I felt completely unwelcome and discriminated against. I left feeling humiliated. No one should be…read moretreated like this. Today, I walked in and there were three stylists. No one greeted me. One was sitting doing nothing but completely ignored me -- I assumed he was on break. Then a man walked in after me, and that same stylist immediately stood up and began cutting his hair without ever acknowledging me. I didn't want to cause a scene, so I stayed quiet, hoping one of the others would help. But the second stylist who is almost done with his client, instead of helping me, also avoided me and asked me to wait for the third person as if no one actually wanted to cut my hair. At that point, I felt so unwelcome and uncomfortable that I had to leave. I don't know if it was because I'm a woman, or because I'm Asian, or something else -- but I felt ignored, dismissed, and discriminated against.

Before I lived in Westchester County, I used to go to Astor Place Barbershop in Manhattan which wasn't horrible but nothing comes close to Jacks. My first 10 years I had Jack and the past 9 I've had Eli, his brother. It's a family run business where the service is always exceptional and I always feel that when I walk in I may be tired and haggard looking, but when either Jay or Justin have finished working their magic, I feel years younger and I'm rejuvenated. And according to my wife, I look pretty darn good (she is only referring to my haircuts)! Recently I began growing a beard and I am loving the hot towel treatment that I'm getting every time I come in for a trim! These barbers know what they are doing and having their expertise at work on my face and my hair keeps me feeling fantastic. I neglected to write down a review weeks prior, so I am on it right now…read more (three weeks earlier, on a Monday and to the best of my knowledge) I went down to Handlebar's to get a buzz cut! My usual barber Astrit was on vacation at the time so the folks recommended me a barber whose name I could not remember except that he shared Astrit's heritage. I was given espresso and biscuits and the barber went down to work. As we converse, he also worked on the shape up, never forgetting to take out the mirror for me to see the results. What sets it apart from most barbershops in White Plains, which were mostly urban and working class, is the setting with a brick wall facing the barber chairs and mostly catering to a middle class clientele, but there is no competition whatsoever between the shop and others as far as I know. Sometimes, I just need to get pampered for lack of a better word. One of these days, a shave would be nice, but I am in no rush at the moment!

He asked what I wanted, listened and made some recommendations, most of which I took. First a great haircut, then the shave. Hot towel, hot foam, straight edge, an amazing pampering. I'd highly recommend Astrit This was my first visit, I was looking for someplace that would be great with a beard and even though this was much more expensive than I was used to I gave it a shot.
