In 1873, B.J. Chambers, a prominent Cleburne settler, donated one acre of land for the reburial of bodies. In 1876, five more acres were donated by Jeremiah Easterwood and Chambers donated another 10 acres. In 1894, C.Y. and Ann Kouns donated another tract of land for the cemetery to establish a Confederate Park for use by the Pat Cleburne Camp No. 88, United Confederate Veterans and their descendants. In 1880, the Cemetery Association purchased an additional 20 acres from R.J. Chambers to make the cemetery 36 acres. Some 12-14,000 bodies were buried in Memorial Cemetery between 1876 and the 1940s. The Confederate Park arch is still there with a historical marker. According to the city records, some 278 Confederate soldiers and 7 Union soldiers are buried in the cemetery. More than 20,000 people are interred in this cemetery and there are many unidentified graves. The cemetery is still in use today. I have tried reversing the numbers and have driven and walked the cemetery many times but cannot locate it. Have the Block numbers been changed? I have a picture of the marker, but I still have been unable to locate it. I wonder if his parents are buried there as well, but there is no information on them on Findagrave.com. My mother, grandparents and 2 sets of great grandparents are buried in another plot in this cemetery and I would like to locate the others. My grandmother used to tell us about when she was a little girl and she would run around that cemetery kissing the angels and the lambs on the babies graves. She was born in 1900 in Cleburne, so those would be very old graves.

In conformity with State Cemetery Laws, a percentage of each lot sale is deposited in an irrevocable trust fund which provides upkeep of each lot forever. Families will never be asked to pay any dues or assessments for upkeep. The cemetery did appear in good condition with a very presentable entrance gate. The headstones and property were well maintained. I noticed the "Lightfoot Cemetery" off to one side that was interesting. Is this a private family cemetery that simply had the Green Acres grow adjacent to it? Still, I appreciated the family names here that predated the Green Acres formation. I was a bit taken aback when a hearse arrived with two gentlemen who said they worked for a funeral home came to the door; then they quickly told they do pick ups for Lone Star. They were kind, polite and considerate. After I was notified, I drove to their facility to pick up my husbands ashes, and received the death certificates. They had also notified Social Security about the change in status, and I received SSA without any change in schedule. I highly recommend this company. I was able to make all the arrangements over the internet and pay with a credit card.

All I did was forward the previous emails to them and they finally got it. They dragged out the process so I have to wait 10-14 days longer than I should have to get the death certificates. They didn't guarantee a specific date, but their estimate of 7-10 days turned into two weeks. When I went to pick up my wife's ashes she was just in a paper bag on the floor with many others. Watching her haphazardly search through the bags on the floor was horrifying. I would not recommend their service to anyone.
