Super late review but I'm just going to shoot from the hip here: This is basically one of the more* ridiculous things I've done. Honestly, it's outright fun and hilarious. I'd probably do it again. After you derobe and get your drink, you'll start feeling the pumpin' music and atmosphere in the large venue. You'll soon be caring less about what you're wearing (or lack there of) and just enjoy the company of 100s of other crazy half naked people in February. Most folks are in some sort of getup or costume. Fairies, Butterflys, teletubbies, lady gaga--- everyone has a little flair to their skivvies. When it comes time to leave the warm-as-hot-yoga club and venture into the NYC arctic, you'll be met with crowds of cheering fools. Passerbys on the street will be pointing, and standing there with mouths agape, but no need to worry. Everyone else will be cheering, high fiving and honking at you from their cars. It's worth it. Near the end of the event (post run in sub freezing weather), after everyone soaked up their adult beverages it was getting a little crazy... After we headed out, we ran into a guy sitting alone drinking at the bar who engaged us in some light conversation. He asked us if we came from Cupids run, thanked us and proceeded to tell us how he also signed up because he lost his child to cancer.... but then sort of glazed over how ridiculous it was inside and how he had to leave. Poor dude. I get it, there was a bit of a slutfest on the stage at one point (one girl making out and getting groped by multiple guys) but that didn't last too long. You just kind of giggle, roll your eyes and proclaim.. "awwright, time for another drink." Unless that's totally your thing -- then you should be asking for her number. Just a note for all ya'll that plan on coming next year. Bring gloves! Them digits get cold. Also, If you drive in, parking is more RIDICULOUS then the undie run itself. Especially if there's an event going on near the pier. Seriously, get there early. We spent 40 mins looking for parking and had to resort to some shady 'yo-meng-$30-to-park-here' type of lot 6 blocks away. Congrats to the Yelp team - 'Baby it's Yelp Outside' for raising so much money. You guys and gals are awesome! It was great meeting you all :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * Not the most. I once "swam" in the Van Wyck expressway. Yay for flooding.

I heard of this event/cause for the first time this year, thanks to an email from Leslie D. I guess NF (Nuerofibromatosis) is a somewhat underrated (for lack of a better term) affliction, mostly occurring in young children. While I've always donated to different causes in little ways in the past, I thought this was the chance to do something more specific, and in a bigger way. And I don't have any kids of my own to worry about, so why not try to help others' children. Cupid's Undie Run is pretty awesome because it's major fun, and I think encourages more people to donate because they know you will be running in mid-winter temps in your underwear. through the city streets. in broad daylight. O.O I hope awareness continues to grow so the Children's Tumor Foundation http://www.ctf.org/ can continue to get the help they need to do the research to be able to help these poor kids. I've decided to take this event on every year now, to do something positive, that is positively fun at the same time.

I haven't seen so many men walking around in their underwear since that time I accidentally walked into that club in Hell's Kitchen....... Unmmm yes, by accident........... What a day and all for an amazing cause, the children's tumor foundation! Raising close to $1,200 myself, tons of money was donated to research. When I first got to the event, there was a bit of a wait. Why tell us noon, if you're not going to be ready at noon? Once inside it was time to change. White sneakers, red high socks, red briefs and a red bandana. The dance floor and 2nd floor were filled with tons of people in great costumes. My favorite was the couple as Thor and Wonder Woman. There were some people who wore very little while they probably could have out a shirt back on. My one quarrel was the creepy press, harassing you for a picture every ten seconds. In the end though, it didn't matter. It was time to get a little sloppy. A two hour open bar before the start of the run was what the doctor ordered to embrace the cold conditions. Once game time rolled around we were all pumped. The run was a breeze and lots of fun. One of those creepy photographers was on all knees, trying to get some shots, in the middle of the race. I let him get a good one when I hurdled over him. Once back inside it was time to drink some more. Got my drink on and a little grub. Amazing time, great event. All for a wonderful cause. I'll be back next year!!!

    This way for laughs!

It begins with that chilly Central Park feeling and then gradually opens into a brighter, faster day, with the city almost seeming to bloom around the race. I set a PR there, although I was unfortunately wearing my former colleague Adam's bib; oh well, I got the picture, the Strava record, and the memory, which is what matters. The course has a rare sense of momentum because it feels like actual travel, not just a loop, and the ending through the Battery Park Tunnel is epic, strange, and completely New York in the best possible way. Running across the Brooklyn Bridge alone makes the race worth it; it's an unforgettable moment. The course itself is on the hilly side, with rolling hills and the bridge, so it's probably not the best choice if you're chasing a PR. But if you're looking for an amazing sightseeing run through some of New York's most iconic streets, this is the one. Everything leading up to the race was organized really well, from packet pickup to race-day logistics. It's absolutely worth applying for the lottery. The festivities started with the introductions of the local officials, a monk to bless the fleet and the eye dotting ceremony to "awaken the dragon". Each team had their encampments along the shore with their tents, banners and brightly colored uniforms. From then on, the teams were on the water all day for some intense competition, paddling their butts off. The boats out on the water were a fair distance away and were hard to track, but each boat came back to a rousing round of cheers! The festival would not be complete without some great food from vendors serving some tasty Asian dishes. Potstickers, teriyaki chicken bowls & spicy pork skewers were some of the stolen bites I got from my wife. But I was racing, so I couldn't load up on food or I would've chummed the bay. Entertainment was provided all day by local dance & choral groups, and a lion dance demonstration by a martial arts troop. The highlight was Hsu-nami, a erhu band that rocked the stage! We didn't win a medal, but it was an exhausting and exhilarating day! Can't wait for next year.

I ran it in 2013, 2015, and 2016, and each year felt different while still carrying the same impossible charge. From a runner's perspective, it is not really a personal best course; it is a 26.2 mile victory lap through the five boroughs. The hills, bridges, crowds, quiet stretches, and late-race suffering make it punishing, but they also make it unforgettable. What stays with me most is the sensory swing of the course. The silence on the Queensboro Bridge, broken only by footsteps and breathing, turns into that roaring wall of sound as you come down onto First Avenue. The course demands discipline because it is easy to get carried away in Brooklyn and pay for it later in Central Park. Then comes Marathon Monday, when the city seems to recognize every limping runner in a medal or blue poncho, and for one more day the whole thing feels shared. Highly highly recommended!
