Luckily, my family still lives in the area, so we make it a point to visit whenever we're in town and we are never disappointed. The food was typical pub fare. I enjoyed the spicy pork tacos and upgraded to the special fries. Our server was attentive and we were pleased to hear they have a dedicated gluten free fryer and plenty of GF options.. Everyone enjoyed the beer and ciders. We sat at a picnic table on the deck under a large umbrella. Great views of both the river and the train bridge! What a great dining experience. Quite a bit of food to chose from, but I selected their Trail Mix Salad because why not it sounds amazing. For my protein I selected tofu and OMG cooked to perfection. All of the ingredients worked well together so that no one part dominated the the flavor it worked well. It was a nice sized portion and fairly priced at $14 + $4 for the tofu (that IMO was a bit much for the amount of tofu added but it was so delish). Being at a brewery of course I was going to taste some beer $14 I did a flight off five. I would say their beers are above average. $14 is on the high end of what I've paid elsewhere but for here Is be willing to pay $14 again because of the quality. The staff, Langston is very knowledgeable on their beers and did a fantastic job of checking how my dining experience was going. Met out-of-town friends here. We got there before our friends and while we waited the hostess worked with us on getting a seat on the upstairs patio. The beer was great, the patio, over looking the river, was lovely as usual, the waitress was great, and we had a great time with our friends. However, the food at C.E. has significantly gone down in quality. Years ago (the last time we ate here) their bbq, sous vide eggs, pickles, etc. were exceptional. Our food this time around was good, but C.E. Is no longer one of the best restaurants around. Four years ago we were visiting good friends and they recommended the ( Cooked Ewe Brewery) so when we returned to South Bend, we recommended the Crooked Ewe to some other good friends. We walked in on a Wednesday at 12:00 noon. We sat down, And I was raving about " The Brisket "and other delicious smoked items that we had experienced. We were then informed that they were out of all their Signature smoked meats, including the Brisket. The Only item that was left were the ( Tacos) and a Rice noodle salad. the Tacos were by far the WORST Taco we had ever tasted. the Tacos were so bad, we all stopped eating and were so disgusted . The waiter was non descriptive and she could of cared less that they were out of most dishes and that the tacos were horrid. Then the $91.00 bill came! Ouch. The Crooked Ewe was a delightful establishment! So spunky and a fun environment right here in South Bend! We found it to be the best location for a girls dinner! You'd think that a combination of bbq carrot hummus, cilantro, queso fresco, szechuan-dusted chickpea salad, marinated egg, and quinoa tabbouleh wouldn't work, but damn, it does. Kudos to the creative mind(s) behind this dish! My only critique of the dish is that the addition of the buttery sourdough eats on the greasy side. I would have preferred less butter or a pita. Not only does Crooked Ewe brew their own beer (which some have been giving awesome awards!!), but they also serve up some great food. Beer was fire, and so was the food. But I have to take a second to shout out to the awesome service--people were friendly and super helpful--AND the great ambiance of the space. 4 stars for the service but I was pretty underwhelmed with the food. They don't have a huge menu. The establishment itself is clean. They have a nice outside seating area with heaters & a nice view. We started with the elote hush puppies. They were different; I liked them. I was excited to try the brisket but it was just ok. A little on the dry side. The sauce they served with it was heavily flavored with paprika. (Is my tongue red?) I wish I would have ordered the brisket melt, but after the waitress said she doesn't like it (cause she doesn't like brisket) I changed my mind. (Absolutely my fault). They no longer offer what's called a smoke plate, as I saw in other reviews. Instead you are ordering a la carte. The kimchi fried rice was seasoned well and pretty good. My husband has them lemongrass chicken sandwich with fries, which he enjoyed. I had a glass of Vinho Verde; it's reminds me of a Riesling. It was nice. My husband had the tart cherry cider.
