6 months ago, we had a major fire at our property. +Insurance is something we take for granted until you need it and unfortunately only then find it does come close to covering what you and your family need. Your local agent is sales with no customer service, and the folks back at HQ are neither your friend or advocate. We found ourselves going nowhere fast with our insurance company. There was no manual or "company person" to help. Every process and step was an ordeal, what should take days took weeks and yes while your contractor tells you how to be made whole, and back where you were before you accident, your insurance company will come in at about a third of that. The insurance company's goal is to settle your claim at the lowest cost and move on. So do not rely on the insurance company to fight for you, you need an advocate. The insurance company presumes to be the "expert", while you are the amateur. This is your first rodeo - and they know it. Would you go into a courtroom without an attorney? No, in most cases you hire a lawyer. So, enter the public insurance adjuster, but beware. They come in many sizes, large and small and they charge a percentage fee, and their services and personal attention can vary greatly. In retrospect, if we have one regret, it would be taking too long before we hired Robert, and after a loss, every day counts. You actually do need to document every detail but you don't have time, energy or the expertise. So friendly advice: learn from our lesson and don't waste your time. We shopped for the best public adjuster, we interviewed so many. While the sales reps from the big Public Adjusting firm shared lots of impressive credentials and a fancy brochure, they missed one thing. Those sales reps are not the same people who would be holding our hands, and helping us day to day. I recently suffered a major fire loss estimated over $500,000.00 . I trusted my insurance agent for years with many policies and was shocked to learn this home was insured for only $340,000.00.
