Firstly, I want to get something out of the way. I am a genuine New York City/New Jersey Bagel snob. My experience with Bagels hails back to the old H&H on the West Side of Manhattan on Broadway. They had a world-class shipping business which the owner squandered with drugs and tax evasion. What a pity. My second favorite place in New York is Best Bagels and Coffee in Hells kitchen. Fantastic. So here I find myself moving to the Pittsburgh area and wondering if these people know anything about Bagels. I visited a place called Pigeon Bagels. The lines were down the block on a Sunday morning for that place. The bagels were just ok. They were not super bagels like New York City. They were certainly not worth waiting a half an hour to get a dozen bagels that were just ok. So I had my son bring out five dozen bagels from New Jersey the other day. That'll hold me over. Doing my Bagel surveillance, I found out there was a place in Butler that claimed to have New Jersey bagels. This morning I checked it out with very little hope of believing the hype. I had an everything bagel with lox and cream cheese, onion, and tomato. My wife tried the blueberry bagel. To my utter surprise, the sandwich was really good! If you look at my other reviews, you'll see I can be brutal when it comes to reviewing Bagels. As someone who used to live in New Jersey and who used to frequent H&H bagels, having lived in Manhattan, this baby is the real deal. The real McCoy. The genuine article. You get my point. I'll be coming to Downtown Bagels often. The price for the individual bagels are on the high side by over a dollar, but the sandwich prices are very reasonable. I'm going to give this place two thumbs up. read more

Downtown Bagelhouse is such a great addition to downtown Butler. Their menu is simple to follow and the seasonal rotations look yummy! Awesome bagels. Thick and chewy like a good bagel should be. Crunchy outside and pillowy inside. Perfect to toast and smear on cream cheese. It's a new establishment so no frills yet. Great bagel selection and basic cream cheese. On the Saturday morning I stopped, they had egg, plain, pumpernickel, wheat, onion, everything, cinnamon raisin and a few others. But, really, is more than that needed? Owners were super nice. Both introduced themselves, explained a bit about the shop and made me feel very welcome. Will definitely be back again. Worth getting up early in the morning for the awesome bagels. If you are grocery store bought Lender's fan, might not be to your taste but try them anyway. Support local and you might become a fan of "true" bagels, too. read more

To me, the "Downtown Bagelhouse" serves real bagels! They are excellent, although when I get the later in the morning or early afternoon, the bagel selection is limited. I guess this is to be expected, as their bagels are baked fresh daily I do believe. The owner and working staff are extremely personable and pleasant to deal with. My only negative comment; they are a bit pricey. read more

The breakfast bagel sandwiches are bomb! We recently tried the turnpike and the big boy Benny both on an everything bagel. Very filling, bagels themselves where fresh and tastey. Pretty good food but...$26 for a dozen bagels? I would like to frequent Downtown bagelhouse but not at those prices.

Love the owners and the bagels are tasty but anyone who has been to Jersey, NY, or Long Island would be offended at the prices of their bagels. $3.00 for a bagel before you involve cream cheese is more than double what you pay in any of those places (all of which are known for high prices!). read more
