I ordered the Kung Pao lunch special which comes with a choice of egg roll or soup, and white or vegetable friend rice. I chose the wonton soup and fried rice, and I ordered an egg roll as well. The egg roll came out quickly, and the lunch special was served right when I finished that. The food was good and the dish was spicy (Kung Pao is supposed to be spicy but it never is-- not for me) and the service was polite. When the check came it was accompanied by a plate with two slices of orange and a fortune cookie. The only thing I didn't like about the visit was that there was an advertisement for a big commercial law firm on the back of the fortune slip and the "lucky number" was the phone number. I thought that was tacky. I walked out at 1:15pm. Great, quick lunch.

And a lunch menu. Wow! I just gave my receipt another look and the people are nicer than I thought. I thought they were pleasant, friendly, happy we were there, concerned that we would enjoy our visit. The lunch menu offerings were each $10.95 and included eggroll OR soup, and white or vegetable fried rice. Daughter ordered the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce with eggroll and white rice, plus an appetizer order of steamed dumplings. I ordered Eggplant with Pork in Garlic sauce with eggroll and white rice, plus a small bowl of Hot and Sour Soup. The soup on the appetizer menu was $3.95. My receipt shows the server put the soup as my lunch choice and charged $2.95 for the eggroll. She never said a word, didn't point out that I could save a dollar by switching the sides around. So the people are all I thought plus kind and conscientious. Marvelous. I was delighted with everything I ate. The entree was enough for two, so supper came home with me. The eggroll was fresh and crisp and non-greasy, seemed homemade. Excellent. The eggplant was perfectly prepared and cooked, as was the pork. Delicious. The hot and sour soup was easily one of the best I've had, and I'm always looking for a great hot and sour soup. Coming from downtown Buffalo, we'd been in Williamsville because I had an appointment on Essjay Rd. Afterward, we looked for a place to have lunch before shopping. Finding Golden Hill at 4001 Sheridan Dr. in Amherst was pure serendipity. You can bet, though, that I will visit again after next appointment.

I only regret not finding this place sooner. The food is amazing. Not a single complaint with the food. Everything was perfect. My favorite is the Stir-Fried Cabbage w. Shrimp in Hot Pot (干锅高丽菜/干锅包菜）and the Cumin Beef (孜然牛). Something I'll absolutely order again next time. The Fried Yellow Croaker in Hot Sauce (干烧黄鱼) is also great. And that's coming from a guy who doesn't like fish. My only complaint is that they were slow to make our food. I get it's busy, but how are the other tables that came after us getting their food first? They have their table full with multiple dishes but I have yet to get one dish. The interior is simple, with lots of photos of the dishes and their names on the walls, which helps with ordering. Some things to note are that you'll get a small portion of fried peanuts and kimchi while you wait, you'll also be served free unlimited tea, and that the rice doesn't come with the entrees and are extra. They also offer a 10 or 15% discount if you pay in cash.

And no, it's not like any typical Chinese takeout place, and the fact that we drive 30min each way to eat there almost every chance we get shows just how much we love it. We always order enough food for 6-8 people and then take the rest home and eat them throughout the week. They have a huge menu and we continue to try one new dish every time we go. I don't have pics of everything we've ever ordered but our favorite items are: 1. sweet and sour pork - we always always always order this no matter what, and sometimes we get another order to go. It's nothing like the ones you get from other Chinese places. The coating is super crispy, and maintains its crispiness even after microwaving. The sauce is tangy with a hint of sweetness and not all thick/gooey and sugary like other places. I don't even like sweet and sour pork as a dish but I absolutely love and crave this all the time. 2. As for soups, we usually go for the Westlake beef soup. It's seasoned ground beef with tofu in a delicious egg drop like broth. It has a lot of cilantro so if you're not a fan of cilantro you won't like this. The wonton soup is very good too but it has seaweed in it for those who might not be a fan. I think you can probably ask for it without the seaweed though. 3. Scallion pancake stuffed with pork, beef, or lamb. All the meats are a little spicy and all are delicious, but our favorite is the pork. There's this homemade kimchi inside and it just makes it extra delicious. 4. Green beans and minced pork - it's my personal favorite vegetable dish. They did make this other dish that has bean sprouts with sliced pork but they took it off their menu a couple of months ago because not enough people order it :((( 5. All the dumplings. They're all homemade and I love them because the dough is not super thick like most other places. There's a good dough to filling ratio and that's one of the key characteristics of a good dumpling. We usually ask them to be pan fried (hubby prefers them that way) which takes extra long to do and costs extra, but is worth it if you like more of a potsticker style dumpling. Also, the wontons in spicy sauce is very tasty too - that's a dish we typically order as well. 6. We usually get some kind of beef dish. The ones I remember liking are the beef with scallions and onions, the black pepper beef, and the spicy shredded beef. I was ecstatic to see that I can order from China Taste on Uber eats. It usually takes 1hr to get it delivered but we live 30min away so that's expected. All the food are usually delivered still hot, and if not - they reheat very well, so no complaints here!
