I'll leave the obligatory note that COVID is still a real threat to everyone's health, and I am glad Solcana is one of the businesses in Minneapolis that is truly taking it seriously. I've been a member of Solcana for nearly a year, and before COVID, the gym itself operated much like many crossfit gyms, with lots of classes, good equipment, and a friendly atmosphere. There has always been a strong focus here on equity and equality (at least as long as we have been members), and that's one of the main reasons why we chose to join. That focus has only become stronger over the past year, and I will touch on it a bit later. When COVID came around, Solcana, like all other gyms, shut down. I have to hand it to them though, they really tried hard to keep delivering a quality product to members, mostly through online classes. After the state started allowing gyms to open up on a limited basis, outdoor barbell classes began again. I've observed quite a few post-covid outdoor classes run by other gyms (whether out on a bike ride or in the park by my house), and many of them have seemed to completely ignore social distancing guidelines. Solcana has been completely different; all of the outdoor classes have felt really safe, with specific areas marked out for every athlete, small class sizes, and strict cleaning practices. This week, we were allowed to go back inside. However, that didn't mean Solcana relaxed their commitment to safety...if anything, they strengthened it. Indoor classes are even smaller, the distance between athletes has grown, masks are mandatory all of the time, and they are making sure everything is cleaned between classes (and there's at least an hour between classes). There are also still outdoor classes, depending on what type of workout you want and how safe you feel indoors. Even with all the new safety practices, the programming has been great, and we feel like we are getting a lot out of our membership, despite not being able to go as much as we were able to before (due to smaller class sizes and fewer classes, there is now a limit on classes per month, but that's completely understandable). Back to social justice...in the wake of the tragedy surrounding George Floyd, Solcana made an even stronger commitment to promoting equity and equality for all, and that's included doing even more with the BLM movement. The gym as de-affiliated from crossfit because of their comments/positions following the tragedy, but aside from not using that name any more (or giving them any money), the programming is pretty much exactly what you would expect from that type of gym. You will also find that this gym is extremely welcoming of all athletes, no matter who you are, what you look like, or how you identify, a trait not all CF gyms share. All in all, this is a wonderful, welcoming fitness community that promotes social justice AND takes COVID very seriously. The owner herself told me that she wants to be the safest gym in the Twin Cities, and so far, it seems they are succeeding.

The Saint Paul Bouldering Project has been a long time coming, especially for those of us who…read morestarted climbing at the Minneapolis Bouldering Project when it first opened. All the hopes, ideas, and community conversations that have built up over the years have finally taken shape in this new, loving, and accessible space. The gym was created with community, inclusion, and opportunity at its core. There are showers available, plenty of parking, and, as an avid gym goer, trainer, and bodybuilder, I can say that the fitness machines and classes are freaking impressive for anyone looking to do more than climb (best fitness equipment I've ever seen at a climbing gym). The team is wonderful and feels like a natural extension of the community that was built in Minneapolis & BP Community. More photos to come, but I really do encourage you to check out the space yourself and fall in love with the same community that I have. As someone who has climbed at both gyms since before day one, I'm excited to see where things go next. I will update in a few months!

I tried to call and get in touch with someone there to find a time to set up a meeting with a personal trainer. I was very excited and ready to start my powerlifting journey, and after seeing these positive reviews I thought this would be the place to do so. I called. Someone answered the phone, I didn't get his name, but he was chewing loudly in my ear the whole duration of the conversation. I asked for one of the owners/managing trainers and he said that no one was available. When I said I could call back later he told me "You don't need to." I hate to leave a bad review, especially considering it's my first review ever, but I'm quite fed up with not being taken seriously by gym owners, staff, and trainers. This was an incredibly disappointing experience.

I have had my eye on this place for a while as I travel pretty often to the Minneapolis area and have been looking for a gym just like this. Minneapolis has so many Anytime Fitness and Planet Fitness, which are not bad establishments, just not a place that fits my workout personality (i.e. "lunk alarms", no real heavy lifting and dumbbells that stop at 50#). Southside definitely provides the atmosphere to focus on your strength and lifting goals. Loved the gritty atmosphere of "go in and get it done, no excuses". The main gym is awesome and has a ton of speciality bars, racks, DBs that go up to 150 and platforms specifically for oly lifting only plus other platforms for powerlifting. I came in around 3-4:30 and was one of the only there...so no issue whatsoever of having the run of the place. Honestly I wish that there was a place like this in Omaha. Will back for sure next time here.

And I said no, so he said "oh you didn't send an email or anything and just came in" and I said yeah I was just going to drop in. Then he said "yeah Teresa isn't going to let you workout, you have to sign a waiver and pay a drop in fee and it's only open gym now so..." which I know that I have to sign a waiver and pay I was willing to do that, and I didn't care if it was open gym I just wanted to get a workout in. So I just walked back outside and had to call an Uber back to my hotel. I've been doing CrossFit for a couple years and I've been to a lot of different gyms in different areas and 90% of the time the owner/coach is super friendly and I'll get a waiver signed and maybe pay a drop in fee, some gyms don't even do drop in fees because it's just one or two days. I know it's stupid and not a big deal, but it's just irritating because the CrossFit community is supposed to be supportive and tight knit and when shit like that happens it just really irritates me. The guy was just really rude and condescending for no reason and that shit just pisses me off. Maybe the owner is nice but idk

I've been going to CrossFit Woodbury for a little over a month now. I have trained at chain gyms,…read moremartial arts studios, and experimented with purchasing home equipment in the past. I haven't ever experienced the sense of community or had instructors as knowledgeable anywhere else. The gym has enough space, the equipment is not only sound, but also there is enough of it, and the support group of people that train here including the coach, Matt, and his team really make it easy to get myself to the gym after work! I have yet to experience a place like this that actually makes me feel like they care about my goals, wellbeing, and overall satisfaction with the training I am receiving. I feel as though I am not just another person to make money off of. I would hands down recommend this gym to anyone looking to lose weight, get stronger, train for a specific sport, or make the transition from traditional weight lifting to CrossFit. This is the place to do it!
