The three stars is for the empanadas and mojito options. The service was good and 'twas an aesthetically pleasing space. Unfortunately, the portion of yuca fries was too small. The entrees were nothing special and the rice x beans were disappointing. I'm pretty sure the beans were heated straight out of a can. Prices are high because of the location.

I visited during happy hour and learned from the person sitting next to me this was, pre-covid, *the* place for DC Happy Hour. That's a tall boast, but I see what she means. The prices were pretty reasonable. Good assortment of bar staples with a Cuban flair, along with a number of mojito options. I got the yuca fries plus a churrasco burger; it looks small on camera but it had plenty of meat. What I really digged was the vibe. It was all sorta Tuesday low-key. I'll be back.

The food was absolutely flavorful and delicious. The server was helpful and gave great suggestions. A great spot for a date night or a family dinner.

Had the Cuban sandwich combo and it was great. Perfect size and crispy bread with all the toppings. It was served with black bean soup and a salad. I personally didn't think the black bean soup was anything special. If i could get the sandwich without the sides I would have. For others, ask for the sides to be replaced.

Charming Cuban restaurant with delicious food and space to dance off the meal! The space offers a Cuban themed night life with dancing on Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30pm. Remember to keep your receipt for free entry to the party on your next visit I enjoyed the Salmon Del Vedado which was cooked to perfection. The salmon was juicy, meaty, and topped with a flavorful crispy skin. The coconut rice is not as coconut flavored as I anticipated, however, it was definitely delicious! It also has pistachios mixed through the rice which created a delightful balance of texture by adding a nice crunch. Tres leches is only tres leches if the milk is prevalent and this rendition was executed authentically! Very tasty, milky, and a SWEET way to end a great meal. The Pollo Asado was tender and juicy. The bread was a bit too crunchy for my preference, however, I enjoyed the flavor of the mango butter. I cannot fail to mention how amazing the espresso rumtini was! If you air on the side of a potent but sweet expresso drink, you'd enjoy. It is made with rum which was a nice twist! Service was great and staff were accommodating. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and recommend for a fun change of pace in DC. I'll be back for the Pescao Frito and the dance party!

The interior of this place is sadly better than the food. We were highly disappointed on this visit. We came because we were in the area and looking for something to eat after attending the Car Show. Luckily for us, It was their "Restaurant Week" special for $40 so we decided to give that a try. We were able to get 1 appetizer, 1 entree and a desert for that price. They also offered a (3) flight mojito for $18. The mojitos were warm and only one of them tasted good. The options were: classic, pineapple and Passionfruit. Now when It came to the food, the beef empanadas were good, but the chicken one was just mid. Their coconut shrimp was decent, but missing the coconut. However the sauce that It came with, was banging! The pork was so terrible, my friend described It as dirty dish water... so you can just imagine. The other food items were mid as well. They had Tres Leche and Flan for desert and the flan was decent, but the Tres Leche just tasted like soaked bread. To my surprise, the bread basket was super good! Especially the sweet butter All in all, this place may be a cool spot for their dance floor vibes, but the food is just not It. On the plus side, the service was excellent!

Walking back from the Christmas Tree Lighting, my friend and I stopped at Cuba Libre for some drinks (and to warm up lol). We were both impressed by how authentically Cuban the inside is, from the decor to architecture, and festive with the holiday lights. It was a little before 9 when we got seated, and we noticed the light up dj booth near us. Our waitress said at 10:30 they move all of the tables and it becomes a club. We ordered some plantains, a Passion Fruit Mojito, and a Paradise Rum Punch. We enjoyed both drinks, and the plantains were good as well. We appreciated the music was at an enjoyable level for listening and holding conversations, but that definitely changed at 10:30. It indeed became a club, with loud music and also people conveying to dance throughout the restaurant. It was a great way to end the night, dancing to salsa and bachata tunes.

Just what we needed after walking around the convention center all day. Stopped for dinner with no reservation and were able to get a seat fairly quickly. Considering the location, the food was fantastic! Started with some cuban bread with butter and a cuba libre before moving to the main star: lechon asado with rice, black beans, and fried plantains. The lechon was super flavorful, tender, and juicy (I'd used less capers, but that's a matter of preference), the beans were nicely cooked and thick enough to mix well with the rice (for cuban-style moros), and the plantains were ripe enough to make them super sweet, as one would expect. A little pricey, but location certainly plays a factor here. All in all, a wonderful, flavorful meal in the heart of DC.

Finally made it for Cuba Libre for the Restaurant Week. They offered a great sample of the extensive menu for a really affordable price. The empanadas were flavorful and packed with meat. I tried the beef and chicken which were equally good. The dipping sauce that accompanied it was zesty. Now for the main dish, the chicken was moist and spicy which made it the star of the show. It was the perfect amount and they served a decent amount that I was able to bring home leftovers. The cookie with the flan was a nice touch. Everything was thoughtfully curated together. The servers were really nice and knowledgeable about the menu. We went for an early dinner, but the place quickly became packed signifying it as a great option for dinner. The background music was A1 as well. Will definitely be returning.

Came here with some girlfriends and had a great time! The service was great, our waiter was very attentive and told us his recommendations! The food was well seasoned and tasty, great portions as well. The crowd was a mix of families, old and young. Definitely a time for a family event, birthday celebration or just hanging out! Will definitely be back!

I went to Cuba Libre recently and decided to try something new, Ropa Vieja, and absolutely loved it. My wife and I typically get and share the Gaucho. Service was great and the staff was awesome.

My daughter and I decided to stop here for a quick bite after watching Shen Yun in DC. We were seated promptly without any reservations on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't busy but there were a good crowd by the bar. We weren't that hungry so we decided to order a bunch of appetizers. Let me tell you! I was very disappointed ... that we did not come here sooner. Everything we've had was AMAZING! Only complaint I have is that I wish there were more of what we ordered. Surprisingly, we had a lot to take back home for leftovers. Service was also exceptional. Looking forward to trying more things on their menu.

Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar

Are 19+ allowed to come and enjoy the music?

Hi Allison! While all ages are welcome to dine with us, we only allow 21+ after 10:30pm on Friday and Saturday nights when we transition into a nightlife space.

    Is early evening kid friendly?

Hi Keeley! Yes, we're family friendly at all times except for after 10pm on Friday and Saturday nights since we transition into a nightlife venue. We hope to see you soon.

    Is cigar smoking allowed?

    No smoking is allowed

Hi! is the nightlife open for dancing?

Yea but it gets a little packed. It's fun but the dance floor is a bit small

    Is there bachata dancing here?

Yes, but they have stopped since covid has started.

What is the dress code for women on saturdays? Will they refuse you if you have sneakers on?

Dress code requires no athletic ware, no flip flops, no work boots. You will be welcome in with sneakers.

Are there ever any nights with a live salsa band?

Not that I've seen. Only dj's.

If I came in before it turns into a club, and I don't order any drinks, could I stay without them checking my ID?

Hello Antonio - We check the ID's of all of our guests who join us for nightlife. All guests joining us for nightlife must be 21 years of age or older, and have a valid ID. For questions about acceptable ID's and our policies, please contact Cuba…

What is the dress code? I can't seem to find the information online. I know there are no sneakers allowed is there anything else?

Make sure you bring your ID so you can use the appropriate restroom. They have bouncers there to check and will forcibly throw you out if you refuse.

What kind of environment they have on Fridays? What type of music? And what time to go?

Hello, thank you for taking the time to write us. We are a restaurant until 11pm , every Friday and Saturday we also have out late night venue beginning at 11pm. Over 21 years of age to enter and $10 cover in Fridays and $15 on Saturdays. DJ plays…

Started off with the "Taste of Spain" which included Pan con tomate, Aged manchego, Jamón Ibérico de bellota, and Boquerones con naranja. Since I couldn't eat the latter two, the server said they could double the first two, which was so appreciated. For my first course, I chose the Escalivada (fire-roasted eggplant, red pepper, labne yogurt, fresh herbs, olive oil, served with focaccia) and Croquetas de setas (creamy mushroom croquettes with truffle aioli). The Escalivada was tasty, but more on the tangy side; the bread was more crostini-like than focaccia. The Croquetas were so good: creamy, savory, umami inside and crunchy outside. Next, I got the Zanahorias (spiced baby carrots, sweet and sour reduction, orange honey yogurt, mojo verde, Marcona almonds) and Patatas bravas (crispy potatoes, salsa brava, pimentón, garlic aioli). When I tell you those carrots had me dreaming about them later, I'm not kidding- all of the different flavor combos paired with the perfectly cooked carrots were amazing. The Patatas bravas was pretty classic- crispy potatoes with creamy aioli and tangy tomato sauce. Finally, for dessert, I had the Tarta de naranja (orange olive oil cake, citrus-honey yogurt), and my friend had the Tarta vasca de chocolate (Basque chocolate cheesecake, macerated strawberries, chantilly cream). Both were tasty, but the Tarta de naranja was so good: perfectly dense cake, refreshing citrus, and great contrast with the yogurt. For my drink, I got the Forget-Me-Not refrescante (butterfly pea flower, thyme, honey, lime, ginger beer). Very interesting drink, not sure I'd order again but it was good. Service was great, super willing to accommodate my vegetarian dietary restrictions. Ambiance is really nice, very modern and elegant. Very accessible by metro, just a short walk from the station. 10/10 would recommend!

But anyways Paella was delicious, the flavor profile was super fun. We got the short rib and seafood, and we all preferred seafood as the short rib was a bit heavy. The fish in it was crispy and so good, especially with the green sauce- nice herby and refreshing contrast. The figs were interesting and fun. But not that filling... I did not like the patatas... sauce was good but the potato itself had none of its own seasoning and was tough. Yes crispy but not pillowy inside. The octopus was delicious and super tender. Would come back for seafood paella and charcuterie.

Date Night Done RIGHT!…read more D'Lena was such a pleasant surprise. From the moment we walked in, I was impressed by the exterior, but once we stepped inside, the ambiance completely sold me. The restaurant is grown, classy, sophisticated, and sexy without trying too hard, exactly the kind of atmosphere you want for a good date night in DC. And the service deserves its own paragraph! From the hostess to our waitress, the bus staff, and the manager, EVERYONE was attentive. What really stood out to me was how observant the staff was. They seemed to actually pay attention to customers' body language and anticipate what was needed. If one team member couldn't get to something quickly, another person stepped in. That kind of teamwork makes a huge difference because you never feel forgotten or left waiting unnecessarily. The manager was especially personable. While we were waiting for our food, she came over and actually chatted with us for about 5-10 minutes. Not the typical quick "How is everything?" check-in she genuinely engaged with us. That made the experience feel very personal. Now...the presentation of the tomahawk steak was EVERYTHING! If you order it, just know it is a LOT of food. It's easily enough for more than two people, so come hungry or bring people who are ready to eat! We enjoyed several things throughout the meal and loved the overall experience. My appetizer personally wasn't my favorite, but that's more about my own taste than the food itself. I'm not a huge fan of a lot of cheese, and this particular dish had more cheese than I prefer. If you're a cheese lover, though, this is probably right up your alley. And then there's the downstairs lounge! I absolutely loved that you can essentially have two different experiences under one roof. After dinner, heading downstairs for the jazz performance was the perfect way to continue the night. The music had a really nice Latin influence, which made the whole vibe even better. There is a separate bar downstairs, so one thing to know is that the drinks offered downstairs are different from the cocktail experience upstairs. Also, the lounge space is limited, so I'd recommend making a reservation/RSVP or getting there early if you want to secure a spot. Overall, D'Lena gave us exactly what we were looking for: good food, beautiful surroundings, exceptional service, and an atmosphere that felt mature, elevated, and fun. Being able to have dinner AND transition into live music without leaving the restaurant made it an even better date-night experience. Definitely a 5-star experience for me, and I would absolutely go back.

When it comes to hanging out in DC, the parking situation will make you reconsider your plans hahahaha! For me anyway... One of my girlfriends suggested this place & made reservations but I don't think you really need them here. We arrived on time and was greeted by the hostess and opted to sit outside since the upstairs was closed. The lime and mango combination swirl was delicious...we ordered a pitcher and it was plenty for us 3 gals. The seafood quesadillas was seasoned very well. Full of flavor...I enjoyed these with a garden salad minus the feta cheese and corn. My salad was fresh and the house dressing was perfectly distributed throughout my salad. My girl friends enjoyed their meals as well. One ordered the same as me minus the salad and added rice and beans and the other ordered the salmon with the stuffed crab...can't remember what it was called on the menu but it also was served with broccoli and she added a side of Spanish rice and beans. The maduros were also delicious! Sitting outside was cool but the birds flying all around was kind of annoying lol next time we'll just sit inside lol. When she first said the name, I actually thought it was a some short of shopping plaza and never would have associated it as a Mexican restaurant. I'm not sure it's history, but seems like a staple in the neighborhood as every time I drive by since that conversation with her, I notice how packed and busy it is. I recommended to my friends who were in town that we check it out and we were able to get seated outside relatively quickly for a Saturday evening. Our table started with their drinks. Half of us got the pina colada and the other half had the margarita swirl. I'd say the pina coloda was pretty good; not too strong and the ones who ordered the margarita seemed to enjoy it. We all had eaten before arriving, so we didn't order too much. They also served complimentary tortilla chips with salsa so that was pretty good and gave us something to nibble on. I ended up getting the shrimp tacos and their tortilla soup. The shrimp tacos were good, but the tortilla soup was the highlight for me. It was very flavorful, and full of vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, and corn. It also had shredded chicken and cheese in it, and was so delicious. I would definitely order it again. Our server was also very friendly and regularly checked in on us. The reason for one star off is just due to the cleanliness of the cups and plates on our table. I noticed food residue still on it, and although I personally didn't use the cup or plate, I didn't care to see it on the table.

Service was great and attentive throughout with multiple waiters serving our table and the space is beautiful and cozy. It wasn't too crowded around 5:30 when we came and wasnt too busy overall. We left a little before 8 and it never got too loud or too crowded. I think walking in without a reservation would be fairly easy. They have a great cocktail list and I really enjoyed mine! It was a unique cherry and almond flavored drink while my friend went for a cucumber type drink. Both great. We shared 4 tapas which were surprisingly quite large and ended up being plenty for the both of us. We did patatas bravas, mushroom croquettes, fried manchego, and calamari. The tapas were good/average but nothing to rave about. Our bill came to about $120 which is probably about standard now but felt overpriced for what we got. They do a 20% service charge with 5% being operational and only 15% going to staff. Not my favorite...I dont mind a service charge but burying an operational charge into it made us confused on whether the expectation was to still tip or not. I wish restaurants were more transparent about this. I wouldn't come back for a full dinner but drinks were nice and service was great so I'd consider spotting in for a happy hour if in the area. Worth a try overall. I hope they consider giving their servers the full 20% of the service charge. 5% for operations should really be baked into the prices or otherwise listed separately.

We passed Taberna Del Alabardero on the walk from the subway to the hotel. It looked festuve, pretty and there was outside seating. We glanced at the menu and decided to go back. The staff were friendly, attentive and provided great service. The first place I've been where they poured Gray Goose in my glass in front of me. Fantastic! The decor inside was beautiful and my favorite color, green. The pictures on the wall and the colorful drapes with wood accents made it very spanish and kund of historical lookimg. The food was amazing! We ordered the octopus off the main menu and 2 items off a June experice menu. The octopus tasted smoked to me. I ordered because based on what I read about the restaurant I felt they would do it well.. and they did! The potatoes needed a touch of salt for us, but we are salt people. The Croquetas were so creamy and delicious with the garlic shrimp. The cream cheese on the toast set off the flavors of the carleized onions and whisky reduction pork. The coup de grâce was the Cheesecake desset. It was warm and a combo of airy and dense. The granny smith apples on the side were tart and pallet clensing. So good! We also received shirtbread cookies and a chocolate cookie thing that were delicious! The prices are on the expensive side, but definitely worth it. Great place for sharung and date night.

Most recently went as a party of 4 and got the crab beignets, beef arepa, masa gnocci, and parillada for two. Crab beignets were our favorite - perfectly crispy and great flavor. Masa gnocci was a little overcooked this time but still yummy. Beef arepa is a classic dish to get at the royal; two people can easily share one arepa. Parillada was a hearty entree and probably best for 2-3 people. This amount of food altogether was just nice. We probably could have ordered one more thing to be extra full. I don't typically get Latin American food but love all the flavors at this restaurant. Next time will try their breakfast menu!

It had a beautiful chew with the classic burger toppings with an amazing pairing of their slaw with a garlicy aioli. The bun was very pillowy and soft with a nice crust. They also never lack on their specialty lattes. I got their carrot cake latte and it was just so fabulous. Extremely smooth espresso and perfectly steamed milk. Syrups made in house of course and you can tell. Just a perfect latte. I usually am an iced latte person but I recommend getting their lattes hot. Hits different.

For grub, I usually get the Lomo Saltado. So tasty...I usually share it b/c its too much for me. My drink of choice is always that $10 Caipirinha! We literally all shared our dishes, which is great because our bill was close to $200. I did not take pictures of everything. Music selection was great when we first got there it wasn't as busy as when we left.
