I was really looking forward to getting a special cake for my son's birthday. I'm not sure if my expectations were unclear or if they couldn't read the handwriting on the invoice, but I ordered a two layer round birthday cake with a Sonic the hedgehog cake topper. I was asked if I wanted a cake topper or a printed picture and I specified cake topper. The man on the phone was very friendly and helpful, and he repeated my order back to me correctly. The price seemed a little steep but having seen other cakes on the yelp page and website, I figured it was going to be a creative topping on the cake. I picked it up on the day of my son's birthday, and there was no topper, just a printed photo. When I looked, I was fairly disappointed to just see the printed picture but I couldn't read the invoice so I figured they probably couldn't either and there must've been some confusion. It smelled really great so I figured the taste would make up for the lack of creativity. Unfortunately, despite the great smell, the chocolate was underwhelming and flavorless. The cake was very thick and dense and the frosting was too thinly spread, dry and tasted mostly like powdered sugar. Happened to Yelp cupcakes while in Kapolei as it was our son's birthday and Cupcake and Things Bakery popped up just a mere 3 minutes from where we were. What luck and did that ever turn out to be perfect. I bought a dozen mixed cupcakes, cookies n cream, chocolate raspberry, chocolate mint, etc. and brought them home. It was our son's 25th birthday so I got them in 2 separate 1/2 dozen containers. We all shared a few from the first batch and he took the second container to share with his friends he would be seeing a later. Well, here's how damn good these exceptional little tastes of heaven were, I received a text from him a few hours later asking where I had gotten them because every one of friends wanted to know where they came from. NOTE: this review will mostly be about my wedding cake experience! This place is a dessertaholics dream come true!! This place only sells desserts and they are all amazing!! The moment you walk in, you are surrounded by desserts in the case, desserts in the fridge, and desserts on the shelves. Each time I came in during my cake ordering and tasting process, we would have to try something. My favorite thing I tried was the Banana Chantilly Cake! The cake tastes like a light and fluffy version of banana bread and there's a thick layer of Chantilly frosting on top! If you love banana bread and Chantilly, you'll definitely love that cake! My friend who used to own her own bakery selected this cake for her baby shower! So, you know it has to be good! I've also tried their Lilikoi Bar (like a lemon bar but with lilikoi) and my hubby loved it! It's nice and tart with a yummy shortbread crust! We also tried the Bread Pudding. That tasted so good heated up. It was very moist and had lots of cinnamon flavor. As you can see from the photos, the slides are HUGE and are definitely enough for 2 people to share. They are around $6-7/slice but I mean, look at how massive they are! Now, on to my wedding cake experience! As I was searching for a bakery that made wedding cakes with delivery for a reasonable price, I came across this place! My wedding was originally supposed to be at Ko'olina so I wanted to find a bakery nearby. This place had super reasonable prices and delivered! Delivery to Ko'olina was only $25! The communication was mostly via email and Herbert was super responsive and helpful in helping me figure out what size cake and what flavors and fillings would taste good together. I set up a cake tasting and to my surprise, Herbert let us take home cupcakes that were the flavors we requested to try so we could really talk about what we liked and disliked in privacy. My hubby and I really appreciated that! Once I placed my order, and sent Herb a photo of how I wanted the cake to look, I was able to pay for my cake a week out from my wedding and dropped off the flowers I had selected to decorate with a couple days before. He can provide fresh flowers but, it's mostly limited to white or purple orchids. On the day of my wedding, Herb dropped off my cake on time/early and it was exactly what I wanted! Textured buttercream with flower accents. I was very happy with the final product and the cake itself was super moist and delicious! All my guests were able to enjoy it! I found Cupcake and Things via my trusty Yelp app. When I called to enquire about timelines, price, and other options, no one answered but, there was an option to email all enquiries. I emailed my request and received and call back the same day. The lady who called verified what I wanted done based on the details in my email, scheduled my pick up, and took my payment. Immediately I noticed the payment posted on my credit card. However, I was a bit skeptical that transaction was confirmed and she understood just what I wanted because I did not receive an email confirmation or any communication between the time I ordered and my pickup date/time. I had a late afternoon pickup but, the morning of pickup, I called to check if I could pick up earlier than scheduled. When I called, I was told that my order is complete and I could pick up earlier...I was still skeptical and leaving room for disappointment. ‍ I arrived at the store and the door was plastered with revised store hours and other covid-imposed restrictions (as is the norm these days). Inside there are multiple hand sanitizers available and a table between the customer and check-out register (to maintain physical distance). I let the employee know I was there to pick up my order. She disappeared briefly and came back with this beautiful cake...exactly as I had ordered. There were a whole spread of different cupcake flavours displayed which were hard to resist. In addition to my order, I also took home a 4-pack cupcake. It was hard to decide but, I ended up going with the guava (I wanted to try something different), coconut (I love coconut), lilikoi (my favourite fruit), and chocolate (you always need chocolate). The cake I ordered is red velvet but, I have not tried it yet to give an honest assignment on the taste. I tried each of the cupcakes - the lilikoi, coconut, and chocolate flavours we very distinct however, I could not really tell the guava flavour. The guava tasted like regular/ plain cake. I can't speak for the service or for the location because my sister-in-law bought these for me as a thank you, but the cupcakes are quite impressive. Some years ago, a cupcake place popped up on every corner, then it was donuts, then it was, I don't know, bobba or tea, or weird soft serve that's not not soft serve, who knows. Anyway, I'm glad I got to try these. Of the six flavors, the guava and lilikoi were the best. Good texture to the cake (light) and nice frosting. Not overly sweet. Then add on the up charge that the venue will charge for each cupcake, and it's not worth it. I can't see paying $6.50 per cupcake for my event. The man I spoke with was very kind and direct and informed me of costs, specifications, etc. I was told that I would have to provide my own decorations for what I wanted. After he spoke with the cake decorator, I was told the total cost would be around $108 because it would need three layers in order to accomplish the look that I wanted. Went with a 24 pack and picked 8 flavors. Boston strawberry, banana chantilly, peanut butter, snickerdoodle, mango, cookies n cream, chocolate mint and chocolate decadence. All though that was just 8 flavors, in my opinion the banana chantilly and snickerdoodle were the best. The other flavors were OK. Service was friendly although I wish salesperson was a little more honest. This was my first time using this bakery. I thought I would try them since I live on the Leeward side of the island. Sadly they got my order wrong. I provided a picture of a 2 tier yellow drip cake. When I arrived to pick it up. I had a single 2 layer round cake. I spoke with the decorator who also questioned the guy whom took my order about my request for a 2 tier cake. She was told didn't want 2 tiers...hello...my picture has 2 tiers!! The decorator agreed to add the second tier but I would need to come back. I returned 2 hours later. The cake looked amazing and was exactly what I requested. Here's the kicker...they charged me an additional $136 for their mistake!! I understand there's price difference between a single layer and 2 tier! They should've gotten it right or called back to confirm my request!! The additional cost wasn't mentioned when the decorator agreed to add the second tier!! The cake was burnt around the edges and dry!! I don't know if I would use them again based on my experience. Stopped in here last minute to grab me a birthday cake. I arrived and the place is nice, has alllll these really good looking desserts out. I asked what kind of cakes they had left over and asked which one was the best, the nice guy told me the strawberry vanilla cake was his fav so I brought it to the restaurant we were having my dinner at. We LOVED IT we were worried it was gunna be really sweet and dense but it was the opposite, it was light and fluffy and we loved how the frosting wasn't overly sweet. Found them on IG, wanted to try their baked goods since they looked so good in the videos. Service was great. Went on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm. Not much in stock in the dessert case and refrigerator. Thankfully there was one banana chocolate cake left, one lemon bar left and the sweet lady in the front went to the back and made me a chocolate chantilly cupcake (there weren't any displayed, I assumed they were all out). All three products weren't too sweet, which I liked. Chantilly cupcake was moist and filled with chantilly. Chocolate banana cake was moist, had good amounts of chocolate chips, and real banana flavor. While the lemon bar had an interesting texture (almost mochi like), it had thin crust and a subtle lemon flavor. Not your typical lemon bar, but still good, just different. Overall, pretty good place. I'm glad I tried it. Would definitely be back to try their other products. Looking forward to trying their carrot cake, other cupcake flavors, and crumb cake! read more
