We were in the area and wanted to find a brewery that served food and we stumbled upon South Bend Brew Works. Parking was easy to spot and had plenty to pick. The inside was broken into two halves, bar side and dining and when we went it was seat yourself. Our waitress was incredible. She was friendly and attentive and made for a great visit. I wasn't in the beer mood today, so I had the Pink Pony Club, which was essentially a transfusion, which was great. I was really hoping to love my grilled cheese, base on the description and it being a best seller but I was really underwhelmed. I think I've made cheesier grilled cheese at my own kitchen. Drove two hours to get to South Bend, and specifically chose this place based on menu & pics. Arrived today (Friday) at 11:30 am, only to find a Closed sign. Apparently they feel people don't eat lunch before noon. Two other people started to walk in before also realizing they were closed until noon. Since nobody has time to sit in a parking lot for half an hour, that's four meals they're pushing to other places. Not a very good business model. read more

Swung by this brewery on a road trip with some friends and can I say, it was quite the experience. Food was subpar and the meat in the nachos was dry and not flavorful. I did like the dill potato salad, however, and my friend and I agreed it was surprisingly the best thing we tasted that evening. There was karaoke happening at the time we stopped by for dinner and we were requested multiple times to participate while we were in the middle of dining. Overall, thankful to have had this dining option while on the road but it isn't a spot I would go out of my way to recommend to others. read more

Great brewery in downtown south bend. We went on a Thursday afternoon so not busy at all. I had the gin lavender lemonade. It was really refreshing on a hot day. We had the pretzel with cheese sauce and the hummus with bread and veggies. The pretzel was buttery and thick and came out piping hot. Super great snack and the cheese sauce was yummy too. The hummus was a Sun dried tomato hummus which was the perfect amount for the bread and veggies. The bread was good but didn't have a lot of flavor. The veggies were fresh and delicious. The hummus was also good but could have had a more smooth texture. The whole dish could've had some more salt and some oil. We were able to sample some of their cinnamon rolls for brunch which were very delicious. Definitely put them on the menu! Great service and nice decor. Highly recommend! read more

Absolutely horrific experience. Came with a large group. We were told at 2:45 pm that lunch is served at 3:30. We decided to wait. Wait and wait and wait. They took our order at 3:30 pm. We left at 4:30 pm with NO FOOD SERVED, a VERY RUDE OWNER explaining how she was a small business and we were the next check after AN HOUR OF WAITING AFTER ORDERING, they were OUT OF MEATBALLS AN HOUR AFTER ORDERING the meatball sandwich and we decided to leave since we were starving at this point. We went to a separate establishment instead, were served food within 20 minutes and were on our way. The bad: the brisket sandwich, the brisket was ok. What there was if it, But was so small and the bread, wheat? Huh? And almost no brisket. And they charged like $14. Same as the pizza which was 3x the size. Back to the drawing board. And the service, started out ok, but when we said something about the sandwich they developed a case of avoidance. Deuces. Came for the local brews, stayed for the soft pretzel with cheese and ranch, will return for the Buffalo cauliflower wrap! Wow this is such a cool place downtown! With indoor and outdoor seating in an open air environment it's a fun place for all ages - even kiddos! We ordered a few flights, the pretzel with house-made habanero cheese (not spicy at all!) and house-made ranch, the Buffalo cauliflower wrap, tacos, and brisket sandwich and all of it was amazing! This is a great little brewery in the downtown area next to the old State Theatre. The South Bend Brew Werks (SBBW) has a nice outside sidewalk patio with a couple bike racks out front. We did a bike ride into downtown, locked up our bikes and sat down for lunch. Caitlin was our server and she was lively, fun and knew the overall menu quite well. When she mentioned the day's special, which was the mushroom crunch wrap, I was sold. It was a completely homemade vegan burger that included spinach inside the wrap and a tasty special sauce. It came with homemade vegan potato salad that was spiced with a perfect little kick! My friend had the Spicy Brisketwich which was their house brisket with habanero cheddar cheese, provolone and roasted jalapeños on toasted sourdough bread. Her side was the house hummus (also vegan) with carrots and celery, which was the chef's creation with seasonal ingredients. We shared each other's choices and loved everything we ate. We were both amazed how great the vegan items tasted, especially the mushroom crunch wrap. Definitely a fun and tasty brewery in downtown South Bend! Love the industrial steam punk feel to the place also the combination of both indoor and outdoor feel . OMG, this place blew me away! My husband and I originally intended to dine at a riverfront restaurant we had been to before. However, while walking around downtown South Bend, we saw signs for Restaurant Week with menu deals for $11, $22 and $33. I looked it up online and found two local (non-chain) restaurants with good deals and yummy sounding vegetarian and vegan options. It was a tough choice, but we decided to try South Bend Brew Werks because they had the better deal, and my husband could try some locally made beer. Plus, the microbreweries always seem to have good food. This place exceeded my expectations! So, for $22 we EACH got an appetizer or soup, entree, and dessert! They had a Cacao beer on special, so my husband tried that. It's a Chocolate Milk Porter, which was right in my wheelhouse before discovering my gluten sensitivity and giving up beer. I took a sip out of curiosity, and it was delicious! I decided it was worth it to take a gluten pill and drink more of the tasty brew. OK, back to the food... We shared the Jalapeño Popper Dip, which was a nicely spicy roasted jalapeño cheese dip served with warm and hearty tortilla chips (homemade, maybe?) Very good! We also shared the Gazpacho soup, which was described as "roasted peaches, deglazed with tequila, served cold". It was well blended, not chunky like I expected, and I can't say I tasted peaches, but it was light and refreshing, like a little cup of heaven. My husband got the Dill Chicken Salad Sandwich, which he said was really good. I tried the Buffalo Cauliflower Wrap (with roasted cauliflower in a Buffalo sauce, mixed greens, red onions, and vegan ranch sauce). It was delicious and also worth taking a gluten pill. They were out of two dessert options (a frozen yogurt and cheesecake bites), but we had already both decided on the gluten-free Peanut Butter Cookie anyway, so that worked out perfectly. (We don't generally eat dessert, plus we figured we would already be full, and cookies are easily transported for later enjoyment.) Wow! The cookies were huge, warm, thick, rich and moist! Decadent and delicious! You would never guess that they were gluten free. And they are just as good the next day (I can verify as I write this *munch, munch*). We were happy to sit outside in the cute patio area, though the interior also had a nice vibe. Our server was very friendly and helpful. Color us impressed with this place! Southbend is one of our favorite stops as we pass between NY and Minnesota. Generally we arrive, exhausted from driving and ready to crash in our hotel. This time, we arrived thirsty and in deep need of a beer. While we found other brewery options around town, we liked the idea of South Bend Brew Works, right down town. Fantastic space. Very approachable and comfortable. Obviously, others also liked it, while not "crowded" but it was busy. We sat at the bar and ordered food and a flight to share. Talking with the bar tender, we learned that she was the assistant brewer! So we got to have beer snob talk. End the end we had two flights and a few 5oz tastings, allowing us to taste everything on tap. I am comfortable saying that every single beer we tasted was very good. The only "critical" feedback is so petty, that I hesitate saying it, but, since every review should include a critical comment I am going to say it; the Hawaiian Stout needed more coconut flavor. It was a good stout, but I found the name misleading. You can be certain we will be back, the next time we are 8 hours into a journey and need a good break. read more

I'm pretty sure they all work with the local community, so by dining here you are helping out South Bend. The food is delicious. My shells & cheese had the perfect ratio of cheese to noodle that lets it all clump together as you put your fork in. Each bite had just the right amount of pulled pork to accentuate the flavor. My only qualm with this restaurant is that the water is self-serve. They have a jug and you just grab a glass and fill it up. I drink a lot of water whenever I eat, so it ended up being a lot of back and forth during my meal. read more

Rave reviews fir SBBW! We had a great evening there. We are driving across country and stopped for the night in South Bend. We were tired and hungry but didn't want a chain restaurant. In fact, beer was in order. So we located this brewery, and based on the reviews, we headed downtown. It did not disappoint. We each ordered a flight and both my husband and I chose the Illuminator, a wheat beer. It was crisp with a wonderful finish. All of the beers were great but this was our favorite. Then the food ! We ordered flatbread. My husband ordered the Pepperoni and I had the BBQ pork. It was the best flatbread we've ever ordered. Great bread, lots of hot melted cheese, toppings, and dips. We were so pleased. If that wasn't enough, we had the perkiest, friendliest waitress, Caitlin. She made the evening perfect. Let me start by saying, I'm 47yo. Though young at heart, I may be on the cusp of this place being out of my comfort zone. It's really small, which is fine. It's a dive, also fine as I like divey places. But after we walked in, sat ourselves, and got a menu, it was clear to me this was a hipster, circle-Goddess, resist-The-Man, kind of place...again, that's fantastic because the locals who were there (21-25ish yo) loved it. Vegetarian and vegan options are abundant, and all the menu items have, at least, small deviations from standard to make them their own. So if you want a burger and fries, you will NOT find them here. I had the JUST THE MAC, because it was the most standard thing I saw, and it was pretty good. A little on the dry side, but most bake macs are. I'm not complaining because it was priced fairly. Hubs had a spicy brisket sandwich, and I had a bite, and wished I'd ordered that! After the first Cider beer, I started to feel more at home, and after the second Cider I was fine. We played a game of Sorry from the wall of games, then ABBAs Dancing Queen come on, and I was ready to stay for another drink. All-in-all, I wasn't disappointed. The staff was friendly, and beautifully decorated in colorful tattoos, and cotton-candy-colored hair, and they give back to the community, and have live music some nights. Recommended on yelp as well as my local hotel so what can I say my colleague and I ended up here for dinner this evening. Walked in was quickly greeted by the bartender and was given table options. This is a small local establishment with minimal seating. There were two larger groups here with 6 to 8 people at each setting. We were able to select a table in the corner however was still a little crowded in my opinion. I thought it was pretty busy for a Monday evening but of course I have nothing to compare it to. Great beer selection, appetizers and other menu items to pick from. My colleague ordered the spicy brisket cheesy sandwich and I had a pulled pork flatbread. Both of these were really good. Service was a little slow, however the bartender was taking care of the whole place by himself. Does equate it to approximately 10 tables plus the single person sitting at the bar. No other chairs were out at the bar but one. Overall a very good experience. I would highly recommend. The fresh made pretzel with dipping cheese was one of the best I've ever had. I do a fair amount of traveling, and this was one of the best. I would definitely come back. Only reason for the four stars versus five, was the crowded seating as I thought they may be able to do better given what's going on today. Also they had space heaters scattered around since it was chilly inside the place. And the slow service. I don't blame the bartender, however if it's going to be that busy they should have at least one more person in there to take care of the tables and make sure The guests are taken care of without waiting. The food was soooo good. It was a super cold night and their grilled cheese was just as good as described. We also had the pretzel with both the cheese and the pesto dips, so perfect spicy and mild flavors. We had great service. Food came out pretty quick and they were very attentive. Additionally they had a solo guitarist playing and he was really good, and it wasn't too loud which aloud for conversation too. Food was okay but my two friends had stomach cramps and were sick afterwards. We arrived around 8:20 and it took until almost 9:40 to get our food. We believe the server forgot to put our order in until we complained. Then we're told she put the order in at 9:15 when we had ordered 30 minutes prior. All tables including ones that arrived after us were served before we were. They made excuses when we complained and offered to take a beverage off the bill but left mine on. Will not return or recommend. However, my husband enjoyed the Old Fashioned so maybe we can get the recipe. BTW, "pub chips" are ruffles potato chips. read more

Cool brewery right in downtown South Bend. We stopped for drinks and food on our way from Cle-Chi. For beer I got the Hideaway Hooch and Stargazer, both very good. For food I got an app called dirty hummus, which is mainly hummus, but also mixes in queso and black bean dip. It actually worked quite well, that was the first time I'd ever seen that on a menu. They didn't have cans to go (that I could see) but they do fill crowlers. They also do a cool thing where for every beer you buy, you get 50 cents to donate to one of 3 local charities. I know breweries are often charitable, but that was definitely a unique twist on donating. Solid place overall, would recommend for sure. read more

I had been waiting awhile now to give brew werks a try and really wanted to like it. However, I was extremely disappointed with the experience overall. The place is pretty small, but cozy. Had a decent ambience. We sat down at the bar and were disappointed by the lack of beer selection even though it is a brew pub. It was restaurant week, so we had some entrees from their special menu. Can't say much about their regular menu, but the portions were extremely small. The squash soup was too sweet. The potato soup was sour and unappealing. Sloppy Joe tasted great but the portion was TINY. There was barely any meat and all bun. Flatbread was extremely disappointing. The spinach and tomato weren't even baked in. It was lukewarm and boring. The brownie was COLD and came straight out of the fridge (we watched our waitress bring it out). The cookie was mediocre at best. Worst of all was the service. Our waitress was inattentive. Our food came out onto the bar and sat there for a good 10 minutes before she brought them over to us. The place is obviously understaffed. The decor is warm and inviting, utilizing recycled and repurposed items filled with South Bend history, showcasing local artists and of course, great l food and beer! We were excited to break in our handcrafted mugs and thoroughly enjoyed the beers we tried - the IPA 001 and Saison were probably our favorites of the evening. We tried the "My Favorite", a unique twist on mac & cheese, featuring housemade brew noodles. My husband and I were sharing and our bartender warned us that the portion sizes are "normal" so it may not be enough to share.
