I would suggest making an appointment if you are exchanging over $1000 USD, which you would also need to provide your ID for tax/fraud purposes. The workers are very friendly and helpful. Their appointments were booked for over a week by the time I needed it by and they were able to squeeze me in for a sooner date. It is a small window located on Royal Hawaiian Ave. There is no parking so it's better to get dropped off, park in the nearest public paid garage around the corner or street metered parking. read more

A friend who frequently goes to Japan recommended Pacific Money Exchange for buying yen. I went on Saturday afternoon and it was 147¥. There was 1 person in line in front of me and only 1 lady was working that day. The lady mentioned they only give large bills so she adjusted the amount and gave me change in USD. The amount you give in USD, their exchange rate of the day, and what get in Japanese yen is on a receipt and she clearly explains it. If you exchange more than $1000 you need to reserve it 24 hours in advance and show your Hawaii ID. I tried to call them prior to driving down to Waikiki but no one answers the phone. There's no parking available on this street so I recommend parking at Royal Hawaiian Center walking a few blocks. They are located across the DFS Waikiki trolley stop and it's like a 5 minute walk. Great place to exchange money, especially American dollars to Japanese yen. I did not know this, but if you do a walk-in, the maximum you can exchange is up to $500. Other than that, you have to have a reservation and specify your much money you want to exchange. If you exchange $1000 or more, they require you to fill out a piece of paper, which notates your driver's license, amount, and SSN (for auditing purposes). It's incredible to hear and see how many have made trips to Japan these past few months...could it be due to the insane rates happening now, possibly though it's one of my dream destination planned or not when it's a great rate I do purchase some whenever possible...and it's the best place to do so. Located on Royal Hawaiian Avenue right across DFS and yes parking is the real struggle but I did find a loading zone spot I quickly parked and dashed to the window and as of 10.30.23 it was 143 for $1 and NO fees! I will go to the 7Bank ATM in Japan and compare, but there is no fee here for Kamaaina. Keep that in mind. It's best to reserve your Yen, regardless of how much you want to change. They will round the yen, so changing $100 got me 15,000 yen and actually cost me $102.04. It's best to come with another person so you can drive to the front and double park. When I got there, there were no other customers, so they had time (and yen) for me. The market rate was ¥144. The (Kamaaina) rate PME gave me was ¥140. We are going to Japan in a month so we want to exchange some Japanese currency. We were having lunch in Waikiki and after the lunch we were walking around. My wife remember there is a place for currency exchange from US to Japanese money so we decided to stop by, we wasn't really prepared to exchange any money but since we were there we exchanged $400 US. The guy at the shop was really friendly and we have no issue is change the money and they do not have any service charge. The rage is pretty compatible when compared to the local credit union. They are located right across the duty-free shop and they open every day between 11 AM to 4:30 PM. When I read some of the other reviews, I realize that if you exchange a large sum of money, you need to make a reservation. Therefore, I will suggest to call them to find out all the details before you go down, they did tell me that they do not quote you exchange rate over the phone so you pretty much have to go down. I thought the exchange rate was a little disappointing versus the market rate for yen conversion, but I understand they need to make money on the float. In fact, the rate was very similar to the exchange booth at the Ala Moana Center (a different company), which would be more convenient to most people for parking and accessibility. After I arrived in Japan, the rate exchange at the airport beat out what was offered in Hawaii.
