Could not have been happier with Paul and his team at CSR South. Had a list of "out of the water" issues that needed addressed. Had a threw haul that needed replaced. Wanted a dripless shaft seal installed, new exhaust elbow, and several other projects. They were all completed in a timely manner, on budget. I took my boat in for fiberglass repair on the transom this winter. The initial customer service was good, repair looked good and the project came in on budget. After dropping the boat in the water and getting it back to my marina I attempted to wash off what I initially thought was loose dirt and dust. Unfortunately the boat was stained beyond a simple wash. I had just polished and waxed the boat prior to scheduling the repair. I'm speculating either overspray or paint dust from a neighboring project was to blame. I contacted CSR and expressed my concerns and they asked if I could bring the boat back for a few days to take care of it. I asked if they could take care of it at my marina in Tacoma otherwise I would have to take off a half day of work and find a ride back times two. They said 'we'll see what we can do and let you know tomorrow'. They never did call back, I reached out again by email and included photos of the damage, no response. After some time I decided to do the work myself. It took about 8-hours, medium polishing compound and a fresh coat of wax to restore it back to how they received it prior to repair. This was very frustrating and way to common in the marine service/repair industry. I chose a top rated shop and traveled outside my area to avoid problems like this. They did not take reasonable care of my boat while in their possession. When I bring my car into the dealer for a simple oil change it comes back washed and vacuumed. Paid the $900 bill and got it out of there. I immediately drove my 27' Formula Fastech 502ci/Bravo One H.P. up to Des Moines and CSR for a re-diagnosis of a transom leak, stiff throttle and possible engine removal. They were ready on my arrival, meeting me at their dock for haul out. The service manager even took his shoes before entering my boat. In the end the engine had to be removed and a expensive new transom shield installed along with some other parts. I also needed some tricky fiberglass delamination repair before the shield installation which came out great. (Eric is their on-site fiberglass tech) At all points they explained and showed me what was necessary to be done to effect the major repair. In the end, their firm estimate for the work was detailed and right on. NO guess work or upselling! The work performed exceeded my expectations and the boat was returned super clean and detailed. I saved over $2000 over the Tacoma marine repair center and CSR Labor rate was $20.00/hr cheaper with more experienced mechanics. I have been taking my sailboat to CSR in Des Moines for the past 4 years. I get the usual maintenance work done every year including bottom paint every 2 years. I have had some fiberglass repair work done as well. Eric does a sensational and very transaparent job when it comes to glass work. This last go round, I had some mechanical done which included having my valves adjusted and exhaust repairs. I thought my diesel ran well before, but it is very smooth now all the way up the tach. Watch out with this business! I literally caught them "cold" trying to overcharge me for work on my boat. I had scheduled a mechanic to come to my boat in the Des Moines marina, a 5 minute walk from the CSR yard. I was in the area and at my boat doing other work while the mechanic worked on it (doing an Impeller changeover). He came over at 2:30, and completed at about 5:30. I asked him how much it would be and he estimated 3 hours at $100/hr. Imagine my surprise when I got the invoice from the office a couple days later for 5 hours! When I called them, they showed alot of attitude and didn't bother to offer to check out the hours for accuracy. I told them I would pay for 3 hours or not at all and they accepted that but not nicely -- like I was the bad guy. Yuck. And the hourly rate is high ($100/hr) and the mechanic didn't even have the right tools for doing the Impeller change -- he had to use one of my tools to pull the impeller. read more
