help with the cost of that. This is an amazing, well maintained sanctuary that provides such a quality environment for wildlife so I was very happy to donate! I had a blast here! Highly recommend!

Follow the road around the pond and you'll find maps and a shelter, plus the trailhead to go north/upstream along the South Salado Creek Greenway Trail, part of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System, towards Comanche Park and Covington Park. If you walk along the pond downstream, over the footbridge, you'll find a trail marker, a crosswalk, and a turnoff to a newer trail section of South Salado Creek. If you see a set of switchbacks, you know you're on the right path. This trail goes about 3 miles to a trailhead on Southeast Military Dr.

The trail runs into multiple little parks that have a playground and benches and whatnot and it parallels this cute little stream. Most of the trail is shaded by trees which made it nice to run in the heat. I didn't take any pictures unfortunately, but just believe that this is yet another great outdoor space offered by San Antonio!
