They have gear for everyone, except the hardcore powerlifter (meaning no 100 lb plates, jack racks, platforms, bar jack for deadlift loading, competition bench, or chalk stand.) They DO have squat racks, Smith machines, flat and incline benches, a range of dumbbells up to 140 lbs, and an array of basic HammerStrength machines. The bonus for me is that they have FreeMotion machines, which are the bomb for plane-and-range-of-motion training. They've also got assorted tubing, medicine and stability balls, and Bosus. In case someone from DAC reads this, it would be super-cool if you could install a TRX rack or two. Approximately half the work-out space is devoted to cardio machines, and there's an upstairs where classes are held. I always thought DAC was great for families. It's located at Cox Park where the baseball and soccer fields are. So, it's convenient if the family is involved in those activities as well. However, they do not have a pool; nor do they have a sauna, steam or whirlpool. No big deal for me, but some people demand those things.

After participating in 3 other crossfit boxes in Houston and in Memphis, I can say that the people working out at Crossfit Triad were some of the nicest people I have found in the crossfit environment. I have rarely had a problem with a Crossfit coach in my 3 years of crossfitting being rude or unwelcoming, but it has always been the people participating have always presented a challenge. There is always an intimidation factor. But the folks at Triad have seriously put together some of the nicest of people. If you are a first timer, or someone who has done Crossfit before but found it intimidating because of the people in the classes, Triad is a great place to go!! People are so great and encouraging! Coming back after an injury (this time around) has been challenging, but the people at Triad have made the transition pretty simple.

Unluckily, French had somehow messed up my membership, so EMAC didn't let me workout there but let my wife (we were only a family plan at French). I didn't understand it, but I have my theories about what French was doing. I didn't feel EMAC handled it well, but it's not their fault. So I tried EMAC, and really enjoyed it, so did my wife. It's a little smaller than French Riviera and LA Fitness, has less equipment than them, but definitely has the essential equipment you would need for your workouts. Everything from rowing, to oly lifts, to traditional weightlifting, to green space for crossfit or HIIT workouts. They even have classes that are included in the membership. And it's never too busy to find space or equipment to use. They weren't able to give me the same discount French Riviera did, so we are basically paying twice as much for this gym, but hey, that's life. I'd definitely recommend this gym to anyone in the area.

I actually congratulated that individual on his accomplishment, but I also commented that maybe we would see more classes offered taught by one of their most loved instructors. Fairly immediately, my comment was liked by others (positive feedback), but then quickly deleted by management. The following day, I sent a private message. The owner (Butch) contacted me and asked that I give him a call. Apparently, I didn't phone him quick enough, so then I got a threatening message saying my membership would be terminated if I didn't call by the end of the week. I'VE ATTACHED SCREENSHOTS OF THE CONVERSATION. He is a coward who doesn't accept CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. He is unable to separate his emotions from running a business. He flat out refuses to put a suggestion box in the gym for anonymous feedback. Instead, he claims to rather have feedback given to him verbally or in-person. As you can imagine, not everyone is comfortable providing feedback in that manner. Take it from me though, if you want to work out at this gym, don't provide any feedback unless it's 100% positive. Anything less and he'll cancel your membership. ‍ I've also been told he canceled someone's membership for commenting that the new hire instructors were not qualified. On the subject of instructors, there are only 2 instructors worth going to and they are very rarely scheduled (I'm happy to provide their names if you want to contact me). The rest are simply former kickboxing members turned instructor who have no real qualifications and terrible music selection for a high-intensity workout! Try the Quince or midtown locations -- more qualified instructors and better management who actually LISTEN to their members!

The gym was very clean, staff was welcoming, and you tell that folks really get to know each other. The TRX class was amazing! I think the instructor adjusted a bit for having a few newbies (which really pissed off one of the regulars. She groaned and complained for half the class... seriously) but that didn't mean it was easy. TRX classes are normally pretty pricey, so it's cool that members can attend these classes, along with yoga, spinning, rowing, and Zumba without paying additional fees. My cons are the size, weekend hours, and variety of classes. The gym is pretty small. I need a bit more room and maybe a sauna or pool. Also, the weekend hours are very condensed and I don't think I'm their target demographic with the classes offered. I'm more into HIIT, boot camp, and barre classes than spinning and rowing, which take up a big chunk of their class schedule. Classes must also be scheduled in person through sign up sheets and members can't register or cancel online. Overall, it's not for me, but I would recommend folks checking this place out. It's got a great central location and lots to offer if you're looking for a welcoming community.

A small gym means personal attention, people who know your name, accountability!!! It also means having to sign up for classes (which I don't mind, since it makes you accountable), and less equipment and space. When I signed up, I asked questions. I asked about busy times, I asked about slow times. I made sure that they would have equipment and space available to me when I needed it. I don't just sign up for gym memberships and not go...I have been at different hours on different days. I have never had a problem finding a piece of equipment to use. They have kettle bells, and machines, and medicine balls. They have small stretching rooms with foam rollers and ab rollers. I don't think there is anything that I lack in this gym. If you need a lot of space (for whatever reason), you would know that this is not the place for you when you walk in the door. BUT it's definitely bigger than you think it is. There are plenty of small rooms, and they will let you bring the weights into the small rooms if you would like :-) I think the most important thing you can take from this review...ask questions. The entire team was warm and engaging from the very beginning. I've been working out with my trainer, Alex, for a little over 3 months now. My body has changed in so many ways but beyond that, my mindset has changed. The entire team, Alex, Ryan, John, Billy and several others, are really encouraging, knowledgeable and personable. They work with all types of people, from beginners to experienced athletes. I've been really blown away and nothing but impressed by my time at Apex so far. I would encourage anyone considering personal training to go to Apex, hands down!
