Awesome French fries, great vodka crans, grumpy bartender. Pool is not free which is a bummer, but a good atmosphere overall.

My wife's mushroom Swiss burger was amazing with great big chunks of sautéed mushrooms and absolutely fantastic homemade onion rings. My daughter demolished her mini corn dogs. I had the chicken Parmesan sandwich, which was fantastic, and the handcut fries made it even better. Our server, Marianah, was super helpful, friendly, and attentive. We are a little over a week into our trip around the upper Peninsula and this is the first restaurant we have ate at that we all gave an absolutely perfect score to! We will be back next time we are up north!

There's ample street parking and easy entry points. The bar is huge! It takes up nearly half of the restaurant and has great views of the bay. The food is good with generous portions. We both ordered the fish fry, mine with a bit of Cajun seasoning. The fish is prepared in fork-friendly bites and was very tasty. The batter was light and stayed crispy until it was all gone. I'm not one to rave about coleslaw but it is good here. It has the perfect crunch and isn't over-dressed (I don't enjoy soggy, wet slaw). Lots of local taps as well, perfect for all of that food. But it's the service, namely Sylvia (Trixie) that makes this a solid stop. She was hustling, greeting everyone, busing food and dishes, all while singing along with the bar playlist. She checked with every table as she went along, never letting anyone feel forgotten or overlooked. As the crowd thinned she had a few minutes to chat with us - she's a friendly ball of energy and an asset to Skipper's. We'd come back and sit in her section anytime!

Seeing it won MLive's "Best Local Bar" award intrigued me, so I stopped in for a beer and a burger. I don't know how this got put in the category of dive bars. It's a pretty typical small town UP tavern. It's clean, decorated with the usual game heads and yooper memorabilia. Ceiling tiles dish up a little history with your beverage by commemorating locals or some of the long-established hunting camps in the area. They had a few UP beers on offer, so I took a bottle of Upper Hand brewing's U.P.A. Very nice pale ale with more flavor than most, trending toward IPA territory. Burger was fair. Nice sized but overcooked, a little chewy. I got swiss and mushrooms on it; the swiss was processed and the mushrooms came from a can. But they never bragged about artisanal fare. It wasn't bad, and I'd probably get another burger there...maybe just a plain one though. Would definitely get french fries again--they were excellent. Thin cut, crisp, put me in mind of McDonald's fries on their really good days. There were about five people there when I came in at about 9:00 on a Friday. They left quickly, leaving me alone with the bartender, before a couple came in a bit later. Didn't feel out of place though. The bartender was friendly, and I got into an interesting conversation with the couple. Very comfortable hangout, even with a thin crowd. Do be aware Hoppy's does not take credit cards. Luckily there's an ATM in the back. Nice to have another dining option in Kenton.
