I have to agree with some of the other reviews. It does end up seeming a bit too much like middle school gym class. The first time I went I thought it was pretty good. I went to a crossfit session for the first few times and they were basically the same thing. I am a girl and don't want to look like a boy. I really think most of the workouts are for men. After a couple of weeks, I started to get that giant bulging neck look, not cool! I went to a bootcamp session to check it out and I HATED it. Way too much running. I don't need to pay a ton of money to run. I can do that for free. There were not enough modifications for beginners and I hurt myself. I couldn't do anything else after that and I have not returned since. If you are not a dude and haven't been working out like crazy for a few months before you go, a pull up, ain't gonna happen! I also had a problem with it being way too crowded. It was impossible to do a lot of stuff due to spacing problems and the fact that lots of the people there were jerks and just walk right in front of you. I didn't want to hit people when I was jumping rope, so I would stop when they walked in front of me. Another issue I had was not being able to hear the instructors. This left me asking others what was going on and , and they often said they didn't hear either. Luckily I used a groupon and didn't sign up for a membership, which is over $100 a month I hear! The music is just awful. I should never be subjected to the band "Disturbed" ever again. Heard enough of that awful music from boyfriends with bad taste in music back in high school. read more

If you loved gym class in 8th grade you will love Crossroads Boot Camp. But if you're actually an adult ..... The classes are too crowded - easily 20+ people each time - and badly taught by meatheads. The music is deafing and you can hear what ittle instruction there is. The emphasis is on speed and despite their claims to the contrary, there is no attention paid to form. Unless you are already in top shape this in not the place for you. This is not the place to get in shape, but instead a place for hot dogs to show off for each other. Too many people, 'one size fits all' approach, and at best you'll be embarrassed and at worst, injured. I have been working out 5 days a week for 25 years and this was one of the worst fitness experiences I've ever had. read more

If you're the kind of person that enjoyed gym class as a kid, this might be the place for you. I, however, am not all that interested in standing around and watching feats of strength from meatheads, so I found the atmosphere here to be less than satisfactory. My three specific complaints are: 1. The instructor did not provide enough instruction for newbies - I struggled to hear anything over the loud music. 2. The stretch at the end of the workout was a joke. Yes, I can stretch on my own, but if I'm paying for a structured workout, I feel that should be a part of the program. 3. The particular circuits I've experienced in Crossfit all worked the same muscles over and over again - my biceps and quads were fatigued after a few rounds, while I felt like the rest of my muscles (core especially) were mostly unworked. read more

I lost my belly fat with Crossroads Bootcamp in 2010. I love this place. But the whole group-setting-let's-do-push-ups-and-sit-ups-and-jump-rope thing works for me. If you enjoy working out with like minded individuals and don't need a ton of direction, this is the place for you. If you need individual attention to get through the work out, I would recommend finding a personal trainer. (I believe the owners of Crossroads Bootcamp also run a personal training program... but I could be wrong.) I took five months off and gained a bit of my belly fat back. (Winter months without CB will do that to you.) But I'm happy to report that I've been at Crossroads again for about a month and already see that my body is getting back to where it was. The workouts are challenging but they deliver fast results! You sign up for classes online. When the groupon users all came at once, I had to plan my workouts weeks in advance. I like it better now that the groupon madness has ceased. read more

I got fat. I did. I played sports up until college and then I took up drinking as my hobby and it showed. Then one day I saw a Groupon for Crossroads Bootcamp and said "what do I have to lose? Other than this extra weight." I took the dive. I purchased the groupon and inadvertently changed more than just my weight. The workouts are tough, they're high intensity with minimal rests. They improve your endurance, strength, agility, overall athleticism. They have two different kinds of classes bootcamp and crossfit. Both are fantastic and TOUGH! Taught by knowledgeable coaches that are going to push you out of your comfort zone and into a better you. The gym is friendly and welcoming, it can be intimidating at first but that's any gym. 6 months, 25 lbs down and I'm raving about this place. Not only did I lose weight I turned into an exercise addict. It has significantly improved other areas of my life that I didn't realize were lacking, I've become more productive at work and at home, and in general I'm happier. Give it a try!! read more

I love Crossroads Boot Camp. I'd been wanting to try Crossfit for a while but didn't want to shell out the $150+ per month to join, plus one of the people I talked to said you HAVE to train 5 days a week which I just can't do. Anyway, walking out of Grinders one day I saw Crossroads Boot Camp. The location is great for me, since I work in the Plaza and live just north of the river- it's right at about 18th and Holmes. The on-ramp classes are designed to get you going with Crossfit and are there to make sure your form is correct and you don't hurt yourself. All classes are extremely intense and pack a crazy good workout into a short amount of time. While difficult, they are also extremely rewarding. I walk out of there after each class feeling stronger than I did the last time. Then I'm sore for about two days. :) The trainers are knowledgable and encouraging, the gym itself is small enough that you don't feel like a small fish in a big pond, and everyone is super friendly. I haven't tried a boot camp class yet but I've heard they are a great workout as well. This place is great if you're looking for a challenge and wanting to get into shape fast. Even after just five classes, I feel stronger and can feel the shape of my body changing. Two thumbs up! read more

This gym offers instruction, motivation, and as much perspiration as you can afford. The coaches know what they're doing, how to make it work best for you and are always approachable. I've been a member 8 months now, and I'm a huge fan. When I started my membership last year, my body being somehow fat and scrawny at the same time. So I was newbie, level zero, and hands on my knees very quickly. If you put in 3-4 visits a week and stick with it, you will see huge results in a relatively short time. That's only 3-4hrs a week! I travel a lot and drop into boxes (crossfit gyms) all over the country. Crossroads makes most of them look like crappy YMCA gyms. The equipment is in great shape, plenty of equipment to go around for even large classes, and it's always very clean. New? Start with the Crossfit OnRamp classes. Tell the instructors if you are new or don't have a movement down or are lost. They are very helpful but can't keeps eyes on everyone. Bootcamp clases are more focused on cardio and can be helpful to get you in shape. Can't do pushups, pullups, boxjumps, etc? They show you how to scale the exercise into something you can do that helps you build up the strength to do it properly. Just don't be that new guy who tries to do the same weights as veterans and pulls something and never comes back. Slow and steadily push your self. After a few months in (or sooner), you will experience a certain euphoria after every class. Equal parts endorphins and pain that keeps you coming back. read more

I've been going to CrossFit on 18th since May of 2011 and I love it! The instructors are pros, the classes are tough, and I've lost weight and look more long, lean, and toned. The instructors are exceptional, kind, and genuinely enthusiastic about helping their students, and I love my classmates as well. I also got a huge kick out of the reviews calling us meatheads. I feel like I should get that on a shirt! ;) Many of us work downtown at desk jobs and come to Crossroads Boot Camp to stay healthy, so not necessarily my idea of a meathead, but to each his own. If you like group-based workouts, this is a wonderful gym full of fantastic people and I can't recommend it enough! read more

I have been to a fair amount of crossfit gyms in Kansas City and across the country, and Crossfit on 18th is BY FAR the worst fitness experience I have had. The coaching is a joke. They constantly stress to focus on form, but fail to ever explain what proper form is. From what I have witnessed they are more focused on people adding as much weight as possible as fast as possible. Which leads to serious injuries. Everyone is always talking about how dangerous crossfit is, Crossfit on 18th is the perfect example of this. The programming is so inconsistent, which leads to injuries. There is NO REASON to one rep max every single week. I feel sorry for the people that have never done crossfit before and this is their only exposure. I can assure you if you go to this gym with no previous experience, you will get injured and they will have no idea how to modify the workout for you. Crossfit on 18th also always stresses this concept of community. I was a member there for over 5 months and NONE of the "veterans" ever introduced themselves to me. It felt like a high school clique that no one was cool enough to join. I have never felt more unwelcome at a place that I was paying to be a part of. If you are looking for irresponsible coaching, an unwelcoming/unfriendly environment and constant injuries, Crossfit on 18th is for you. Bottom line, this is exercise, no one is training for the crossfit games at your gym. read more

From the first moment I stepped into Crossroads Bootcamp, I felt like I was home. The workouts are scalable and I have gotten exceptionally better over the year that I have been there. The staff is super knowledgeable and willing to assist whenever you need guidance. They are also very community focused and have hosted several fundraisers within the last year to help local and national charities.
