The YMCA is the only place I know that cancels swimming when it thunderstorms and it's beyond ridiculous. What's the point of paying for swim lesson if they keep canceling class and they only allow you to make up one class between sessions. The staff in the reception area can't tell you if there will be make up classes. The coach who teaches the class can't confirm. They all direct you to the swim director. There should be some better communication there. read more

I'm a senior whose been a member here for years but in recent weeks have been confronted with aggressive and unkind staff at the front desk questioning my membership despite being up-to date with my payments and never behind. I am ending my membership as I fear entry into this facility. It is sad and unfathomable that the YMCA appears unable to hire staff with simple customer service skills. This location really surprised me, it's well organized, the staff are super friendly and helpful, it's extremely clean and I mean extremely and lastly the gym facilities are excellent with new and modern machines in a very spacious area. The electric car charging is a scam at the YMCA. I have been getting billed for the two times I charged a EV there. They claim it is free for two hours then $3.00 per hour there after. They send you text messages that its free but once you unhook they send you a bill ($1.86/$2.21). The charging station company claims its a YMCA policy and not their problem. Overall the Y, isn't a small "gym" but it's pretty small. Downstairs they have the pools but I never utilized them so I have no idea about all that. Their weight room though is pretty small and depending on what time you go it could be hell waiting for racks to open up, not to mention when rude guest claim a rack and walk away (that's not the Y's fault). Their child watch is AMAZING though and I would 100% keep my membership if only to keep my child in the child watch, the employees are all extremely friendly (except one that seemed to be rather annoyed by a parents presence but maybe not) they always remembered my child's name and I always saw them actively watching and/or interacting with the children. However paying almost $100 monthly for what little I was using seemed to be an exorberent amount, and they had just raised prices. read more

I enjoy going to the Y with my toddler. I grew up at the Y, and where I went, they had an impressive number of young children's programs. This one has almost none. It's disappointing, because as a mom and toddler, we have to pay $94 a month for the family plan (it's cheaper for a single parent and child over the age of 5), and then all that is offered is a single swim class for kids over 6 months, then a single gym class for kids over 18 months. It's not until 2 that you really can start getting use out of more of the classes. We do love the pool. Open swim times are very limited, so it can be tough to get there. Then if you are with a child under 18 who needs help, you are stuck using the children's locker room. The showers take 5 minutes to get warm, and the swim team kids and their colorful conversations disgust me. I would love to have a separate locker room for young children from the one for preteens! I am happy with the fun zone. If your child is independent, they will have a great time in there. Though my child loves the pool, he cries at having to walk away from the fun zone to get there. There are days and times that are better to be in there, but overall I love letting him go in to play. The open gym is great! I hate that there is an extra fee to use it though. It really should be included in your membership. That and the pool is all that is available to toddlers. It would be like having to pay an extra $3 each time an adult wanted to go into the gym and workout AFTER paying for the membership. It's expensive, there is a lot to be desired, but there isn't anything better in Frederick. read more

Definently a huge fan of their summer camps for kids. We have 2 boys in elementary school so over the summer we will pick 2 weeks to send them. We've done it the last 2 summers and they loved it. Recently the Frederick City YMCA fees are more than the Green Valley fees. We are forced to cover others while Green Valley is lower. If the YMCA want to raise the fees, raise it for all including Green Valley and other owned facilities. This not fair to charge one area more and not another. Their solution, like others, if you don't like it, you don't have to be member. Typical response to avoiding their responsibility to fairness. They should lower the Frederick fees or evenly spread the fees or cost across the board for all members and not give free membership away in light of charging more for their fees. Nice facility. I leverage the fitness room only and there are cheaper alternatives for that in the area. But seeing the good the Y dies fir the youth in the community I am happy to pay a bit more. BUT- I'm unhappy with the policy on stopping attendance for a time, and then having to pay the initiation fee of $150 bucks AGAIN to reactivate! I need to leave town for a few months to care for an aging parent up north. I stopped the monthly $60 fee charge until I return. I learned however that when I come back I'll need to again pay the $150 enrollment fee to begin again That's not right. I was thoroughly disappointed with my first, and hopefully last YMCA experience. I signed my daughter up for gymnastics, and when I arrived on the first day, the ladies at the desk told me I was in the wrong place (I never got a notification that the class was moved) She told me to go half a mile up the road and the gym where the classes were would be on the left behind the Burger King. I went up to where the Burger King is (not a half mile), and the gym was not there. So I called. And the lady that answered couldn't tell me the address, give me directions, or even remember the name of the gym. Luckily she remembered the Subway I was supposed to make a left at, and I figured out the rest via Mapquest. When I arrived at the gym noone was at the desk, and there were no signs for where to go. I waited 10 mins, before someone came to the desk. When I finally made it into the class, I was appalled to learn that there was no structure. The "teachers" put out a bunch of mats and the parents were supposed to go around with the kids and use them. For what I don't know. I never did gymnastics, how would I know what to use each mat for? Isn't that supposedly what I paid to have an instructor show us. Then, I saw the teacher putting out puzzles. In a gymnastics class. When I mentioned that I was confused about how puzzles were part of gymnastics, the instructor told me some children don't have puzzles at home. That's like going to a restaurant and ordering a beer, and getting Diet Coke instead. Yes, some people may not have Diet Coke at home. But I ordered a beer. So, hand it over. I cannot say strongly enough that I would NEVER recommend the YMCA gymnastics program. read more

We have tried several gyms in the area and have finally found our "home." It's incredibly convenient location is just one of the many reasons why we like it. It's also friendly, and the equipment is newer and in great condition. The locker rooms are great. (The the hairdryers ready to go in there!) I have never had to wait to use a treadmill or elliptical- even during peak times- something I can't say for any other gym I've ever been a member of. The classes are excellent. Such a wide variety. I haven't used the pool yet, but hear good things. I enjoy the indoor track. Yes, it's small but great on cold/wet/miserable weather days when you just want to keep moving. One of the many reasons that my husband and I chose the YMCA over other area gyms was because of the wide variety of people who use it. We love that kids and parents work out together, that people ages 13-80+ are there, and that people at any level of fitness come to the Y. I'm sure many of you know how special that is. Isn't it funny that they can increase the cost of your membership and the amount they withdrawal from your bank account without my signature, but because I signed something 10 years ago that allows them up to 30 days from date of cancellation to take more of my money, they withdrawal that money on the 29th day. To run salt in the wound, the managers I spoke too in a useless effort to recoup that money were rude and condescending. Very disappointed with the way a particular staff at the front desk. She seemed bothered by my questions....when all the staff got together, they began to fight with each other. The older lady seemed to be the one who was in a really bad mood and snapping at everyone. They should be friendly to people and making them feel comfortable and welcomed, after all the Ymca is a family gym. I am coming from another YMCA, and they were so nice. I have been a member of this YMCA for 15 years. The only motivation that keeps me coming is the distance from my house, the cost, and the wonderful fitness classes (RIPPED, Body Pump, Pilates, etc.) taught by great personal trainers. Also, I do enjoy the upstairs track. However, the weight lifting area is absolutely sub-par. God forbid you venture in for a workout at a prime time...you are lucky to even have breathing room with the cluster of people all scrambling for the couple of machines they have available. Also, the TV's attached to the fitness machines never have volume that works. Finally...other than the personal trainers, the staff at the Y is, to put it bluntly, rude and unwilling to hear out any complaints you may have. Rarely do I ever get a hello when I check in at the front desk, and each time I have confronted one of the managers about an issue, I have been met with hostility and resentment. If group fitness classes aren't a big priority for you, I would highly recommend joining Sport and Health if you have the budget to do so. read more

Super convenient. Well maintained. Always helpful. I like to ride my bike or jog from the facility and take a shower before heading back to work. Although the pool hours in the summer are a little inconvenient due to swim camps its still the best deal around. And it promoted community. I feel my dues are going to good causes. read more

I just had the WORST experience with the staff and supervisors of the YMCA. I have been a member for the past 10 years or so. My sons have all played T-Ball there, my daughter has danced and just started gymnastics. We have always had a great time, but the other day an incident occurred and was handled so poorly, that I have terminated my membership immediately. My nanny, who is on our family membership, took my kids to the Y the other day to play. Due to some clerical error, her pass was coming up expired, despite the fact that she had just had it reissued about a month ago. The lady at the front desk, Debbie, for some reason, did not believe my nanny and continued to argue with her that her membership was expired for over 30 minutes! My nanny said she was extremely condescending to her, even making fun of the fact that she has a very strong Colombian accent. She kept telling my nanny that she could not be on my account because she does not live with me. My nanny kept telling her that yes, she does live with me. Her driver's license has my address on it. At one point, Debbie turned to my six year old, to try and prove my nanny was lying, and asked him who she was to him. He responded that she used to be his Au Pair, but now she is his nanny (because she is no longer with the Au Pair company). With that, she turned to my nanny and said "See, you don't live with them!" My nanny kept asking her to please call me and speak to me and I would confirm that the pass was new and that she lives with us. Finally, my nanny called me and begged her to speak to me. She did not want to, but finally reluctantly got on the phone. She was rude and condescending to me, too. She kept telling me that I could not have my nanny on our account. I kept trying to explain to her that I have been doing this for years. I asked her to look at the paperwork I had filled out a month earlier. She told me there was no paperwork. Finally, she begrudgingly told me that she would give my nanny a temporary pass and when the person in charge of setting up the accounts returned, they would look into it, but that I would need to come in and fill out all the paperwork again. When I got home and found out how awful she had been to my nanny, I decided it needed to be addressed. Before speaking with them, though, I wanted to make sure I had all the facts correct. I spoke with my six year old and my ten year old each separately. They each told me the EXACT same story of Debbie asking my six year old who the nanny was to them. Both children described Debbie as "mean." The next day my husband and I met with two supervisors. At first they were very nice, but before I could even start with what had happened, one of them proceeded to tell me that she had reviewed the video of the front desk and, at no time did any of the staff interact with my children. I realized, at that point, that she was more concerned with disproving my claims rather than getting to the bottom of what happened. I went on to explain what happened. When I was telling them what was said to my nanny, she became defensive again and said that Debbie would never say that. At the end, they told me they would speak with Debbie and "if" she had said those things, it would be addressed. I realized at that point that the whole meeting had been pointless. I, of course, got a follow up email that Debbie denied behaving this way. Although, it did acknowledge that the video showed that it took Debbie 30 minutes to resolve things with my nanny. If she had believed what my nanny was telling her, it should have taken about 5-10 minutes. It also was determined that, despite what the video showed, another staff member said she had spoken with my kids about the fair. I had already known this from my kids. They told me that lady was nice. So, apparently, the videos don't capture everything...most importantly, audio. So, I was basically told that me, my nanny and my two children are all lying and the only thing Debbie did wrong was to take a little too long resolving the issue. My poor sweet nanny said she didn't want to accuse Debbie of being racist, but she definitely felt like the fact that she had such a thick accent and that, when she gets nervous, her English gets a little confused, had a lot to do with why Debbie treated her the way she did. I am sad, because my kids really liked going here, but I refuse to support a place that would strive to disprove a customer's complaints and tell them that they are the ones that are lying, rather than address the problem. We had nothing to gain by lodging this complaint. Debbie had everything to lose by admitting such behavior. Rather than asking her "if" it happened, they should have just counseled her outright that such behavior is not going to be tolerated. End of story! read more

I adore this place. I find everybody, both staff and clients, to be very friendly and always willing to help or engage in conversation. I come here mostly to swim, and the pool, although I agree that it is problematic in the summer due to all the kids, to be big, wide, and spacious enough to comfortably swim without constantly bumping into another swimmer. I used to swim at Sport & Health, where the pool is very small and hard to do laps in. Also, I have serious and costly medical issues, and the Y went out of their way to assist me financially so that I could use their facility and ensure that I could continue to improve my health. I simply do not understand the negative reviews, as this is a very welcoming environment for all in the community to use. I do not know where else I could comfortably swim in Frederick at such a reasonable price. I always feel comfortable and relaxed here, which I cannot say about many gyms I have frequented in the past. read more
