My wife sometimes travels to Japan, and since the price of the yen is historically low right now compared to the U.S. dollar, she wanted to purchase a modest amount of Japanese yen. My first thought was to go to our regular bank, but after briefly thinking about it, I recalled how complicated things can become just to try to use their notary services. Upon checking, I confirmed that even for existing customers, buying a foreign currency may take several business days. Customers must visit a branch and "reserve" yen in advance, with the rate being determined on the day of reservation, and this service may not be available at all branches. I searched for a foreign currency exchange service and Currency Exchange International (CXI) stood out by being conveniently located in the International Market Place in Waikiki. We arrived at the Market Place just before 11 am, and having read a recent review placing them between Macy's and Pieology, I figured that Macy's would be easier to locate than the currency exchange. That's what threw off our search. There didn't appear to be an entrance to Macy's from where we were, so we had to go out to Kalakaua Ave. to reach Macy's, and the exchange was nowhere in sight. I did try to call the number but no one answered, understandable if the only person there was assisting customers. We went back into the Market Place and finally found it near the "Customer Service" sign and next to the escalator, and realized we had passed it before in our search for Macy's. When we reached the window, the gentleman was assisting a couple. I gathered they were purchasing currency by card, and that they were being asked to produce ID. After they received their currency and left, we were next, and I noticed someone else waiting behind us. At the window, I announced that I wanted to purchase Japanese yen and gave him the amount. He asked how I was going to pay, and I said "cash," and it seemed to be a straightforward process from there. He quoted the exchange rate he would be using, how much he would charge me for the currency, and the $5.00 exchange fee. I handed him the cash, and he passed back the Japanese yen and the receipt. Everything was smoothly executed. Later I had time to analyze precisely how the exchange worked. We were openly quoted an exchange rate, and by accepting, we agreed to it. The receipt had this disclaimer: "The exchange rate used for this transaction may vary from other exchange rates in existence globally." Using a rate which is slightly advantageous to the exchange and adding the exchange fee is how the business makes a profit. After comparing against other published rates, my feeling is that this was all worth it, given that we didn't need to make an appointment at a bank, for instance, and wait for them to obtain the currency. What might have taken days and involved an inconvenient location elsewhere was accomplished in a few minutes by going to CXI and paying cash. read more

(Worker proceeds to count out my won.) #1 As a worker, HELLO is in order. #2 Speak in complete sentences please. If the customer is not understanding you and you are saying the same thing over and over, you need to rephrase what you're saying because obviously, you are not being understood. "Money exchange" will not register with a person who does not exchange currency on a frequent basis. I have been to this location before to pick up euro and had no problem with another male worker. I have a masters degree and my husband, who is a lawyer, was standing right there with a confused look on his face as well. Emotional intelligence goes a long way in customer service. read more

Not sure if I got ripped off traded 70$ in pesos plus a $2 euro coin and only got $5 back

I tried out this currency exchange to get some yen for my Japan trip since the one I used to go to in DFS is closed. Admittedly I procrastinated to the last minute, but I was fortunate enough that they had the amount of yen I wanted available on hand without having to place an order. They don't really advertise it, but this location will actually match any current rate from another bank on the spot. Just provide proof of the rate (I just googled around and showed the CPB rate which was a couple yen higher). That was what drew me to coming here and I feel like I got a slightly better deal. I came on 2 separate occasions to exchange all my money. The first time, a young man was working who was kind of quiet and didn't really say much the entire transaction. I wish he had been more thorough in going over everything. The second time though, the man working was very professional. He was very deliberate when counting out the cash which I appreciate when dealing with such a large amount. He also offered me an envelope that I didn't get the first time. I actually found out later that they also offer to waive the $10 fee if you follow them on Instagram. So I couldn't confirm if this location recognizes it but it's worth a try. I know they lose money from these things but it would be nice to advertise the various promotions they offer. read more

In the past I have ordered yen thru my bank CPB. They charge $10. I heard about currency exchange and heard good things. Currency exchange changes a $10 fee. Super easy to order online. Validated parking available, so parking is easy at international market place. I went to pick up my order four days after ordering online. The dollar had gotten stronger and I was able to get a slightly adjusted price to the current market value. So that's better than my bank. You exchange your dollars at pick up. I went there on Thursday to exchange USD for Yen, but they were sold out and he let me know they would have more the next day around 3-4pm. I came back the next day and exchanged yen and decided I wanted to exchange more after my transaction. They have an exchange fee of $10 so be sure to exchange everything you want! TIPS Definitely reserve your currency online before going in. They tend to sell out quick of Philippine Pesos. It takes 2-4 business days approx. to get your currency after reserving. They will send you a confirmation email and another email once it is ready for pickup. Bring a debit card or cash. If you use a credit card it will be considered a cash advance and you could result in fees from your bank. (24/25) Reviews before Christmas 2022! My experience at CXI was great! The process to exchange cash for another currency was mostly smooth and quick. The process is very exposing though, as you're in the middle of the mall and anyone can just run up to you and rob you, but other than that, the person helping us, Robert, was very nice. I'm not sure what rates as like for other currencies, but I exchanged USD for Yen and the transaction fee was $10 + their exchange rate. Obviously you're never going to be able to exchange money for the same rate that Google says the exchange rate is, but I felt that CXI was fair and I didn't have to deal with the annoyance of my bank taking 2-4 business days to exchange money at their non-published rates and overall the process was quick. I did hit some hiccups as I tried to reserve Yen online multiple times but CXI cancelled it due to a Yen shortage and there was 1 time where the kiosk was out of Yen for the day so I had to come back and fight the Waikiki traffic. But again, once the transactions went through, it was a smooth process! read more

They no longer waive the $10 extra exchange fee that is on top of the 5% fee that they are all ready getting for locals. So now you are getting two fees. They used to be the best place to exchange yen, but now they are not anymore. Go to one of the many other places in Waikiki for yen that don't have exchange fees. Or just get yen from a A.T.M. In Japan at a 711 you'll save $50 plus for every $1,000 you need. No need to go here unless they bring back the local discount. They are hurting themselves by not having the local discount anymore because I used to exchange $1,000's here, and I know at least half a dozen locals people that don't go here anymore so there losing a lot of money by taking away the local discount don't support their greed if you live here. They say it's market conditions? What market conditions! Nothing has changed they just want more money from us. read more

Currency Exchange International is probably the best place to exchange currency for your next trip abroad or exchange all your foreign monies that's been sitting in your drawer for US Dollars. This isn't a bank or a store. It's a small kiosk located on the first floor in the International Marketplace. It's beside the escalators and across the waterfall. They don't have validation for parking, so you'll need to spend $10 elsewhere for one free hour, or complete your transaction within 15 minutes from getting your parking ticket to the parking payment machine. I switched US dollars to Canadian dollars. If you're Kama'aina, and have your Hawaii ID, the service fee is waived. If not, check in on Yelp for 50% off! Transactions under $500 is a fee of $5 and over is $10. Their rates are really good and better than most banks. Plus, they have the cash on hand, so you can make the exchange right then and there. No need to make an order and wait several days at the bank. But I do recommend calling ahead first to make sure if you need less common currency. The lady helping us was friendly and courteous and helpful. I'd definitely recommend everyone to come here to exchange before your trip. NEVER exchange money at the airport! read more

Fast, efficient, friendly service. Parking at the International Marketplace (Waikiki location) is easy (plenty of spaces & not as tight parking spaces compared to the Royal Hawaiian mall parking across the street). The Waikiki Currency Exchange International desk is located just a few steps from the garage elevators. One hour of free validated parking is also provided. They only charge a $10 exchange fee (very reasonable) and often have the amount you need (for me, it's about $600 USD worth) the same day you reserve it. Still, it's best to reserve the amount you need online beforehand (they'll e-mail you when it's available). Though you can charge it to your credit card, they warn you that it will be treated as a cash advance (so it's not worth it for the points if that was your intention). Best to use a debit card or cash. Definitely will use them again. read more

I've come here for exchanging my currency prior to pandemic because they had decent exchange rates and gave a kamaaina discount (waived their $10 fee), which made the exchange rates better than my bank's rate. However, I came to exchange $ to Yen today and found out they no longer have the kamaaina deal. I reserved the yen online after I got the rate from my bank to make sure I was getting a good rate. Since I had to pay the $10 fee, I exchanged more than my reservation to make it worth it. In the end now, my bank would have given the better rate. I should have called before coming over to make the exchange, but still not a terrible rate, so I'm satisfied. read more

Needed some Vietnam Dong on short notice and CXI was able to provide it. Why the mediocre rating? Two reasons: 1. Horrible exchange rate We exchanged $350 USD for only 5.5 million VND. The true exchange rate means we should have gotten 8.1 million VND. Essentially, we lost $120 USD to their horrible exchange rate. Our fault for not checking. We have always used CXI for Yen and had a good rate, which is why we didn't bother to double check. Lesson learned. 2. Poor safety precautions I went to exchange my cash alone as a single woman. In the middle of my transaction, a shady man with a large bag stood literally less than 1 foot behind me and watched my transaction. I swear he even took a couple photos of my transaction/me using his phone. When you go to the bank and are dealing with money, do they allow other customers to stand SO close enough to see your transaction? NO. So why does CXI allow this? They have cameras, but what does that do? They can record someone who is about to rob you? It would be better for them to ask other customers to stand back. Overall, we are happy with CXI for yen. For other currencies, we will do a bit more research in the future. Also, we will always make sure we exchange cash in pairs/groups for safety reasons. read more

Going on a trip to Japan and wanted to buy yen. CXI made the transaction easy. They were very responsive, friendly and efficient. Very professional service. Great location, parking is easy and their business is centrally located in the marketplace. I Just felt a bit uneasy during the exchange because the counter is exposed in the marketplace- right in the middle of the ground floor. Just be aware, especially in the parking garage. But I guess there's a lot of security and cameras. My fee was not waived even though I am kama'aina; not sure about this. I got a great exchange rate from dollar to yen. I would recommend. Had left over yuan from my trip to Beijing so I finally decided to convert it back to US dollars. Not many places handle RMBs so I was happy to find Currency Exchange International. They are located at the foot of the escalator on the Kuhio Avenue side of the International Marketplace. They don't validate parking so if you can find street parking that's where I'd park. Three transaction is really quick (assuming you're the only one there). You can use the Yelp app to ask questions. They respond promptly. If you show local ID, they waive fee. I've used their services at Pearlridge on many occasions and never been disappointed. It's the most convenient (location and hours) for me. Workers are nice and helpful too. Just place an online order. You'll immediately receive a confirmation notification. I am not coming back here after my experience today! I have exchanged money here for years and they have always waived the exchange fee for kamaāina. Today they charged me the exchange fee and when I asked about it, they told me they had changed their policy. They did not notifying me about this prior to my transaction and I only saw it on the receipt after I had completed my transaction. If you are going to change your policy please notify your customers beforehand. This experience left me very upset. read more

This place will be our go to next time we need to exchange $ to Chinese RMB. It's located in the international marketplace on the first floor near Sak's, close to the escalator. The rates are reasonable and if you tell them you're kama'aina, they will waive the transaction fee. I checked with my bank American Savings and the fee is about the same but this place is a little better. Even more so if they waive the fee altogether! We called them before we came down to make sure they had the amount we wanted. Most were in large bills but there was also smaller denominations which is helpful. I guess you could ask for smaller in advance. They will exchange it back without a receipt but of course the rates aren't as good. We got our RMB for 6.7 rmb to $1; the exchange back as of today is 7.48. Service is friendly and helpful. Thumbs up for this place. read more

I am so glad I found Currency Exchange on Yelp! We just needed a small amount of Yen to give a friend as going away gift for his vacation. My banker, at one of the major local banks, told me it could take up to a 3 business days to come in, but that it could also take longer - depending on their "broker." The bank has to "order" the currency and you have to pay up front. If it comes in too late, you're stuck with it. In addition, the fee is outrageous - my credit union's fee was just as bad. I found Currency Exchange on Yelp and called. The man that answered the phone at this location was very nice and welcomed me to come in, even for a small amount. I went in later that evening. Bummer - he was on a break when I got there, but not a problem since there was a farmer's market going on. Perfect time to support local, which we definitely did. :) He was back, right on time! Had absolutely no problems. He was very helpful explaining the exchange rate and how much Yen I could get for my USD. We were done in less than 5 minutes. Awesome! I've never had a bad experience until today. Whichever girl worked the closing shift on April 3rd was not friendly. We came at 6pm and she said she cannot help us because the system had a black out and the two people in front of us are her last customers. We understood and walked away, but confused because all of her systems were on and working fine? Came back to go to our car at around 630pm and she was helping more customers exchange. So, we asked again and she frantically yelled that she cannot help us because she has too much to do while pointing at the money and exclaimed that cannot help us. Sketchy. They will charge you a service fee even if you show them you are a resident of Hawaii. I called and I had talked to the lady on the phone at 1710 asking if they did kama'aina discounts for no service fee she said "yes we do kama'aina discounts, just bring in your ID." I greeted her at 1730 and told her I was the one on the phone, I showed her my ID, she looked at it and she told me to put it away. I look at my receipt when I was back in my car, I was charged the service fee. When I called her out she said her boss told her it is policy that I had to verbally state again that I was a resident. She also gave me inaccurate information and told me during our interaction that 109. 37 US dollars equals 15,000 yen at 1700 on 11/10/22. But in reality it is 106.37 that equals 15,000 yen according to your receipt you gave me. Not even sure if the yen they gave me is real after this shady interaction. Please don't be dishonest. This foreign currency exchange counter is simply a Godsend for those who tend to procrastinate yet still expect the best deals. I had been planning a trip to Japan and did not realize that there would be different exchange rates from different locations and even moreso, some places may not even have the cash directly on hand. However, I had requested a quote through Yelp (thank you Yelp!) and was able to pick up the amount I needed within the next hour. The best part is that the exchange rates were one of the best from all the other locations I had contacted. The exchange itself was extremely easy and simple. Their counter is located in the international marketplace (next to the elevator near the Mitsuwa marketplace). The staff was very friendly and informative. All in all, the enter interaction took less than 5 minutes and I didn't have to pay for parking. This place had good reviews and I was thinking I'd change money with them. However in trying to use their contact us, I was told they didn't have enough yen in stock. Later someone responded again tell me to send an official request via their website. I did this requesting to pick up in 3 days. You don't get any confirmation if the request went through and if you can or cannot be accommodated with your timing. I ended up sending a second request to cancel since I did not hear back and needed the exchange. On the plus side, I'm sure it's very convenient to get here because you can park in the building. Unsure if they will validate for you. I believe kamaaina ID also gets you a discount on the fees. read more
