Having been in the beauty industry for the last 18+ years and growing up in a salon since I was 6 years old, I'm very picky. I've had my hair cut by a former salon coworker for the last 8 years, but the COVID situation has put a strain on a lot of businesses and norms. I hadn't had a hair cut in about 16 months and knew it was time to accept I had to find someone new. I wanted a curly hair specialist because my hair is very spoiled and I treat it with love. Moisture, no heat, satin pillowcases, coil hair ties, etc. I saw Charley today, and it's like he already knew my hair. He dry cut it like I'm accustomed to having it cut. If you are wanting anything beyond a simple trim, I do not recommend this place. What I saw was not someone experienced with curly hair. My hair was cut by Charlie. I came in with my hair styled probably the best I've ever done, I've been working for years to find the right routine for me and my hair type, and I put my hair in the trust of this place. As soon as I sat down and explained what I wanted, my hair was wet and combed out then cut like any other normal haircut. No special treatment was given to my curls. After that some gel was slapped in until I felt like I had a slug on my head and I was stuck under a dryer. From what I could tell, an average hair dresser was given a quick class in the basic curly method, just to toss it out the window. I am so upset with how different it looks from anything I asked. I got WAY more hair cut off than I wanted and now I look like a squire from medieval times rather than the cute, simple, girly cut I asked for. Be careful people. read more

I want to preface this by saying I wasn't planning on posting this because I was made to feel like what happened was because I had a vivid color on my hair according to Emily, one of the stylists. Now I know that was not the case... I went in with vivid purple (faded enough to cover) and just wanted an all over color understanding that it would need to be a darker color to cover. I was okay with that but just didn't want to go black. 1st, the color she suggested looked black to me and when I voiced this Emily said it wouldn't look like that on my hair. She was wrong. It was jet black. I should've known that wasn't possible for the color to not be black on my hair but I trusted the stylist. Had I trusted my gut or had she told me it would be black then I would've just waited to get my sister in law (a color specialist in Dallas) to do the color correction. 2nd, when I got home I noticed SEVERAL pieces on the top layer were not colored at all. There was purple and blonde showing through. I thought that my hair just didn't take the color and that's what Emily made me feel like was the issue. Emily suggested I put an even darker color on my hair which I didn't want to do. Emily suggested a colorist in the area but I felt off about it all so I showed my hair to my sister in law (a stylist for about 14 years now and a color specialist) and she assured me that in her experience doing vivids, color corrections and cover ups that there should've been no issue covering the purple. She says what actually seems to have happened is Emily either got lazy with application on my top layer (there is no issue with other layers) or she ran out of color and didn't want to open another tube of color. This is such poor service and Emily took no ownership for what she did to my hair, making me believe that it was somehow my fault. I give this two stars because the cut she did was fine and they did refund me the cost of the dye job. read more

I've been seeing Kylie for about 2.5 years, and each hair cut I've had has been better than the last. This is the place for women with curly hair who want to have curly/wavy hair! I've been getting curly haircuts/DevaCuts for about 7 years with different salons. When I moved to Austin from a very dry climate I had a terrible time getting my hair to work with the humidity. Kylie got me squared away with product and a haircut that works no matter what weather (OK on misty/really humid days I still rock the messy bun, but what can you do?) I usually get my haircut every 3 months. With Kylie my hair always looks fabulous even at the 12 week mark--the shape really holds up! When I style it myself it does look different than when I leave the salon (I usually get more coils and fewer waves at home) but both look lovely. Plus, Kylie *always* tells me to give her a call if, after a few days of styling it myself, something is looking weird. read more

Absolutely love my curly haircut by Sherry! From the start, she was kind, collaborative, and really listened to what I wanted. She checked in several times throughout the appointment to make sure we were still on the same page. I have been to several curly hair salons and this has been my favorite! I walked out loving my hair and feeling taken care of. Plus their prices are much more affordable than other curly hair salons, but this does not reflect any difference in quality of services or products. Zero Stars. I don't trust these people as "curly experts." NOT RECOMMENDED Stylist: Emily (sweet personality) Service Request: Trim, reshape the perimeter (the shape of the hair all along the bottom), cut my long layers, face-framing Hair type: I have long curly hair that reaches my lower back. Bottom line: Go elsewhere. I don't think the following issues are fully Emily's fault. I blame her teacher and owner of Curly Hair Austin, Ethan, assuming that everything Emily did was part of what she was trained to do. Ethan is the one who spoke to me when I complained and refused to acknowledge my hair issues. Emily cuts too conservatively. I communicated exactly what I wanted, I even showed her a reference picture of my own hair to show the general shape I wanted. We had a great conversation as I explained what I wanted. She seemed like she understood and even verbally explained what she was going to do. But then didn't do it well. Here are all my issues with the service: 1. The hair washing was the worst I've experienced. For the first time ever, I was left with build-up that I could visibly see. I don't have dandruff and I'm had detoxed my scalp the week prior. Therefore, there shouldn't have been flakes after a wash. She didn't wash thoroughly. I thought this was so weird, but that wasn't my main concern. 2. I wanted a wet cut with a touch-up done on dry hair, but Emily said that they do most of the cutting when the hair is dry... That's interesting considering that the website says that a haircut can be done wet, dry, or a mixture of both. Since it was my first time I trusted her to still cut what I wanted. Very Very little hair was cut off. So little that I still had split ends afterward. I even verbalized that she should cut off 3 inches to shape the hair if needed. She cut less than an inch. Very little hair was on the floor. 3. My layers were not cut. So my hair was still being weighed down. (as shown in the second picture) 4. I had short pieces at the front of my head, but they weren't blended into the rest of my hair. She barely touched that area. It looked absolutely unchanged. (not shown in pictures) 5. She diffused my hair HORRIBLY. Anyone who diffuses correctly knows not to diffuse the ends first!!!! She just dumped the ends of my hair into the diffuser... That resulted in a horrible curl pattern, extremely dry ends, and a wet scalp. 6. After re-washing my hair to remove the build-up and restyling, I was really about to see how uneven she cut my hair! (photos for reference) 7. I felt like I was scammed out of my money. I've never had a bad experience at a salon before, and I've never complained to a salon. I felt really awkward about saying anything. After a lot of thinking, I decided to reach out and ask for a partial refund (not including tip). The owner, Ethan, gaslighted me and said that my results looked like my reference picture and refused any refund. Yet, he said that I could go back to get it fixed. Why would I trust them to fix the issue after they told me that there was no issue??? That made no sense. I truly believe that a partial refund was appropriate here. 8. I sent these photos to other hairstylists to get their opinion and they said that the difference was obvious. Their comments were focused on the perimeter of my hair. That was extremely validating. 9. I went to get my hair cut properly at Nova Hair Collective with Sophie. Love her work. She's so precise and knows how to style curly hair. I highly recommend her! Note about the pictures: - the reference photo was just a reference for the perimeter. I had other simple requests that weren't done. - the results photos were taken the day after the haircut after I re-washed and re-styled it. You can see the unevenness very clearly. My layers are almost non-existent, as the top of my hair is being weighed down. - I included my message to Ethan after he insisted that my hair was fine. I got my first haircut with Ethan today and he worked magic on my hair. I had curls that were very loose and before my haircut were very limp and dry. After the haircut my curls are bouncier than ever. He showed me how to style my hair and talked me through everything so I can achieve the same look he gave me today everyday. This hair cut felt like it was suited special for me which is nice as I've never had one specifically for my hair type. I will definitely go back for my next hair cut. I'd like to add my original appointment was with Emily but before my scheduled appointment she had an emergency come up and Ethan and Kylie both offered me times to make up the appointment I am so thankful for their flexibility to be able to help out a fellow stylist it really made me feel like I was valued to them. I came in for an appointment with Kylie needing to get a small trim and reshape. I wanted to keep my hair long because I don't like having short curly hair with my face shape. So while she did show me how much she would take off, which wasn't that much (appx. 3"), my cut ended up being WAY shorter. She cut the initial 3" off, then washed and continued to cut my hair while it was wet. Shrinkage was not taken in to account. When styled, my hair length went from the center of my back to the shortest layer being above my shoulders. Not enough product was put into my hair; so when it did finish drying, there wasn't a defined shape or curl, just a mass of frizz. Right after the appointment, I ended up buying more product to style at home and a clip to tame the short layers. I had higher expectations honestly. I am definitely not happy with this cut or with the lack of styling. Kylie is very personable and nice, and does ask questions on how you want the cut, but she cut off way too much, and forgot to account for shrinkage. Had she not taken off so much length, the cut would have been great. But at the end of the day, what a client cares most about is the cut and style; in my case I feel very disappointed. read more

It is not easy to cut my short curly hair but Emily at Curly Hair Austin did an amazing job. She completely understood how to give it a nice flow that framed my face. Do not go to Curly Hair Austin. I tried them a few times during the pandemic. They claimed they knew how to work with ethnic hair but they used terrible products and got my hair all matted and tangled. The hair dye bled all over my home for weeks and my hair felt so dry. And they don't know / do anything about protective styles for people with super curly hair. I had to chop it all off and it still hasn't grown back yet. read more

My hair was completely over-processed, dry, and limp. I have extremely course, thick hair that requires special care to look decent. This was by far the best hair cut I've ever received. I've been curly my whole life but just had my first cut by a curly-hair specialist last week. I saw Kylie, she did a great job and love it! I think lots of curly people get cuts by any random stylist and just sort of deal with it not being quite right because curls mask a lot of flaws. That didn't happen here. It was a very intuitive hair cut and I just love the way my hair turned out. It's a small salon but easy to get to, the price is reasonable, and Kylie was really sweet and knowledgeable. read more

If they were charging $25 I wouldn't mind so much that she didn't really cut my hair at all and that she didn't actually style it either aside from sitting me under a dryer for 10 mins then running some product threw my still wet hair and me leaving the shop with damp hair and a damp t-shirt. Seriously? I style my hair the same way when I hop out of the shower and I'm running late for something. I wouldn't mind that there was no scalp massage and that the unnecessary small talk consisted of her telling me coloring hair was her real passion if I didn't still need to get a hair cut after. Nathan taught Kylie so she is a reflection of him. She charges $60+tip and he charges $80+tip. There are much better options in Austin within that similar price range. It's fun to try new places but there's always risk involved and I'm writing this review to let you know you might want to keep looking unless you're just dying for someone else to wash your hair because you're sick of doing it. read more
