While I see a lot of reviews on here complaining about the numerous required classes not directly related to a specific craft, I actually really appreciated how the school sought to approach my education holistically; taking into account the entirety of my personhood outside of my primary field of study. As an animation and music student, some of my favorite classes actually included getting to study authors like Dostoevsky and Dante, learning the principles of leadership, Catholic Poetry, and even understanding the importance of Film Criticism. These all played heavily into my animation, music, and writing work. The university's biggest strength is its professors. I can name multiple faculty members who showed me throughout my studies that they cared about me not just as a number, but as a real person with struggles, hopes, dreams, and challenges. One professor in particular, after hearing I was struggling with health issues, invited me to sit in his office, talk it out, and plan practical steps to heal and enjoy the work I was doing. I can't put into words how much that meant to me. Spiritual Life on campus was also one of my favorite aspects of JPCatholic. They have mass daily and adoration multiple days of the week, as well as confession before most masses. This was the main reason I came to the school. I also was part of a wonderful household of women who were incredibly encouraging, steadfast, and had hearts on fire for the Lord. Not only were they integral to my walk with Christ, but were genuinely fun and joyful people to be around. In my own experience, I would say the downside of this school is the sociological aspect of it. Since it's a three year program, one third of the population is cycled out every single year, making it hard to establish a consistent culture within the school. (Which means reviews, both good and bad, about the community are rarely going to apply to the years following it). There are also no communal lunches (because JPCatholic uses apartments, not dorms) which means you really have to be intentional about going out of your way to meet people and maintain friendships. This can lead to loneliness epidemics across the school, especially for people like me who struggle with a workaholic mindset. However, I have multiple siblings and friends who attend other Newman Guide schools who have expressed the same struggle, so I'm sure it's also a human thing. At JPCatholic, you need to push yourself to get out there and make friends, schedule dinners with roommates, and feel like a part of the community outside your work. I would strongly recommend joining a household! The amount of independence JPCatholic gives its students can also be a huge learning curve for people like me who before coming to the school maybe did two loads of laundry in my life and could microwave a hotdog. However, I can say that although it was hard at first, I am so thankful I learned so many practical life skills while I was in the JPCatholic environment instead of having to learn after graduating. Finally, I would say my favorite academic experience at JPCatholic was definitely the senior project program (Animation Capstone). Like many others have mentioned on this site, you're going to learn at this school by doing. JPCatholic is a school that is tailored towards people who initiate and take action... or in other words, you're going to get out what you put in. I began the senior project process as a freshman, and I was moved by the people (especially students and prominent faculty) who actually took me and my idea seriously even when I had only been at the school for a few months. I loved getting to know each and every crew member that was a part of the project and it ended up becoming something much larger than I had originally dreamed. I'm so grateful for that entire experience and am humbled hearing people tell me about their experiences with the film itself. JPCatholic taught me that being a writer, musician, and artist is hard... but that I can do hard things. I came in as an optimist with big dreams, and left with even bigger dreams now grounded in perseverance, experience, and practical skills. I can't wait to take what I have learned at JPCatholic and continue to grow as an artist and person.

The campus is beautiful, huge and very missed so I didn't want people to get it confused with Thurgood Marshall College, one of the six colleges at UCSD. Overall, the college is fine. It has decent graduation requirements but if you ever need assistance with academic or college counseling, you're out of luck. The counselors in the college are rude, arrogant, and unhelpful. There's this one lady who has been working in the office forever.. she sounds condescending and is very impatient.. I hated having to deal with her every time I walked into that office. My bf had to call the college for a quick question (he graduated from that college as well) and he got her.. even he hates her from way back! If you want a college with great academic counselors, try Revelle College; although, their graduation requirements are a little harder.. may be worth it. I ended up taking a class for no reason b/c of the crappy counselors.

I was enrolled here as a freshman for the 2025/26 school year. This school is INCREDIBLY…read moredisorganized, and not just in a 'first day chaos sense'. I was not properly informed of the bell schedule, and the reasons that it was different on the first day. The assistant principal read my schedule and sent me to the wrong class. I missed a whole period - thankfully an elective - and sat in a study hall that had more students than seats. They were actively bringing in tables so that they could have a seat for everyone in the study hall. This should not be happening on the first day. Initially, I was supposed to take Math 2. I was priority enrollment, and tested into this. The administration claimed there was no room, and placed me in Math 1. Math 2 was not an option on the course selection. I was then placed in virtual Math 2. During my study hall, the link that was supposed to come up for a recorded class never came. I sat in study hall with AP bio homework that I was supposed to have over the summer. When my friends at the Studio campus texted me about their AP bio homework, I had my mom call the office to make sure I didn't have any at PLC. The office said there was no summer work. This wasn't true, and I only got a huge packet of summer reading on the day before school. While other people had already completed this, I was left behind. During lunch, there were so many kids that there was no room at the very few tables provided. Open tables either had no shade source, so were burning hot, or had a broken umbrella. During Gear Up Day, I was given the wrong information regarding school computers. An adult told me that if I was a Workshop student, that I could bring my own computer. My family ended up driving back to the school, because this information didn't match up with prior instruction. I did end up needing a school computer, and was only set up with Canvas a day before classes. Nobody had said anything about the app before this. I was incredibly excited to start this high school after a wonderful middle school experience at The Classical Academy Bear Valley campus. This school was not at all what I expected, and extremely disappointing.

CAHS-PL is the type of school where if you do your work, you WILL pass with AT LEAST a B. That is from a combination of excellent teaching, engaging work, and non-excessive knowledge. All the people I knew that got anything lower than a B were people who didn't really do their homework. I learned a decent amount of things - not enough to overwhelm me, but not enough to forget too many important details. Everything here was super easy compared to private school, as a junior and senior it was nice to still earn good grades but not have extreme amounts of work to do. When I was in the middle of college application season, I had a college counselor there tell me that CSUSM was impacted and it might be hard to get in. My weighted GPA was a 4.11, so I'm not sure where that came from, but it did stress me out. I was accepted in less than a day. My schedule was great. I didn't need too many credits so senior year I was at school 10.40am-2pm and it was amazing. If you're looking to make friends and have a social life, don't go here. A lot of kids just want to come to school, get their work done, and then go home. Most of my friends left before lunch, so I just used that time to do my work. If your kid works well on their own, this is the place for them. I highly recommend. It is 3 days a week, which is cool. I would get all my Monday and Friday work done on Friday, and then have Monday off! Or vice versa. It can be done, but I'd say around 3 or 4 hours of work will need to be done over those at-home days, but that's barely anything. I loved here, if this seems like a good fit for your kid, please send them here!

I just spent the last 2 years at this fine institution. IR/PS gets 5 stars for one simple reason:…read morethose 2 years have been two of the best years of my life (so far). Why? 1. I learned a lot. Before IR/PS, statistics were foreign to me and I had no idea what econometrics was. Now I (somewhat) know what a confidence interval is, and am familiar with regressions. Woo hoo. Thanks to IR/PS, I know what a public good is, and am familiar with the principal-agent relationship. Crucial stuff right? I should know what a debit/credit is, but frankly, the accounting professor sucks big time, so I still don't know what the hell that is all about. Oh well, nothing is perfect. 2. I partied a lot. Sure, I did a fair amount in undergrad, but i had plenty of opportunities to socialize while at IR/PS as well (just look at all the yelp reviews I've written the last 18 months to get an idea). I'll tell you this much: us grad students know how to drink and party as well as any undergrads. Well ok, definitely compared to UCSD undergrads. Hmm, yeah.. That only means we partied more than once a quarter. Just take my word for it- we found ways to have fun. At least those of us who didn't get caught up in the competitive bullshit. 3. The professors. They're all bright, most helpful, and many friendly. There are only a couple that I'd deem subpar (simply due to super boring lectures. one exception is aforementioned accounting professor, who wasn't boring, but sketchy as can be). 4. Last and most definitely not least: my classmates. The cool thing about this program is it attracts such a wide variety of people. You have us management people, who have a curriculum akin to a MBA program, the econ people who love quantitative crap apparently, and the non-profit people who are a lot more noble and optimistic than I am. Oh, and the politics and policy people. Not sure how to describe them (guess my generalizing skills are lacking tonight). Anyway, all these different groups are brought together at IR/PS. Result is an eclectic group of cool ass mofos. I can't think of any classmate who didn't have at least a couple interesting life stories. And I know I'm going to miss them all when i say adios to San Diego. Well besides the half that will end up in DC with me. So if you want to have an enriching two years and are interested in international relations, I strongly recommend going to IR/PS.

Fantastic graduate education for sure. Professors have impeccable academic and applied ("real…read moreworld") credentials. Very rigorous course load; 98 credits in 2 years, which is more than twice the load you'll get at GW's Elliot school and similar East Coast programs. In short you come out of the program with a superior skill set and knowledge base that puts you on par with any graduate from SEPA, SAIS or the Kennedy School. So why 4 instead of 5 stars? Over emphasis on the management aspect. Curriculum wise this is not a bad thing, however the majority of career services alumni connections are in the private/consulting sectors. I worry about IR/PS's ability to compete in the job market with the big name east coast schools in the realm of foreign policy, human rights, civil society, think tank work, etc. Name recognition. It's an unfortunate aspect to being located in SoCal, but the local invites good collaborations with Mex and Pacific based institutions (ie. US-Mex center, Center on Pacific Economies, etc.) A few things you should know: Quantitative heavy work load, if this turns you off (it shouldn't in this field) then look elsewhere. Language requirement is rather lax. Limited field work in the area (internships, volunteer work etc.) Alumni connections seem to be west coast oriented. So, go to this school if: You love the Pacific Rim, love quantitative work, want an exceptional degree, want to enjoy a diverse student body (interest wise/country of origin wise), love the So-Cal sun. Just don't expect a job to be waiting for you at the Council on Foreign Relations upon graduation...though you will have the necessary training.

I would give their events a much higher rating. I have had a great time at the staff picnic the past two years and the UCSD Idol competition is a great, fun idea. However, more important than the events, they offer staff scholarships to their members. The events coupled with the scholarships, I'd give them 5 stars easy, but my recent experience with them forces me to give them 2. I joined the UCSD Staff Association as a requirement to apply for a scholarship. The scholarship form clearly states: "The application deadline is Wednesday, June 27, 2008 at 4:30 p.m. Late applications will not be accepted." I called them the day before the deadline to see if I could drop off my application in person, instead of relying on campus mail. I was told the deadline had already passed - a month ago! I faxed my application, along with all required documents, and the documentation with the 06/27 deadline to them, and was told "Sorry, we cannot make any exceptions to the deadline. Somehow you found an older application online with the old deadline." Apparently, they recently changed the person who heads the scholarship program, and the form I was using was put out there by the old program officer. BUT I found the application on THEIR website! They should have taken it down, or made sure they changed the date on everything. I found two forms with the 06/27 deadline, and not one with the updated deadline! Regardless of the deadline, they SHOULD HAVE accepted my application, since it was their oversight. This scholarship is only offered once a year, and instead of making an exception, they said "You can always apply next year."

Here, I took the following courses: Shakespeare for English, College Algebra for Maths, Trigonometry for Maths, Anthropology for Social Sciences, California Politics for History, Native American Studies for History. I really enjoyed my experience. The coursework is rigorous, the professors are challenging, the classmates are competitive. But it's really an encouraging workspace for the mind and the soul of the student with a good attitude, as well as aptitude.

A recent decision made impacting all students taking asynchronous classes was made this week. The…read moreimplementation of the decision, as well as the decision itself was clearly not well thought out, forcefully and abruptly put in place during the seventh week of the Spring 2025 semester. That is the seventh week of a sixteen week semester. The decision directly conflicts with most course syllabi by way of materially changing the requirements of courses nearly half way completed. The change implements a test proctoring requirement where previously this requirement was unavailable, non-functioning or not required. Being that the requirement was unfairly implemented, it leaves students no opportunity to withdraw and receive a refund due to the very late notification and poorly planned timing. Due to this, students are subjected to unfair practices added after they have completed substantial course work or withdrawal with financial loss in tuition and materials. In addition, asynchronous courses as advertised and as described in Palomar course catalogs are intended to be without scheduling requirements for meeting or other activities. Palomar students depend on this type of course delivery to attend classes due to other time commitments such as children, family, work, etc. The poor timing and lack of consideration of the implementation of scheduled test proctoring is a very questionable endeavor.
