Being the broke graduate student…read morethat I am, paying $40/year for a locker sounds MUCH better to me than even the discounted rate students will get for 121 starting this fall. If you are interested in classes then 121 might be the right option. But if you're looking for a good place to workout on your own or with a friend, Veale absolutely fits the bill. The cardio room has plenty of equipment, as does the weight room. There are two pools, a track, and a rock climbing wall as well. And did I mention membership is free for CWRU students and faculty? Just swipe your card. The locker rooms have daily (free) lockers and the paid assigned lockers, as well as showers and hair dryers. They also provide towels (though don't expect soft and fluffy in this department...but they get the job done). I have to say that I am super excited for the extended hours in the fall. Also, many people don't know this but 121 will actually be managing Veale maintenance. What that means for equipment and cleanliness remains to be seen, but I'm certain it will be positive. Overall, if you don't need a "cool" fancy gym and just want a good place to workout, Veale is a great option. I should also say that I workout in the weight room three mornings a week and never feel uncomfortable at all. I've been to gyms where the guys don't always respect the gals who are working out at the same time. Not so here. The athletes, army dudes, and everyday gym junkies have always been nothing but polite. Way to round out a positive review. EDIT: So, 121 is now managing Veale and there are some pretty nice changes going on, i.e. love that they got rid of the yucky drop ceiling in the weight room! REVIEW: Tremont Athletic Club just opened a second location in the University Circle neighbourhood of Cleveland. They opened this new location in December 2018. I visited for a free high intensity class on 23 February 2019 and I can't wait to go back. Classes all throughout the month of February 2019 are FREE but they do take a debit/credit card on file. They will not charge you unless you cancel before your free plan ends. Unfortunately, I was charged (see below). CLASSES: There is a growing list of classes to choose from. I attended the 10:00am Tabata/HITT class with instructor Michaella A. I haven't exercised in a long time so the class was hard for me but I definitely enjoyed the workout. The class was a mixture of cardio (jumps) and strength training. We used dumbbells and kettlebells of different varying weights based on your level of fitness. The instructor was motivating and led everyone through a great 50 min class. I've posted a photo of the Feb. 2019 class schedule or you can just go to their website. GYM: Huge. The athletic centre is big. When you enter, you'll see a large area open for individual workouts and personal training. There are all sorts of fitness machines here as well for building muscles. Around the corner from the main floor, there are additional cardio machines such as treadmills and ellipticals. SERVICE: Amazing. The young man at the front desk was super nice and explained the process of gym membership, classes, etc. I even called the studio to say I was running 5 mins late and he told me it was fine. It was nice of him to still let me into class because it was my first time here (eventhough no one should be late for class). PARKING: This can be a pain because the gym location is on a busy area (on a University campus) so street parking will most likely be taken. There was no street parking when I arrived. Plus, the gym is located above a apartment complex so residents are most likely parking in the area too. I found a parking garage around the corner but it is expensive ($6 flat during a weekend visit). During the week, rates start at $3 for 20 mins then $9 an hour. Since a fitness class is 45mins - 1 hour, you will spend $9 at the garage. I've posted photos of the parking garage rates so you can take a look at it. (EDIT on PARKING) -- I later found out that there is free parking at the University Hospital parking lot across the street. The gym will give you a hang tag to put in your car so ask the front desk about it. (EDIT on 4 March 2019) -- I enjoyed my free week of classes. They were fun and challenging. The free week ended on Sunday, 3 March 2019 and I was not ready to join as a member considering that $91 a month is way over my budget. They do offer some student discounts and employer discounts but none of those fit my criteria. I cancelled my free week on Saturday, 2 March 2019 but I will still charged on my credit card. Thankfully, my credit card company rejected the charge. I was still upset when I found out that Tremont Athletic Club charged my card even after I cancelled in person at the front desk and over email. TAC later messaged me (owner, Nick) on Yelp to say they fixed my credit card issue and offered me a free tank top. I thanked them and I do not need a tank top. I do appreciate how Nick (owner) handled this situation. He removed my card from their system and he sincerely apologized. I'm glad that TAC has fixed the issue as this mistake caused me alot of stress considering the personal issues I am already dealing with right now. I've forgiven them because this was a mistake but the issue is too ripe and fresh to forget right now. UPDATED REVIEW (April 2026) -- I joined the YMCA of Greater Cleveland in November 2025. I've…read moreenjoyed my experience so far. I visit almost every day and I love it. The fitness classes, swimming pool access, sauna and hot tub access, plus a massage and yoga room make it worth my while. I attend the Lakewood location (my home location) and sometimes I visit the downtown Cleveland location. Members can visit any location as long as they visit their home location the most in a calendar year. The downtown location is much bigger and newer so it feels fancier but the Lakewood location is solid. FITNESS CLASSES -- Free with your membership. I've really enjoyed their Les Mills BodyPump classes. I've also taken their compound circuits, cycle, pure strength, and barre classes. The bodypump class is my favourite because I love using weights. SWIMMING LESSONS -- These are offered for a separate fee. They offer swim lessons for children and adults. They offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes. I took their 10 week beginner adult swimming class from late January to March with instructor Elliott. I was nervous but I'm glad I challenged myself. I learnt a lot and I hope to sign up for another beginner class again as I'm not ready for an intermediate level yet. SAUNA/HOT TUB/STEAM ROOMS -- all free with your membership. I enjoy using the Sauna anytime I come and I've sometimes used the hot tub. The Sauna at the Lakewood location gets busy but I normally can find a seat or I just stand. Sometimes, I have to wait to enter because it is too packed inside. The downtown location's Sauna is bigger than the Lakewood one plus downtown has a Steam room but the Lakewood location does not have a Steam room. GYM/WEIGHTS ROOM -- This is upstairs and items where all the cardio and weight machines are. There are also 2 bikes and 2 rowing machines here. There are plenty of treadmill, 2 stair climber machines, and elliptical machines too plus free weights (dumbbells). Other machines include leg press, squat, etc. They also have weighted balls or medicine balls, sand bags, kettlebells, etc. There are more bikes in the cycling room. The 2nd floor also has a yoga room, a cycling room, a massage/quiet room, and TRX/extra weights room. All of these rooms are included in your membership. Of course, if a yoga class, a cycle class, or a TRX or strength class is happening then you can't use those rooms. The 2nd floor has a main big room where most of the fitness classes are held such as the Bodypump classes. CHILDCARE -- There is a childcare space that I believe is free with membership. So if you are a parent and need to exercise, you can bring your child here. Employees look after kids as parents workout. I don't have kids but the childcare service is a nice benefit. PRICE -- It's all relative. We all spend money on what we want. If you don't own a home with exercise equipment or live in an apartment with a gym then the YMCA is your best option. The YMCA membership is affordable to me and a fair price compared to most gyms. It's also cheaper than eating out everyday as some of us do (BAM!). There are different membership levels depending on if you are a child, student, adult, or senior. Call them to inquire. I pay under $50 a month before taxes for my adult monthly membership. PARKING -- Free. There is a huge parking lot but it can get extremely crowded because a lot of families are YMCA members because of their kids. The downtown location also has a free parking garage which is validated for YMCA members. The only issue that I have with the Lakewood YMCA is that the sauna is very small so it is always packed. I think the employees can do a better job at monitoring the sauna to make sure that no one stays in there too long. There is a sign outside the sauna that states it is limited to 10 mins every time but some people stay for longer. I stay longer when no one else is waiting to enter or when I'm in the only one using it. TIP -- While the cardio machines in the gym seem busy, I've learned that coming early in the morning before work sometimes helps because it is not as busy. After work (between 5:30pm - 8pm) is when the YMCA tends to be very busy. Overall, I would recommend the Lakewood YMCA. The price is very reasonable and the gym has a lot of classes and services to offer. The employees who work here are really nice and helpful. They also bring in cookies often from Insomnia cookies (on Tuesdays) because Insomnia brings their leftovers to the YMCA. Giant Eagle often brings some pastries and bread to the YMCA too which is cool for those who want it. I forgot what days the bread products come in but I believe the days varies. I plan to be a member for a long time.

I opted in, and was pleasantly surprised at the history and the way the original artifacts were preserved when possible. The building was otherwise very modern. We were able to see the indoor rowing room, the storage for boats, the Big House and a room believed to be a speakeasy a long time ago. They do summer camps for youth and also a great deal of outreach in the community to let people know about their rowing and sailing programs. Companies can rent out space for events or do team building in the indoor state of the art simulation rowing room. The Cleveland sign out back was a pleasant surprise also. Come visit! After entering the lower level I believe it was Jason who told us there was special seating available to us behind the goal. He personally escorted us to our seats and even had a special chair for my wife. Jason went out of his way to make us comfortable and have a good experience which we did.
