We're getting ready to travel abroad (New Zealand and Australia) in March, so while we've been watching the fluctuating exchange rates, we pulled the trigger and went online with CXI to reserve our AUD and NZD. At the same time, we also noticed that CXI Pearlridge Center had moved from its Wai Makai (formerly Downtown) kiosk to a more secure brick-and-mortar storefront at Uptown (formerly Mauka), Level 1, in between JHL Jewelry and Macy's, near Pieology. After we placed our order, we were notified within 2 days to pick it up. We were instructed to bring our passports, SSN, and government-issued ID, and, if we wanted, we could complete our purchase using a debit card, a personal check, or cash to avoid the 3% additional credit card transaction fee. Also, because we weren't exceeding $2,999.99 USD, we weren't concerned with CXI's maximum credit card purchase policy. The cashier was as friendly and professional as we remembered, and we also congratulated her on having a newer, more secure location for her business. We're looking forward to our upcoming travels and feel confident knowing we have the right currencies for each country for "just because" purchases or tips.

I recently ordered yen from my bank and was told that it would take 3 to 4 weeks. That would be cutting it close for my next trip so I decided to try Currency Exchange In terminational in Pearlidge Mall. When I passed there recently there was signage in the entry stating that they have run out of yen. I guess I got lucky on my visit because I walked in and 5 minutes later I walked out with my needed yen. I think I got about 166 yen to the dollar.

Nice, sometimes colorful currency at great rates here! (better than other places I've gone to on the island.)

My wife sometimes travels to Japan, and since the price of the yen is historically low right now…read morecompared to the U.S. dollar, she wanted to purchase a modest amount of Japanese yen. My first thought was to go to our regular bank, but after briefly thinking about it, I recalled how complicated things can become just to try to use their notary services. Upon checking, I confirmed that even for existing customers, buying a foreign currency may take several business days. Customers must visit a branch and "reserve" yen in advance, with the rate being determined on the day of reservation, and this service may not be available at all branches. I searched for a foreign currency exchange service and Currency Exchange International (CXI) stood out by being conveniently located in the International Market Place in Waikiki. We arrived at the Market Place just before 11 am, and having read a recent review placing them between Macy's and Pieology, I figured that Macy's would be easier to locate than the currency exchange. That's what threw off our search. There didn't appear to be an entrance to Macy's from where we were, so we had to go out to Kalakaua Ave. to reach Macy's, and the exchange was nowhere in sight. I did try to call the number but no one answered, understandable if the only person there was assisting customers. We went back into the Market Place and finally found it near the "Customer Service" sign and next to the escalator, and realized we had passed it before in our search for Macy's. When we reached the window, the gentleman was assisting a couple. I gathered they were purchasing currency by card, and that they were being asked to produce ID. After they received their currency and left, we were next, and I noticed someone else waiting behind us. At the window, I announced that I wanted to purchase Japanese yen and gave him the amount. He asked how I was going to pay, and I said "cash," and it seemed to be a straightforward process from there. He quoted the exchange rate he would be using, how much he would charge me for the currency, and the $5.00 exchange fee. I handed him the cash, and he passed back the Japanese yen and the receipt. Everything was smoothly executed. Later I had time to analyze precisely how the exchange worked. We were openly quoted an exchange rate, and by accepting, we agreed to it. The receipt had this disclaimer: "The exchange rate used for this transaction may vary from other exchange rates in existence globally." Using a rate which is slightly advantageous to the exchange and adding the exchange fee is how the business makes a profit. After comparing against other published rates, my feeling is that this was all worth it, given that we didn't need to make an appointment at a bank, for instance, and wait for them to obtain the currency. What might have taken days and involved an inconvenient location elsewhere was accomplished in a few minutes by going to CXI and paying cash.

Bank of Hawaii has long been loved as a major, and local, bank in Hawaii…read more I have been using FHB, another major bank in Hawaii, and I recently started using Bank of Hawaii. Compared to the bank I have been using for many years, the personal banker conditions are slightly looser, and you can easily consult about finance and trust. Also, there are a few Japanese people working as personal bankers, so it's reassuring. Of course, I'm used to FHB, which I've been using right after I moved to Hawaii, so I want to use both banks in the future. What I like about Bank of Hawaii is the Hawaiian-like lobby atmosphere. You can pass waiting time without getting bored because you can enjoy the interesting exhibitions and videos on display. It is not uncommon to see bankers with hair accessories such as hibiscus. When they say "Aloha" after concluding my business, I can't help but smile and return Aloha. I hope that you will continue to provide services that are typical of a local bank in Hawaii.

She then chose a huge folder and was able to find mine within seconds. Need to fill out a little form with name, date, box number and signature. Walked across tiny bridge into vault and did our double turnkey dance, then she asked if I wanted her to lift the box out for me and I happily said yes since it's kinda heavy. Maria set it on the table and told me to take my time. When pau, I replaced the box, took out my key and upon departure she asked if I needed parking validation.
