Looking for a yummy lunch on your trip through the UP? With limited options, we back tracked to get lunch at Curious Pig and I am glad we did. We pulled up to the restaurant on a Tuesday mid afternoon and were pleasantly surprised by the entire experience. Service was friendly and welcoming. I don't think I've been to a cleaner restaurant. Ever. The food... being from Texas we are bbq snobs. And this bbq did not disappoint especially considering its location up north. From the 5 sauces given to us which were labeled (loved this so we could remember which was which), the creamy mac and cheese to the perfectly seasoned pulled pork, everything was so good. The ribs were nicely sauced and perfectly tender. We split a 2 meat (pilled pork and 3 ribs) with 2 sides ( mac and cheese and chili (up-charge)). The portions were generous and well priced. Re-route your trip, and stop by the Curious Pig! You won't be disappointed. read more

Updating my review. The good - the ribs are amazing, the brisket chili is so good, and the cornbread is yummy. The Mac and cheese looks delicious but is ok, not much flavor. The BBQ baked beans are ok. The hush puppies & pimento cheese appetizer was ok. The hush puppies were dry and bland. The pimento cheese was good though. The bad - the Rueben sandwich. The meat was good but it was just huge chunks, not shaved. I could not eat the sandwich or enjoy it. It all just fell apart. Disappointing. I wanted to say something but the owner did not seem overly friendly or wanted to bother talking to us. I will go back but just order a meat platter or ribs. read more

Servings are a great size. Sweet tea is on point. The meat was well cooked but only smoke flavor. You have to get a sauce to get it to task like anything. The mild sauce still had some spice to it. Great for some but too much for me. So if you don't like spice and are just looking for a sweet traditional BBQ sauce this is not for you. Service was friendly and quick. read more

My brother and I were ona weekend vacation together in Crystal Falls. The Curious Pig was recommended highly at the MichiAho resort so we decided to go and have a dinner there. The building is a converted home and they have indoor and outdoor seating. It was a pleasant evening so we decided to go outside. Our server was very friendly and got our lemonade quickly. I ordered the half rack of ribs and for my two sides I chose coleslaw and their Macaroni and cheese, which is very good. My brother asked for the two meat dinner, choosing sausage and brisket. I know he had baked beans, but forgot what his second side was. Once we ordered the meals, our server brought the food within 5 minutes. So everything was a good temperature. 3rd year in a row we've stopped in at The Curious Pig during our annual family reunion (last year they were at the state fair so technically it's our 4th year) The minute you get out of the car the smell of bbq floods your senses in anticipation! Once again, we were not disappointed. Ribs are so, so good - fall off the bone tender with a good kick of spice! Corn pudding is outstanding (sells out a lot) and the bbq beans are excellent! First time here. Nice place, our server Bev was spot on without being overwhelming. Don't think they had the heat on inside, thank god we'd dressed warm for a chilly, damp U.P. day. Started out with the hush puppies and pimiento cheese, very nice flavor and an ample order. Each in our party ordered the Carolina Pork sandwich. Was a healthy portion but think they forgot to add the bbq sauce. Was tasty and flavorful but would have better with sauce. Got the coleslaw as a side, that too was tasty. My boss and i were in the area doing campaigning and while we were knocking doors all we could smell was Curious Pigs. We ordered hushpuppies as an appetizer and they were half frozen. I got the smoked sausage and ribs which was a little warm when I got it and only got 6 small pieces of sausage, they flavor was alright though. The portions were small for the price you pay. Who knew the UP had such good BBQ. Plenty of burgers and pasties to be found in the area so this was a very pleasant surprise. It's a quaint little older home that is not a restaurant. Our GPS had us a few blocks in the wrong direction but we drove around until we found it. I'm sure glad we did. The burnt end, bacon was really good. The ribs were seasoned well and the mashed potatoes had plenty of the good stuff to make it taste amazing without gravy. The star for me was the moist brisket. It's hard to get amazing brisket with good bark that's not too dry. I didn't even need sauce but did sample a few. his charming setting looked like a great place to enjoy some alfresco dining on a Friday evening. The aroma of smoking meat wafted across the air, the menu was filled with delicious-sounding items and our mouths were watering in anticipation. We started with an appetizer of hush puppies and waited ~25 minutes to receive them after asking server when they would be ready. (Her response: "they're about to go in"). Half the hushpuppies were luke-warm to cold; a few were hot enough to have been very recently prepared. The creative pimento cheese spread along side was very tasty. Almost an hour after placing dinner orders (2 of us) we asked server about the food's progress. Response was: "We go hit with a lot all at once. We have to do the online food orders first" (ahead of the in-house diners). Again, brisket was cold, pulled pork was barely warm. No barbecue sauce was offered as it had been to other diners. We shared our concerns with our server who promised to convey our feedback. We were never contacted by the manager or chef and really wonder if our concerns had been shared. We love the PIG and the owners...Home cooked recipes from scratch and best smoked BBQ and sauces for hundreds of miles. LOVE the corn pudding and variety of desserts. Never had pecan pie so good and it sells out fast. The pizza is from scratch and wood fired with lots of variety and flavors. I miss this place. Used to work here. There is no BBQ like it nation wide, maybe worldwide. I'm sure of it. I literally think about visiting just so I can eat here. Beautiful restaurant with great outdoor seating. I'm a vegetarian and there were several things on the menu for me. I got the grilled mac n cheese sandwich, minus the pulled pork. It was incredible. Picked up takeout this afternoon. I've had a lot of excellent BBQ across the country, and this is top notch. So happy they opened in Crystal Falls. Iron County needs excellent restaurants like this. The platter with brisket and pulled pork was great. I normally don't eat Mac and cheese, and planned on giving the side to my kids, but it was just too good! The potato salad side was equally awesome. The wife had the smothered brisket sandwich and loved it as well. Lucky for me she couldn't eat it all, and I happily took care of it. Love the building and outdoor dining. The waitress was very good and very attentive. We stopped for lunch and ordered the hush puppies and pimento for a started and a three meat platter to split. The platter consisted of brisket, pulled pork, ribs, Mac & cheese, beans, and cornbread. Where to start... the beans were very smoky tasting (more than I care for) the Mac & cheese was also smoky tasting but I enjoyed it. The cornbread was phenomenal. The pulled pork was very good, the brisket was 75% fat and probably shouldn't have been served. The ribs had good taste but was extremely dry (I wondered if left from the day before). The hush puppies and dip were the highlight. We love this type of food, and are sad to say don't plan to eat here again. read more

We came up here on a camping trip at the state park and decided to have one good meal before leaving to go back to Illinois. The brunch was fabulous. The "battle over the radio stations" was pretty funny as we heard current rock and roll, then it changed to "oldies but goodies" back to rock and roll. (The DJ gave out different radio call signs, so it was two different stations as I guess parents vs. the younger generation vied for control of the radio.) The location is a large restored house in the small town of Crystal Falls. They have a nice outdoor eating area for those rare warm UP days - the inside is OK especially the upstairs that has several nice areas for a more private dining experience. The main dining area downstairs is a bit claustrophobic with a somewhat overwhelming knotty pine decor - the bar is basically non-existent (tiny). Tip - If you eat in the downstairs main dining area - don't sit near the stairs or you will have other diners and staff in your face as they descend. No liquor served yet even after several months of operation. The smoked meats have an excellent smoke flavor. For my palate, the pulled pork could be more aggressively seasoned and was a touch dry. My wife really enjoyed the barbecued ribs. The pizza is good especially the ones featuring the various smoked meats. The well-cooked crust is thin but not cracker-crust thin. The side choices are nice especially their unique potato salad and beans. Warning: you will be upcharged for some of these sides even though many of the dinners include two sides! No butter or similar alternatives are offered for the bread that came with my most recent meal. Presentation is lacking with flimsy PAPER plates and ridiculous over-sized utensils. With no adult beverages available, one is stuck with water or over-priced lemonades/teas with no refill offered. Service is as expected for the Northwoods - OK but not professionally trained. No manager or owner worked the tables to talk to the customers about their experience. The Crystal Falls area desperately needs a restaurant or three beyond the local greasy spoon and bar/pizza places. With a few tweaks and a liquor licence, this place could become a destination. In the meantime, I intend on using it as a takeout and occasional lunch place when I'm in the area. read more
