Amazing English pub with plenty of atmosphere and outdoor seating, set on beautiful grounds (with black swans!) in the middle of nowhere. The only downside is that the rest of the world has already discovered the place and after driving all the way out you'll be hard pressed to find a table for lunch on a sunny weekend. read more

Sit outside, if you are lucky enough to find a spot, the grounds are really beautiful and a great treat from the everyday dining experience. The food is good, but really it is the people. This place is as authentic a british pub as it gets. The food is great - english pub fare at a good price. The brandy bread pudding is phenomenal. It's definitely a good restaurant to treat unsuspecting friends with, even if they're not into eating in pubs. It's an experience unto itself. I'm sure this is an isolated experience given the vast majority of the reviews are positive however, our visit won't have us coming back. We'd heard a lot of good things about the Crow & Gate and had an opportunity to stop by last Saturday. For me, fish & chips is the favorite and where better to get the famous UK dish than an authentic British Pub. Not here. Remarkably, this "authentic British Pub" does not have fish & chips. I'm not kidding. It was later in the evening so we looked over the rest of the menu & the hostess suggested the roast beef & yorkshire pudding. Perfect. No further contact for quite a while. After siting for 45 minutes I went to ask the hostess. The C&G has a weird system where the hostess basically handles everything. As such I had to wait in a long line of incoming & outgoing patrons just to ask about the hold up. After five minutes in line (another 10 to go, I'm sure), I saw the server drop two salads at our table. I returned & asked server if the meal was going to be much longer & why it was taking so long. She said that with the roast dinner, the salad usually arrives about 45 minutes after ordering and the meal 15 minutes thereafter. Really, a full hour to get a meal on special. An hour to get a roast that was likely ready to server when we arrived & only need 15 minutes to prepare fresh yorkshire? The salad, by the way, was excellent. The roast dinner arrived & was disappointing from the first bite. The beef was over cooked. The yam was mush. The broccoli was warm but hard as rock. The cut potatoes were mushy and hard at the same time. The gravy okay but minimal. Only the Yorkshire pudding was good. When I paid the bill I complained about the meal & was told I should have been advised the meal took an hour. The hostess (a different one this time) was very pleasant & apologetic but offered no discount for such a horrible meal & overall experience. read more

The Crow and Gate came highly recommended as a stop on our vacation itinerary, so we sought it out for brunch on our way back to Nanaimo to catch the ferry. What a gorgeous building and setting! I was thoroughly charmed. The inside is pure English pub atmosphere, which I love. I wasn't a huge fan of having to order food at the bar from a chalkboard menu, as I felt rushed into making a decision, but I saw crab cakes, so crab cakes it was. They were fantastic, definitely homemade taste and texture. Very nice green salad to accompany them, as well as a small scoop of potato salad (would have liked more) and a roll with butter. The BF had oyster stew, which was delicious but seemed like a small portion for the price and was more like a chowder (though I've never had oyster stew before, so maybe that's how it's meant to be). I enjoyed a local Merridale cider with my meal. Great experience overall. read more

Called and talked to a hostess - Establishment will not allow a 3 month old baby to enter the pub, regardless of the fact that she will not leave her car seat the whole time except perhaps to breastfeed. This is not a liquor license issue - the law allows newborns but this pub apparently wants to discriminate against new parents for no apparent reason. AVOID. read more

The amazing property is what first catches your eye, then you go inside and are stunned by the menu. What to eat? What to choose? What on earth is half of the stuff on that menu? We had the juicy, tasty, pan fried oysters and the very filling bratwurst pub plate. Nom, nom, nom. We kept stopping eating in order to take pictures and chat with the people sharing our picnic table in the middle of a flower-filled, sunny garden. This is a little pub in the middle of nowhere, but with the best food and great scenery! So glad we decided to check it out. I had the fresh fried oysters, so good! My boyfriend had the Reuben and he said it was the best he has ever had! With the scenery, quiet atmosphere, good drinks, and great food, you can't go wrong here! We love this place, and it is the closest thing to a proper British pub I've seen outside Britain... Including the bar service, and dark wood interior. The food is always great... I love a good Ploughman's, and steak and kidney pie. Their trifle is awesome, and don't miss a walk around the grounds while you're there. We live 40 minutes away and still make sure to visit every once in awhile! The bathrooms were totally foul last time I visited, hence the lost star. read more

Pretty hard to beat....I remember reading a review in the (Victoria) Times Colonist that said they do British pub food better than the British and it is totally true. Everything is really well done from the decorating to landscaping to the food to, of course, the drinks. read more

This is our favorite meeting place with family and friends. Fun cozy atmosphere, delicous pub style food with flare, friendly staff. Lots of beer choices but they could add more varieties of wine. Is it enough to say that we went here on our honeymoon three years ago...And last month took a three hour round trip to visit Crow and Gate on our Seattle-to-Victoria weekend (already a 6 hour drive)? This is the closest thing we've found to being in the Cotswolds in England. The staff is friendly, the pub is cozy in sun or driving rain, and the food/beer are excellent. Visited yesterday lunchtime, couldn't find anything on the lunch menu (on a blackboard on the wall, no actual menu?) I liked so ended up with tomato soup and a sandwich. Strangest soup I've ever had, no roll offered, wasn't asked if I wanted white or brown bread with sandwich, came with awful white. If you've never been to Britain and one of their pubs, go here. It's about as authentic as you can get, including Guinness, Bodingtons, Newcastle Brown, etc on tap. Try the steak and kidney pie, but get there early. It always runs out. And the fried oysters are to die for. MMM! read more

Good consistent cooking.. Love going out there for a meal.. In winter you can cozy up to the fire and in summer enjoy sitting in the beautiful gardens. pleasant service from friendly staff. The roast beef is consistently good and the fresh fruit pies, in season, are amazing.. as others have said.. get there early or they do run out of some things which speaks to the freshness of the food. Correction!! I have been in several great British Pubs, and the Crow & Gate is better than any of them. They actually know how to cook a roast of Beef, and their Horseradish is awesome HOT! Their Oysters are amazing, and the Shrimp Caesar incredible..the style of service is casual. The most traditional foods are their Pub Plates and Meat Pies served with appropriate amounts of salads. I love that there are no TV's, or Sports or Keno nor deafening mind numbing music......Yes! you can actually talk to your friends and hear them. In the gardens you can hear the Hummingbirds and Finches and the staff are awesome. I knew the original owner Jack Nash and I know he would be proud of how his respect for his customers has been continued by Matt Olsen(third Generation). I have been a customer there for over 22 years, there is nothing like this wonderful gracious place to enjoy a meal with friends and bask in the beauty of Cedar. Patti read more
