The Crooked Ewe was a delightful establishment! So spunky and a fun environment right here in South Bend! We found it to be the best location for a girls dinner! We sat on their beautiful patio with a perfect view of the St. Joseph River- what a treat! There are opportunities to sit in so many places it felt a bit like a maze in the best way- so much to see! And with all of these places to sit, on a lovely Friday night- this place was poppin'! So we'd likely recommend a reservation if you think of it, but I'm certain the wonderful staff would be able to fit you in as they can! We waited a moment for our food, but with our large group, we were happy to do so as the food was worth the wait! Many of our group got OG Burgers while others opted for chicken wings and brisket sandwiches, or even tacos! They really had it all! The food had a bit of a kick with the spice, but as someone with not a high spice tolerance, it was not too much at all! I didn't get a chance to snap a pic of our dishes because we just scarfed them down- Ha! The service was attentive, but also really independent and relaxed! Crooked Ewe opened shortly after I graduated from college and moved out of the area. Luckily, my family still lives in the area, so we make it a point to visit whenever we're in town and we are never disappointed. The choice of beer is always spot on and the food and service are always a hit. The poutine is a solid choice to share. The pastrami is delicious. But the one that I really enjoyed recently was the bibimbap with brisket. It can get a little crowded, but that just says that it's a good place to meet up and get some good food. read more

What a great dining experience. Quite a bit of food to chose from, but I selected their Trail Mix Salad because why not it sounds amazing. For my protein I selected tofu and OMG cooked to perfection. All of the ingredients worked well together so that no one part dominated the the flavor it worked well. It was a nice sized portion and fairly priced at $14 + $4 for the tofu (that IMO was a bit much for the amount of tofu added but it was so delish). Being at a brewery of course I was going to taste some beer $14 I did a flight off five. I would say their beers are above average. $14 is on the high end of what I've paid elsewhere but for here Is be willing to pay $14 again because of the quality. The staff, Langston is very knowledgeable on their beers and did a fantastic job of checking how my dining experience was going. Came here for dinner. From out of town visiting customers. This hit all the right notes for the menu. We have a vegan and someone who loves beer. So here we are. Easy to find. Kinda small parking lot if it's a busy night. They sat us right away. It was a cold and rainy night so the dining area seemed kinda dark. Not sure if that is because it was dark out or if the light is better during the day. Dining area is big. Large bar. Menu is a QR code on the table. I do like a hard copy menu. Server was nice. She was very efficient and on top of us all night. We asked for an appetizer recommendation. The vegan hush puppies were it. Honestly I didn't like them. I am not a fan of vegan cheese. But the regular hush puppies were ok. Ordered the pastrami. My associate ordered the tacos off the servers recommendation and my vegan associate got the bibbibip bowl. I enjoyed my sandwich. I only ate half. Again I got fries that were little and end pieces. I can say that cuz we got another side of fries and those were long and good. Anyway, food was decent. Now the Beer. I actually got the cider. It was a tart cherry. Not bad. Everyone tried a different beer and generally it was a good review. This looks like a decent place to hang out. I had the most wild brunch dish of my life at Crooked Ewe: breakfast hummus. You'd think that a combination of bbq carrot hummus, cilantro, queso fresco, szechuan-dusted chickpea salad, marinated egg, and quinoa tabbouleh wouldn't work, but damn, it does. Kudos to the creative mind(s) behind this dish! My only critique of the dish is that the addition of the buttery sourdough eats on the greasy side. I would have preferred less butter or a pita. Also, the hop water gets an A for effort, and it wasn't for me with the lack of bubbles. I'm coming back for the smoked jackfruit during patio weather! The brisket is fantastic as well and is complemented by their signature sauce. This is a great brewery! The staff is very knowledgeable about food allergies, especially those who work behind the bar. All beers are gluten reduced based on an enzyme that they add to the beer. All food options have a gluten free alternative except the poutine fries. read more

When I went to South Bend, I wasn't expecting such a cool brewery space to visit! Not only does Crooked Ewe brew their own beer (which some have been giving awesome awards!!), but they also serve up some great food. From other reviews and after talking with a friend, I learned the good menu is always changing, which means you're always going to be surprised with some new dishes! Beer was fire, and so was the food. But I have to take a second to shout out to the awesome service--people were friendly and super helpful--AND the great ambiance of the space. My friend and I sat outside on their porch (it was a perfect day in July!), and we were overlooking the river while chatting, drinking those beers, and nibbling on our food. Honestly, this hit all the right notes for a great visit to SB, and I really can't wait to check this place out again next time I'm in town! read more

On our way home looking for gluten free options and the crooked ewe had good reviews so we stopped in and orders the smoked brisket (yes gluten free bread!) and the tacos. 4 stars for the service but I was pretty underwhelmed with the food. They don't have a huge menu. The establishment itself is clean. They have a nice outside seating area with heaters & a nice view. We started with the elote hush puppies. They were different; I liked them. I was excited to try the brisket but it was just ok. A little on the dry side. The sauce they served with it was heavily flavored with paprika. (Is my tongue red?) I wish I would have ordered the brisket melt, but after the waitress said she doesn't like it (cause she doesn't like brisket) I changed my mind. (Absolutely my fault). They no longer offer what's called a smoke plate, as I saw in other reviews. Instead you are ordering a la carte. The kimchi fried rice was seasoned well and pretty good. My husband has them lemongrass chicken sandwich with fries, which he enjoyed. I had a glass of Vinho Verde; it's reminds me of a Riesling. It was nice. My husband had the tart cherry cider. Can't feed the location of this brewery. It's right off the water and at times you can see the rowing team out there. Pretty cool atmosphere. There is an upstairs and downstairs they both oversee the water. I did enjoy some of the beers that they had, but overall wasn't too impressed with their whole variety of beers. Some of them just didn't taste so great they did have a wine slushy, which tasted pretty good. Overall I will definitely come back to this place because of the location and there are some beverages that are OK but some of them work pretty good. I definitely want to come back and try their food as most of the things that I saw on peoples plates looked really really good so next time I will sure spend a little bit longer here. read more

An Awesome place to pass the time and get some good beer paired with some random eats as well. It's a little bit nicer than your average bar food, with a more upscale feel. This is a gastro brewery with indoor and outdoor dining with some scenic views. They have a good size menu of beers which can be locally found, and their menu sometimes changes so if you're a local, you can steadily find something new. The first time stopping by there was a bit of a wait so instead of standing around we ventured outside and did a quick little walk to see the greenery with beer in hand. We've sat at the bar and tables on different occasions, too cold for the outside, but you can still view some of the outside from the windows. The staff were friendly and fast and threw out some popular recommendations, which I love. The food was pretty good, hot, and had a lot of flavor, a nice variety of different things to consume. Too hungry to take pictures before diving in, but the food was delicious! Started with the pork rinds and only got better from there! The rinds were season wonderfully with a little kick but cooked fresh along with a pepperdew dip that complemented them well. Split the regular burger and no complaints here. The special sauce didn't jump out at you but wasn't bland either. Burger was good well done and smashed. I'm not into fries but these had enough salt to tempt me and you got a healthy serving. My son entertained the brisket smelt and thumbs up! Brisket was smoky but not killer smoke and the sauce, mmmm! He loved the Texas toast! Lastly I had the rice noodle salad and definitely would order that again. Plenty of edamame and nuts with a lovely vinaigrette that actually covered all of it (not dry at all). It's a big bowl so be hungry if you order it. Oh yeah, since it s a brewery, we ordered the hammerhead hazy and the scotch butcher IPA and you can't go wrong with these either! Crooked Ewe has an amazing location. Overlooking the river right next to the train bridge you are in for some fantastic views. Beer wise they are OK not my favorite but definitely have some decent offerings. The standouts are usually their oatmeal, stout and cream ale although on this last visit, I found the mail to be much hoppier and more bitter than I remember. Service is friendly and attentive. Their menu seems overly complicated and overly expensive to be really honest. At our last visit, I opted for the smoked meats. They were out of pastrami so I went with my second choice brisket and a hot link with a side of jalapeño cheese grits. The hot link was good definitely the smallest hotlink I've ever seen. The brisket was tough. It had a few tender pieces, but was pretty dried out for the most part. The star of the show was the grits. Creamy perfectly cooked with just the right amount of heat. I would have returned all the meat just to get another couple bowls of grits. My husband enjoyed his sandwich, but said the fries were just OK. He went for the beef fat fries, but they were not super crisp or hot. Will definitely visit again, but we may skip the food next time. read more

The interior was so cool and the dark mood set the tone nicely. It felt like a dreamy atmosphere that only the a few people know about. I ordered the mushroom melt and switched the vegan cheese with regular cheese. It was delicious. The mushrooms were the star of the show and I love mushrooms so this was a hit! I swapped the sides for their roasted veggies. I got asparagus and carrots and I normally dislike roasted carrots but these were delicious. The melt was a bit messy to hold and a tad too greasy for my liking but it was definitely still delicious. Would order again. 8/10 We also got the kimchi fried rice. DO NOT GET IT. I know what kimchi fried rice is supposed to be and this was NOT IT. They put cilantro... CILANTRO!!!! That was an immediate miss for any fried rice. 0/10 The special dessert for the night was some corn cake with jalapeño-peach jam with toasted marshmallow topping. It was okay. I wouldn't get it again. The jam was too sweet. The cornbread was way too dry. The marshmallow was the only good thing because how can you mess up marshmallows? Wouldn't recommend this one. 3/10 Our server was so sweet. She wasn't rushing us or talking too much to disturb us. She was very wholesome and welcoming! Overall, 7/10 experience. read more
