My family has had two separate loved ones stay at Warren Barr in Highland Park, and both…read moreexperiences were extremely disappointing and stressful. One of the most serious issues was the lack of reliable transportation to scheduled medical appointments. Patients were frequently not taken on time, which disrupted care and created unnecessary frustration and concern for their health. The quality of food was also consistently poor, and overall care from staff felt inattentive and uncaring. Medications were not always given at the scheduled times, which is especially concerning in a rehabilitation or skilled nursing setting where timing is critical for patient safety and recovery. Communication with staff was another major problem. When calling to check on a loved one, we were often met with unhelpful responses or even had calls abruptly ended, making it extremely difficult to get basic information or reassurance. The rehabilitation services themselves did not feel effective or supportive, and overall the experience for both family members was very distressing. Both individuals who stayed there were extremely unhappy with the care they received. Facilities like this are required to follow the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act (210 ILCS 45), which guarantees residents rights to proper medical care, timely medications, dignity and respectful treatment, and reasonable communication with family members. In addition, federal CMS regulations require skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities to provide appropriate care, ensure medication management, maintain adequate staffing, and uphold patient rights. Oversight is also provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), which investigates complaints and can issue citations when facilities fail to meet required standards of care. Based on our experience, this facility did not meet expected standards of care, communication, or professionalism. Significant improvements are needed in staffing, training, responsiveness, and patient care.

We had two once-a-week Homemaker Aides from Serenity. The first one was a nice young woman who did…read moreabsolutely nothing unless she was asked, and spent a lot of her time in another room on her cellphone. We created a list of things that should be done each visit. The first time she kind of did some of it, then never asked for the list or ever took any initiative in doing any work after. Maybe she'd wipe the stove, take out the trash. Half-assed bathroom cleanup. There were obvious things that needed doing; take out the trash, do a quick floor wet-mop, clean up the kitchen and the bathroom. Refill fridge with waters, beverages, sodas from the pantry. Easy stuff. 1 hour of actual work and then she could have timed out the clock. The next gal only came a few weeks. Another one who did virtually nothing. She even told us she is not "allowed" to clean the toilet! Her first visit to the home for a "meet-and-greet", the topic of photography came up, and her elderly client gave her a camera! A nice camera, older (Sony cybershot w/ a Zeiss lens), but still worth a couple hundred dollars or more! I wonder if the employees are given any instruction on the ethics of accepting gifts of value greater than $20. Did absolutely NOTHING unless asked to. She came a few more times and got another job. The staff here seems to have ZERO training in what they are expected to be doing as Home Helpers. They don't even ask the client, "Hi, what would you like me to do today around the house or for you? Would you like something to eat/drink?" I was there to provide a tour of the place, showing where things were, but they seemed to absorb zero info. They don't even bother to engage with the client if they don't have to. I think the only qualification for working for Serenity is to pass a criminal background check. Sad. Old people who need help are being taken advantage of. Family, who can't be there 24/7 are watching what's done, when they can. And what I've seen hasn't been good. We are working with a different company now. A bit better, but all these employees do "slow walking" and "how do I do that?" and hiding out in another room. SAD

I agree that this company is very diverse, however it seems like they hire off the street. The admin manager lacks any professionalism and there are constant lies. Schedulers are very disorganized and there is almost frequent miscommunication. Timesheets are a mess. They have electronic charting yet they still require paper timesheets. Doesn't make sense.

I'm sorry to say our experience with Whitehall was not a good one. First, the facility is dated and…read moreis in desperate need of repairs to the walls, and it needs to be painted. I only mention this since it's the first impression you get when you go into the facility. The good: the people working there in skilled nursing, physical, and occupational therapy seem to truly care about the patients. There are two main problems: (1) the food is awful, and (2) they don't have enough staff to support the patients. We were there with an older relative who had a knee replacement. She was not able to, or supposed to get up on her own and even needed help to go into the restroom. While we were there the first day, she hit the call button and we waited so long for someone to come to help her, she almost soiled herself. I had to go out of the room and find someone who could assist. The first night she was there, again she hit the call button for restroom assistance. Again, she waited to the point where she got up herself. Of course, someone one day out of knee surgery shouldn't do that, but it was that or soil herself so she got up. She made it to the restroom before she fell, requiring a trip to the ER. The next day, we talked to one of the therapists who explained they had someone call in sick the day before, requiring the facility to move someone off of our floor to a different one. This left her the only person monitoring the patients on our floor. They couldn't keep up with the patients. The next day, we spoke with a manager who contradicted the aide saying she didn't know why we were told they were short staffed and said they weren't. That was when I realized we couldn't rely on them to take care of her and decided she should be moved back to her assisted living facility and hire skilled nursing and physical therapy. I cannot in good conscience recommend Whitehall. I see similar comments in some of the other reviews, which I should have read before placing her there. I am terribly disappointed and even though moving her and hiring the help ourselves was much more expensive, I couldn't keep her in a facility where I couldn't count on the care. Oh - I gave them three stars rather than one or two because of the quality of the therapists. If they weren't good, my rating would have been much lower. Also, I see enough pictures of the facility posted that I didn't think I needed to take any. The ones posted by reviewers are pretty spot on.
