I want to preface this with the dog we adopted is a good dog and we love her. We adopted our dog in February. We were told she's a great dane/whippet mix. We did a DNA test, she's half dane/half pitbull. Not a big deal, but we are a military family and some places we live have breed restrictions. We absolutely did not want a pitbull. The initial adoption process was fine. The foster gave us a call and was super nice, however (personality wise) the pup she described and the dog we got were very different. For instance, we thought she was okay with other dogs. She's been kicked out of day care for rough housing. We've hired a trainer, worked with her endlessly, tried to socialize her.. we've made progress, but weren't expecting to spend the time and money for the basics. She's also very protective of the home which has pros and cons. The biggest issue with our adoption was we were told the dog was spade. Last week we noticed our pup was in heat. Brought her to the vet, not spaded. We did receive paperwork provided by the rescue she was fixed, but after reading it, it's clear they never really checked. It says she has a scar. Now we're dealing with keeping a close eye on her until she's out of heat, paying for the surgery, and recovery after the surgery. It would have been nice for someone to say "hey we think she's been fixed, but not sure.." Again, we love our dog and wouldn't trade her for anything at this point. We just felt this rescue didn't really do their due diligence or know anything about the dog. We could have adopted from the shelter near our house for 40 bucks and gotten a pitbull mix who was actually fixed. We paid 600 for our dog. read more

My experience with critter cavary was only helpful ,reliable and reassuring While we applied initially for one rescue when she was already spoken for volunteer Carol Stewart immediately went to work to find the right match for us. Everything they told us about our little Scout was true she's sweet loving and easy-going and best yet came house trained. We never had a lap dog before (our former family dogs weighed at least six times this little one) but her foster mom gave us a pretty good idea of what to expect . I commend the foster mom as that family clearly took wonderful care of Scout before we adopted her. They sent us videos and many pictures (as did Carol)and we were able to talk on the phone as well as text each other. I realize it seems a little offputting on how you receive the dogs from this rescue (For us it was 3:30 in the morning and it was 10° out) however it was clear the truck was very clean and well-maintained and the dogs were not in any distress in the transport. This will be a long one...bare with me! After searching and searching for months I applied for what was listed as a "7 y/o Shih Tzu." They claimed she was house trained and was an elderly owner surrender from a high kill shelter. I applied, within days my references were called. Both of my references reported only being asked if they thought I was a responsible pet owner and how long the dog would be alone a day, both calls less than 60 seconds. My vet references were never checked and almost immediately I was called and hustled into a next day transport. I was connected with the foster mom who they had claimed had her for a month, she reported the same..."sweet girl, house broken, and 7 y/o who had been vetted and was up to date on shots." Fast forward to the cost...I get an invoice for $1100!!! I could not believe that price for a dog of that age but at that point we were already in love so I agree. I am then told they only accept PayPal friends and family...anyone who shops online knows this is a HUGE red flag. I let them know I would not pay unless it was protected through goods and services particularly that sum of money and I would not be adopting. They finally agree. We get there to get her...immediately notice she is definitely a mutt of some sort with extremely bowed front legs (poor girl), appears younger than 7 and is infested with fleas. Within 2 days of having her home she has 2 seizures. Off to an emergency vet we go. Testing and scans deduced that she had a seizure disorder and low and behold was only 4 years old. In reviewing her records that came with her with the vet she had not had any shots or anything until the day I committed to adopting her despite having been fostered for a month. We've had her now for 3 months and she is impossible to house train (just another lie) and this past weekend had to take her to Cornell ER for what we now know is a bladder tumor. I am now $3k deep in a dog that is truly the sweetest thing but not at all what was portrayed. I thank God every day she got lucky enough to be with folks who are willing to make this commitment both financially and in caring for her. This has been a very hard lesson and I really should have trusted my gut! Even if they didn't know any of her health concerns I would still be concerned with the amount of money charged and the little checking they did on my application. DO NOT adopt from this "rescue!" I do not believe for a minute they are a true non-profit. Very Upset. I had to put my 8 month kitten down due to FIV, that wasn't disclosed as well as ringworm. Problems started from the start. They had messed up his paperwork and actually told us that we were getting a female. After that was fixed, we still received the wrong paperwork of another cat's records. Apparently they had been treating the ringworm and decided to stop the treatment halfway so we could get the kitten sooner, but didn't let us know. I had noticed it and reached out and they confirmed it was indeed ringworm. This should have been explained so I could keep an eye on it. This has been a nightmare. We had lost out family cat of 13 years and wanted to get another. We were not ready to deal with losing another cat so soon. I understand there are cats with FIV that deserve a home, but people need to be aware that is what they are getting into. This has been terrible for Binx and our family. read more

I have been reading through these reviews good and bad. Need to add my own as someone involved with CCR. The bad reviews sadden me that these people had bad experiences. This rescue is a volunteer based rescue. There are people who foster, people who drive, people who handle paperwork, people who check references and do verifications, people who train/rehabilitate, and shelter directors (not part of the rescue) that keep in contact with Candace for help in moving shelter residents. When dealing with a "volunteer" based rescue, there are a whole plethora of different personalities because the individuals who volunteer are different. For anyone who has been employed, you will understand that personalities don't always mix and when one person is "rubbed the wrong way", another may be just fine. Perception is different for different people! As for Candace Giles, every moving part in the rescue goes through her, coordination, decision, scheduling, planning, action, etc.... like moving puzzle pieces around trying to complete the picture. Hopefully anyone can see how time consuming and at times difficult this must be. I am sure it can be frustrating as well. For those who complain because an email is not answered fast enough or she has not gone out of her way for them, just remember that she deals with hundreds of people. Mistakes do get made sometimes due to the pure volume of animals being moved through the rescue, but we are all human. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle and a lot of people playing. Especially when many animals are transported hundreds of miles to their new adopters each week. Seeing accusations that the rescue or Candace is money hungry and they don't care about the animals is just not accurate!!! Although it is not mine or anyone else's business, if she does take a salary, it is perfectly legal regardless of the non profit status. I know the woman and know she spends j98% of her time on CCR business. As for complaints about the adoption fee, I personally have been surprised by the amount of money that has been spent to help animals have a good life and to "just live". One of my own foster pups is requiring a specialized surgery out of town that in the end will most likely total $10k in Vet cost. I have heard stories from other fosters of the same nature. I was flabbergasted when I found out the cost but Candace did not bat an eye about it and just planned to help that dog regardless of the cost. The adoption fee is high but that is there for a reason. If you are not willing to pay the fee then go somewhere else to adopt. There is no need to make mean or snarky reviews when you are uninformed. Lastly, if you adopted a sweet pet from this rescue and it was unknowingly sick or became ill, I am truly sorry this happened. Where do these animals come from..... shelters, overwhelmed breeders, hoarders, unsuspecting people finding puppies/kittens under their deck or wild in the woods, places of employment from again strays, abandon buildings, people not wanting their pets anymore and looking for a place to give them up. etc..... You get the picture. Many times they come in lacking... parasitic, heartworm positive, flea infested, sick, underweight, anemic..... They are cared for and made healthy prior to adoption to the best of our ability. Dogs/cats receive a thorough Veterinary exam (and testing) and any treatment necessary prior to being adopted. Some of them are not in foster homes for very long and we foster parents may not be aware of any underlying issues prior to adoption. I WILL NOT believe that ANYONE in this rescue would deliberately send a sick animal to a new home. From what I have experienced, the volunteers in this rescue care too much! Do you honestly think we would be volunteering if we didnt? I have been fostering with this rescue for 18 months now and 78 (all) of my foster dogs have found amazing homes with great families and several of those keep in touch with me!!! Soooo, if you have had a bad time with CCR, apologies that things were not better for you, but if you are angry because you expected to receive specialized treatment above and beyond the rest of the people wanting to adopt, then that is on you. We make every effort to make people happy but you cannot please everyone all the time. They didn't fully disclose the dogs health I was suppose to get. I kept asking for information. I got a call from their 'director' at 9pm at night yelling at me and saying she was pulling out. They did refund. Their prices are astronomically high compared to other rescues. I was so hurt I didn't get the dog I wanted. Looking back it was probably best. Makes me question their practices. We recently had to say goodbye to our family member due to late stage lung cancer. Today was our first venture into trying to reach out to rescue groups and humane societies. When Candace returned my call and we explained we were interested in learning more about their process because we wanted to make certain we and our young daughter were ready to move on to another family member, she was very rude. Her comments were that she had a hard time understanding why we would need to test waters with our child if we had already had a dog. She also said that since most of the foster families in her group worked, they were not interested in a family who was just testing waters and "shopping". She was very flippant about our desire to proceed cautiously with our daughter's heart, and honestly, came off as quite arrogant. We will not be pursuing the online application process with them, and will be discouraging others from doing the same. read more

We've been looking for a pup for some time now and I knew I wanted to rescue a pup first before we opt towards breeders. The process was easy, I made sure to read the requirements before applying for our pup. I commend all Shelter's with rigorous screening to make sure their animals goes to a good home. Critter Cavalry were one of them! It says a lot about a shelter with how they treat there pets. Especially when they want to make sure they're going to a good home fit for them. After we were told in a timely manner we were selected to adopt our pup. (Which is how it should go!) we picked up our pup in Maryland with a few other people. And we absolutely adore her so much. She's been spoiled since we got her. Candace and Tim (her husband, transported our pup) communicated really well with us. Kept us in the loop of our pup's health and what we needed to know about her likes and dislikes. I spoke to her foster mom as well to get all of the information I could get about our pup. The dog I adopted turned out to be quite a bit older than we were told. We loved her so of course we kept her anyway. I tried to foster a dog for them once, and I was given an extremely sickly special needs dog instead of the healthy pup that I was told I'd be fostering. I would never recommend this organization. Notorious for lying about the condition of the animals. They actually had the nerve to blame me when the dog I tried to foster developed some rare form of mange AFTER they had taken back custody. I sent them photos of my very healthy dog... with no mange. It wasn't contracted in my home. read more

We adopted Peanut (now Chaplin) two weeks ago. We were given plenty of information on him even before we met him virtually. We were able to ask a lot of questions about him during our visit and for followup. Any time we had questions, Carol, Candace, or Vivienne were responsive, patient, and kind. The foster mom Glenda was amazing. She spent a lot of time with us and responded quickly to our questions. The transport team kept us up to date as to their arrival time. They too were kind and efficient. One of the main things that impressed us greatly about Critter Cavalry was how selective they were in approving our adoption inquiry. We submitted pre-approved adoption inquiries for at least 6 other dogs and were rejected each time. The organization wants what's best for their critters and want to make sure the match is a good one on both sides. They matched us with an amazing pup. My husband and I volunteered as foster parents for Critter Calvary for 4-5 years. During that time, we fostered many, many dogs in our home. We can say unequivocally that Candice and Vivienne did an outstanding job managing this organization. They have saved many hundreds of dogs from unknown fates from animal shelters. Candice and Vivienne juggled the complicated logistics for every dog--picking up dogs from different shelters, taking to the vet, taking them to foster homes, vetting prospective new owners and transporting the dogs to their forever homes. It's a long and detailed process for each dog. If a dog foster had any medical issues, CC immediately got veterinarians involved. These are very nice and very dedicated women. We personally know what a good organization this is and we would not hesitate to adopt a pet from them. read more

Out of state adopters beware! They take advantage of your emotions and tell you it is $750 to $1000 to adopt from them and the don't even deliver the pets nearby you. you have to meet them at odd times for transport. Other rescues in the south and Tennessee charge reasonably around $500 or $600 total to adopt including transport to northeast. Critter Cavalry's team does not accept your questions, but that shouldn't stop you from asking them a lot of necessary questions that are creeping up in your mind. Only serious adopters ask them smart questions in advance of committing to a pet for a lifetime. Be a smart adopter, ask your questions, do thorough research and stay away from Critter Cavalry... before you have big regrets of choosing to support this organization with your money you could've given to better organization in Tennessee or the south. read more

Every interaction I had was professional and prompt. There were an amazingly large number of dogs available (a sorry state of affairs, indeed, as this indicates too many dogs are being abandoned). The application was appropriately thorough. I was kept updated regularly on my application process, then on my puppy's imminent arrival. I reached out to inquire about a 5 month old lab/dane mix and got a reply within a day. I worked with Ann-Marie and she was very easy to work with. She sent pictures, would reply to texts, and contacted my vet and references in a timely manner. The dog (FKA 'happy tail') was transported to MD happy and healthy. The transport service they use (I worked with Tim) was equally as responsive and would send text updates as they worked their way from TN to MD. Once they arrived, they were polite and seemed to treat the dogs in their vehicle well. The only reason I went with a 4 instead of a 5, is that we had to pickup our dog at a gas station in Hagerstown just after midnight. While I completely understand the logistics of transport and how timing is a no-win situation, I was holding my breath a little bit as saying "I'm getting a new dog from the gas station in the middle of the night!" would make a lot of people feel uneasy about the handoff. Even if it seems shady because of the time and place, I can assure you that it was a professional service and you don't have to worry about the odd timing. read more

I adopted my dog after a fire I had and my kids pediatrician recommended I get a dog to help cope with the loss of our cat due to the fire. We found our dog online and instantly fell in love with him . The description of our dog and the dog we received were totally different. When I picked him up at the parking lot he smelled so bad that I didn't even want to bring him in my home so we went straight to pet smart. After 20 minutes I get a call that after putting water on my dogs head they said he had been sprayed by a skunk and would cost me more money. Ok fine no problem that's fine. Once I bring my dog home who I was told us great with children isn't so great he was very territorial of any time of balls. Which made me nervous with my two year old son. Not only did I have to pay a 1000 dollars for one on one private sessions because he was so aggressive when he saw other dogs. That the group classes wouldn't work . Also for the first month every time I tried to pet him he would squint his eyes and lay down thinking I was going to hit him . Literally the saddest case his trainer have ever seen. Long story short he was part Pittbull as well they never told me that and my complex tried to evict me had to register him as a registered therapy dog and get doctors letters to fight to keep him. Long story short he didn't last longer than two years we just had to put him down he got very sick and was constantly having seizures randomly even in his sleep. The vets told me he was old and it could happen but the age on the paperwork they gave me and the age vet said he was 4 years different. I would never adopt a dog that was 7 years old knowing that his life span would be short and we already had a tragic lost of our cat . Please do not adopt from them . I will never own a pet again I am still in pain from my dog that I had to train and love because I don't know what he went through before and I wanted him to have a better life. However mine is alright because I lost my best friend because these people lied took my money just to get rid of a dog . Please beware read more

I just got my cat from them who is 9 months old. He has been having a sneezing fit and my first night with him, he was sneezing a lot of blood. I was very concerned and reached out to a woman named Gwyn who had been in contact with me and gave me the little cutie. Her answer was very alarming, she said that it was due to stress that he was sneezing blood. I knew instantly that something was wrong so I brought him to my nearest vet. They informed me that he had a respiratory infection and it's not curable but manageable with supplements he needs to take for the rest of his life. It's very contagious to other cats as well and when I picked him up, he was around maybe 4 other cats. When I reached out to Gwyn on the diagnosis, she pretty much told me that she disagrees because her vet never mentioned that, and also added that I can return him if I wanted. I still have the little guy and I'm giving him so much love and attention, I'm taking great care of him and I'm glad that his sneezing will subside once The supplements kicks in. I definitely don't recommend adopting from this agency because it seems like their system is unorganized and not properly taking care of the pets. read more

I adopted a dog from them about one year ago and while I love my dog more than anything, I do not love this agency. Since I was picking up my dog I asked if the $650 adoption fee could be lowered, as it mentioned the fee was so high due to the cost of relocating them. I was told "the fee was reduced, this is an excellent price for this wonderful dog". When I picked her up I was told she was microchipped, recently groomed, vaccinated and had a teeth cleaning, so she was in "great shape". About one week after adopting my dog I had followed up with Candace asking if she had received the Bordetella vaccine. In her email she was very rude, telling me this is something dogs should not get, but if I was "willing to risk their health", she could administer it. Since I would be boarding my dog in the future, and this was requirement I got the vaccine. When I asked for a letter stating this vaccine had been administered I was told I could have the empty vials of medicine, and if I needed a letter later I could have one. Two months after adopting my dog I took her to the vet. She had been itching terribly and stopped eating. At the vet I learned she had allergies, which is of no fault to Crittery Calvary; however, I was told she stopped eating due to issues with her teeth. The vet told me she estimated she would need about 5 teeth pulled, two of which were so badly decayed they the roots showing. I was told this would cost between $900-$1300. The vet assured me this type of decay did not occur in the brief two month period since I had adopted her. Since I had paid $650 for my dog and assured she was in good health, including a recent teeth cleaning, I reached out via email to Crittery Calvary asking if they were able to offer any assistance, whether that be financial or a preferred vet that could do the procedure at a reduced cost. I got no response! I expected at least an acknowledgement that the email was received and an answer to my inquiry, but got nothing. Fast forward another six months, I was needing to board my dog so I again reached out via email, asking if they could provide me with a letter indicating the date my dog receive the Boardetella vaccine. Again I got no response. So in order to board my dog, I had to pay out of pocket to have the vet re-administered the vaccine so I could have documented proof. My dog is my absolute life, I love her more than anything and I strive to give her the best life possible. I have paid thousands of dollars for her care since adopting her a year ago. I would not trade her for anything, but the lack of response I received from this agency following the adoption being completed is disgusting. Again a simple response acknowledging the email and telling me they were unable to assist would suffice. As a rescue agency, they allegedly love animals but, the lack of follow up after the adoption was completed made me feel as though they care more about simply getting paid for the dogs, rather than truly caring for them. I will always adopt dogs but in the future, I will certainly use a difference agency, and encourage everyone I know to do the same. read more

So I was suppose to pick my dog up next week in Connecticut. I just received a call tonight saying we aren't allowed to get our dog, because living in Massachusetts dogs that come to MA from shelters MUST BE quarantined for 48 hours. I talked to a vet in MA as well and she said the same thing. Dogs coming to MA from shelters out of this state must be quarantined. Because we're new dog owners so we have no idea about any of this! So this law isn't new. My vet said that shelters like critter Calvary do the drop offs in states that don't require this law, so it's more so brushed under the rug and the dogs are sent on their way. So when we just got the call saying we couldn't get the dog. Candace said because MA and the laws here regarding this are getting more strict now and she can't "risk it" Even though I found out this law has been in place since 2005! Now don't get me wrong, I never want a dog being "traumatized" by any means, but a dog getting quarantined isn't abuse at all, and even though it's not always ideal for the dog, it does help you and the dog in the long run so you don't come across any major health issues with your dog. So I found it very interesting that 1. Candace continued to allow dogs to come to MA knowing this law has been in place since 2005. The foster parent straight up told me they have so many people from MA who have adopted from their shelter. 2. My vet said plenty of shelters do the quarantine, but crittery Calvary doesn't and why? I don't not trust Candace one bit. And god knows where she really is getting these dogs from. So for people and families that have rescued from here - I am thrilled if you lucked out with a great dog, and all went well. But for those who had a negative experience when you got home health wise, with your dog, don't be surprised, where she refuses to get the proper treatment your dog needs before getting sent off. She claims it's because she cares about the dog. I call BS and believe she's all about the money and she's a sketchy human. Maybe I'm rambling because my husband and I were beyond thrilled to bring our dog home next week & now we aren't. And we're devastated. But I never want anyone to feel like how my husband and I feel now. So to save you the time - do not adopt here!! I am going to report her and do everything I can for her shelter to be looked into. Because this shouldn't happen to people wanting to adopt a dog, pay the deposit, get your hopes up, get ready for the dog to come, and just like that - nope you aren't getting the dog. I know dogs need loving homes but no matter what it still be done legally and the correct way. So these issues don't occur. It's awful, we're devastated, and I feel awful for these dogs being under her control. Beware! Dishonest organization. You will be made to disclose a LOT of personal information and in return know close to nothing about the animal you are adopting. The foster mom had my application and information, including required pictures of my family and home, for more than a week and no references were ever even called. Very little communication. When I pressed for a zoom call to see the dog to be sure of her personality, I was immediately told it had been adopted already. Ask yourself why all of this info is required, much more than other rescue organizations, along with an astronomical rescue fee of $700 if not more. This is supposed to be a non-profit and volunteer based organization; isn't $700 for a stray dog a bit much when every other foster-based rescue organization that also provides veterinary care and vaccines and microchips in the $150-300 range to adopt? This is a dishonest organization - read the negative reviews and take them to heart. read more

A couple of weeks ago I applied to adopt a dog from this rescue. Within a week I was told I was approved, in fact I spoke to two different people who told me this. Almost a week later, 3 days before I was supposed to drive down to CT (from ME) to get the dog, I am told I'm not approved because my current dog isn't fixed. When my husband confronted the volunteer about it, she admitted to having changed her mind because of that. Mind you, this is after I wrote up an email voicing my concerns with the lack of communication and information regarding the adoption. This rescue obviously does not have their stuff together, and has no problem discriminating against people. I would not recommend trying to adopt through them. It's beyond unprofessional what we just went through, not to mention emotionally trying. The volunteer also refused to take responsibility for the situation, we did not get one apology. Be warned- you may sit around for a week thinking you have a new family member just to possibly have them change their mind last minute. read more

I'm sure that they have good dogs, but there's something shady about this group. They list themselves on adoptapet.com as having pets in Maine, but the closest they come is Enfield, CT. They are not registered in Maine and don't transport to Maine or Massachusetts presumably to avoid the 2 day quarantine law that both states have. Furthermore, their charge is at least $200 more than local shelters who are registered and import pets here legally. Where does the extra $200 go? I couldn't tell from looking at their 990. In our case, we were all set to adopt a dog, but hesitated to drive 7 hours one way to Enfield, CT. At first they offered to contact someone else in Maine who was adopting a dog to pick him up, a day later they told us that he had been adopted by someone else. We're going to stick with our local shelters and rescue groups. read more

Zero stars would be appropriate! Dealing with candace was a struggle from the beginning. Getting to what the process is to adopt a dog was like pulling teeth. Finally she realized she hadn't even sent me the application yet. In the meantime I had oral surgery and there was 2 day delay in getting the application back. She then tells me the dog is being adopted by its foster family and offers me another dog lol. Very upset I tell her that's poor practice since the wheels were already in motion. Her reply was...."well tim good luck getting a dog from any other rescues....." is this a threat? Whatever! Well take our money and go elsewhere. read more

I would not recommend this rescue, they may be a great company but I was not going to find out if they were a scam. I was approved for a puppy, they called my references and then we discussed how I was to get the puppy. Since they were in TN and I am in VA, I was to meet them at 11 pm in Staunton Va (2.5 hours from me) but was never told where like it was a secret. After getting excited I was told that I had to pay the 575.00 up front. What??? I am going to meet you at 11pm at a non disclosed location and pay up front for a puppy that I have never met. I emailed her and asked if I could do a deposit, was not comfortable paying the entire amount up front. I did not get a response, and the next morning I emailed her again and she said " She was adopted out last night, sorry" . Never gave me a chance to discuss the payment further. I then seen the same puppy advertised with a different name. SCAM !!!!! read more

I have had a similar experience to many others. Their customer service and their policies are not appropriate. Very little information is offered about your prospective pet and you must pay in advance. I was requested to meet at an undisclosed location at 11 pm to adopt my dog sight unseen and after I already paid. I asked basic questions to help gain trust in their adoption process and was accused of attacking Candace and Penny's characters. I had multiple friends read over my email correspondences and everyone agreed that my questions were reasonable and that this organization is at least worth second guessing adopting a dog from. read more

I never got a dog from here. I inquired about a dog by the name LeBron via email from an online website, www.adoptapet.com. I immediately sent an email and the same day spoke with a foster mom. As I went through the process I noticed their cost for adoption was on average $150 more than any other adoption agency offering the same health screens, shot, etc. Not too mention I would not be able to see the dog prior to payment and being transported to the area, despite being advertised in my area. Needless to say conversations went well until I questioned the price. Emails became non-customer service friendly. At that time I stopped my correspondence. About a week later I noticed the exact same profile, pics, summary, contact info, etc. were on the same website BUT the dog name has now changed to Bronco.
