Their product is good...four different coffee styles were all prepared well by the baristas and were certainly tasty. The baristas themselves were excellent...personable and attentive. But if you're looking for a place to hang out for a little while, this isn't the most comfortable joint I've visited. There are just a few small tables with hard bench type seating. But the real kicker is that there isn't a public restroom! This old man bladder CAN'T slurp down a 24 oz coffee, cross his legs, and hope for the best! So if I'm in downtown Butler and want a coffee for the road, I'd certainly visit again. But it's not a comfortable place to hang out for a while. If you are looking for a classic dark and smooth espresso in your americano or cappuccino, this is not the taste you'll receive. A super cute place with lovely people but my cappuccino 100% missed the mark. Very average coffee and often not hot. One time (really) I asked them for it to be hotter (as in, make more or let's come up with something else) and she microwaved it. Really. Cmon. One plus is the espresso ice cubes. Gotta give credit where it's due but it's just not enough for me to return with better options around. read more

Cummings has been around since 1905. They moved to their current location ten years later. It's incredible when you think about how long they have been in business. Generation after generation. I visited last month, after a 15 year absence. The shop hasn't changed much. They still have the coffee bar. They still make shakes. They still have the old marble soda fountain and mahogany booths. I remember hanging out here, playing cribbage with an old love. Savoring a handmade chocolate treat. My favorite treat now is their Pumpkin Spice Latte. Still love their caramels. And the cashew bark and pecan turtles are yummy, too. One thing has changed. They ring up your purchase on an iPad. And you have the option of texting or emailing yourself the receipt. Take one of the best and longest running chocolate confectioners in Western PA and add to that an independent-minded coffeeshop whose quality, prices, and service puts the bigs chains to shame and you have one of Butler's finest downtown businesses. Having grown up in Butler, I recall stopping at Cummings in my teenage years for their delicious chocolate nonpariels, marvelous malted shakes, and the ubiquitous refreshment of a true hand-mixed fountain soda like a Cherry Smash or Cherry Coke. The fountain service has since been replaced by gourmet, fair-trade coffee and the menu extended to include baked goods and extended ice cream service. But the handmade chocolates are still the heart and soul of this business, and clearly what differentiates it from other coffeeshops, even if the number of candy choices is somewhat reduced compared to days gone by. The chocolate dipped marshmallows and pretzels are without a doubt the best in Western PA, while the creamy, delicious milk chocolate and dark chocolate bark (with or without house-roasted nuts, espresso beans, blueberries, cherries, and -- my favorite -- toasted coconut) are a chocolate lover's dream come true. There are seasonal items and special requests that appear from time to time, but those are the true standards. It's always a treat to see what Tom has whipped up and placed under the counter when you stop in the for a cup of joe. While I have since moved away from Butler, there is never a visit that does not include a stop into Cummings. The baristas are helpful, the icecubes are frozen coffee, (no watering down yer iced beverage!!) And after working and drinking Starbucks for a few months, I was surprised at the quality and prices of everything here. The shots are good, so any lattes or esspresso's are good (not compared to Stomptown Coffee in Portland, HOWEVER Starbucks isn't either SO..) and they're priced perfectly. Completely reasonable. The chocolate's yummy, and has a creamy texture similar to Barkus'. Their marshmallows and milk chocolate are the best. The dark chocolate with french mint thingamaboobers are yummy and nice-textured as well. Not a fan of the caramel. Either way, it's 17.50/lbs for majority of chocolates and I got a boxful at 1/2 lbs. (they're light). Definitely check it out for the atmosphere, prices, and baristas. read more

They always make you feel welcomed and Barry is super friendly any time he's there. Their coffee and great and I love that while keeping the old ambiance, they're keeping up with the current trends in coffee. Cummings is a century-old mainstay in Butler, which is an incredible feat considering how candy and coffee shops often come and go. Baristas have always been friendly, they're knowledgeable about the product and have been more than willing to try out unique latte combinations I've suggested. I've particularly enjoyed the grasshopper and campfire mocha lattes, among the specialty drinks on the menu. Iced coffee always comes with coffee cubes, so no worries about ice diluting your drink! I'm not as familiar with some of their other products, like the chocolates and pastries, although they're always tempting. Cummings works with local businesses like Mazzanti's to provide ice cream, and local bakeries some of its snack fare, like biscotti, muffins, etc. The mahogany booths and soda fountain counter pay homage to the shop's long history, but I think the atmosphere would be more inviting with more modern updates. The dark furniture and walls make it appear a bit cavernous. I think some lighter paint and additional lighting would do this place wonders, while still honoring some of the old-school traditions. My favorite place to go for coffee!! Their lattes are amazing( my favorite is the grasshopper, minty and chocolate-y, I get mine blended with ice and with lots of whipped cream), fresh made Hershey milkshakes for the kids, delicious, huge muffins or scones. Wonderful selection of chocolates, and you can buy coffee beans in bulk, in such flavors as graham cracker and creme brûlée!! I buy the beans, mill them myself and prepare at home with my French press.... Soooo yummy! Not to mention this is a local, family owned business:) And you just have to see the interior... Pretty much completely original on the inside, from the amazing mahogany booths, the beautiful mahogany display cases and shelves, original pressed tin ceiling,original cash register from early 1900s is on display also!!
