I was visiting Gold Beach, Oregon from Tustin, California. I unfortunately had occasion to be admitted to Gold Beach Hospital. This hospital has the nicest staff. Everyone was very warm and understanding. The doctors were very patient and listened. The nurses were the same. I actually had a favorite nurse, Ani. I had to stay for a couple of days so I did see a rotation of staff, Very happy with the way I was treated. Unfortunately after a couple of weeks I had to return for more care. This review is through a temporary (traveler) employees eyes. I purposely chose to work at this hospital for three months so I could enjoy my days off hiking between Gold Beach and Arcata. This geography and location really helped preserve my sanity. On my work days, I provided VIP service to all patients I took care of. I knew this was a tiny hospital and I would probably work alone. That's fine, but I expect adequate equipment and a safe working environment free of disrespect. Bonus if the manager was more supportive and true to his word. Sadly, there will always be a high attrition rate. Staff and travelers would stay longer if they were valued. read more

My husband went in yesterday with severe back and abdomen pain and DR Michael Neidens ordered the right tests and figured out my husband has a rare disorder! I didn't expect a small rural hospital to figure that out! The travel nurses are exceptional and we're so lucky to have them! I don't recommend this hospital. I found out the majority of nurses are travelers. I overheard the conversations they were having at the desk. Kerry said several times it's a good fu**ing thing that they pay her what they do because she'd never work there if they didn't. I think she said she had 3 Fuc**** weeks left & shes Fuc**** out of here. They didn't have the right instruments for a case & cancelled it after the person was there & ready to go into surgery. They got the person dressed & he went home. Another employee was complaining about an employee named James & said he had no idea what sterile techniques is. That he doesn't use soap to clean instruments & you can't trust him if you're not watching him. A man named John was so incredibly rude to another employee. He was basically telling her she was stupid without using the word stupid. He never allowed her to speak. Each time she went to talk he got louder & cut her off. Mary, Kerry & two other nurses love the 'F' word & hate this hospital. Mary said it gives her high blood pressure. And she can only be nice if nobody pisses her off. Needed medical care for my hubby. I'm thinking kidney stones? Anyway, its not easy to find a parking spot here. Put on your walking shoes. This hospital is really small, old and dated. Good thing they are building a brand new hospital next door. That new hospital is huge compared to this building. Surprisingly fast service. Everyone was very friendly. I believe we only waited 5 minutes in the waiting room before my hubby had to get lab work done. While my hubby was getting his tests done, I walked around the small hospital to see what they had to offer. They have a gift counter in the front of the entrance and a little cafe in the back of the hospital. Not much to offer, but it's something. Before I knew it....all tests were done and we were outta there. Now waiting on results. read more

I went in for a lumbar Epidural, Dr Amsden's staff was completely EPIC. Knowledgeable, caring, every staff on his team introduced themselves and were very pleasant telling me everything going on during the procedure. I highly recommend Dr Amsden for any type of back procedure. read more

Can't say enough great things about this facility and its staff. My husband was suffering acute back pain. Unfortunately, we ended up there the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. Valerie, our intake nurse was friendly, attentive and professional. As was Rachel another nurse. We didn't wait long for the doctor. They discovered his potassium was alarmingly low so gave him IV. They checked for stones but found none. Gave him muscle relaxers and we went back to our family's. The facility is clean. The staff friendly. BTW, my bro-in-law was also a recent patient and had the same favorable impression. The local (Brookings) consensus is if you have a choice between Sutter (Crescent City) and Curry, choose Curry. . read more

I'm a retired cardiovascular technologist (perfusionist & nurse) who's been out of active practice since about 1997. At age 71, now that I've been turned out to pasture so to speak, I have finally found lots of opportunities to relax and enjoy some of the spectacular scenery that the Oregon Coast offers that were denied me during my busy prior career. One of my favorite activities is writing and so it was that in the middle of October I took advantage of a Gold Beach friend's offer to stay in a lovely little cottage on the hillside above his home on Edson Creek Road, for the purpose of making some progress on my latest book. At any rate, there I was, pounding out about 3000 good words a day on my book one morning, when it occurred to me that I felt rather odd. Not in any pain, certainly, but just 'off'. Since I'm a former medical professional, I thought perhaps it might be prudent to drop in at the new Curry General Hospital ER for a quick check. Dr. Michael Niedens was on duty at the time and quickly determined that I was in what we call 'sustained SVT', or 'Supraventricular Tachycardia'. SVT is a cardiac arrhythmia of the atria that can, if not expeditiously dealt with, be potentially life-threatening. Quick action is required. Normally this will be done via a chemical means that involves injection of a substance that renders the heart lifeless, but for less than a split-second. That split second is usually enough to allow the heart to convert back to NSR (Normal Sinus Rhythm) and it usually does. In my case, it didn't. Doubling the dose and then quadrupling it still didn't yield the desired conversion to a normal heartrate, so the next step was electro-cardioversion, performed with a defibrillator type instrument. A quick ZAP of 200 Joules of current proved, fortunately, to be effective and I was soon admitted to the new Gold Beach hospital for several days of observation and investigation. Meanwhile, as they placed me in room 314 (with a spectacular view of the ocean just off the Gold Beach Airport, just as the recent storm was moving in), I found myself wondering what exactly had brought on this mysterious episode! As a non-smoker (lifelong), who eats a heart-healthy diet, runs a couple miles before breakfast every day, cycles, has no family history of heart disease and has over 35 years of experience taking care of cardiac patients, I was absolutely flummoxed! I was now on, as we used to say in cardiology, 'on the other side of the bed rail' and finding it something I never in my wildest imaginings had ever expected to experience. To my great fortune, Curry General Hospital had just opened its brand new, state-of-the-art health care facility in Gold Beach and the physician/nurse team handling my care regimen were absolutely top-rate. This included Drs. Michael Niedens, Attending Physician Robert Dobrowalski, Cardiologist Seth Giri, and nurses Pattee B. and Marianne W. Over my subsequent four-day stay at Curry General, my daily status was carefully managed and I am pleased to say the quality of care received was of the highest level. Coming from someone who has worked in the field (all over the world) for over 35 years, I think that's saying something significant! Furthermore, the rooms were well appointed, the conveniences properly placed and even the food...usually a major source of patients' complaints in hospitals...was delightful. The food was expertly prepared, very tasty and served HOT. [On a side note, my nurses told me that the hospitals' chief chef also makes a mean clam chowder; sadly, I left before I had a chance to taste it, but perhaps sometime in the future!] After four days of careful management, Dr. Dobrowalski cleared me for discharge, with the proviso that I immediately follow-up this event with my primary care provider (Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento, CA) and I headed back home with about 35,000 words completed on my 130,000-word novel and a new regard for the fragility of human life...even an old cardiovascular practitioner like me! The planning, services and staffing of the new Curry General Hospital are peerless, in my opinion, and I highly commend all who were and are involved with the efforts that resulted in its recent successful grand opening. read more

This is a small town hospital and I'm glad it's here. They have brought new programs in with the new hospital that are steps forward but be advised that going to this hospital is fraught with woe. I have friends who work here and there are some employees do their jobs well but there is an overall incompetence that runs from the top down. I have encountered so many mistakes: admitting not entering doctors orders correctly; performing and charging for tests that were not ordered; incorrect medication prescriptions; taking days to not get around setting up a monitor that was ordered by the doctor for an urgent situation (a person could die waiting for them to get around to doing their job). We all make mistakes but there comes a point when mistakes add up to incompetence. As my doctor told me, if you want competent care, move. read more

Curry General's new facility is efficient and clean. My primary physicians was on vacation, leaving no one to cover. Since this was the closest medical facility, I took a chance. I was seen immediately at Urgent Care (Emergency), diagnosed, and out the door with prescription in less than an hour. Staff was friendly, capable, and trustworthy. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for routine medical issues. read more

I moved to the area recently from the midwest. I didn't think I would need the medication or cares I needed back home. A dr. Appointment is difficult to get here in oregon. Until I found curry general. Walking in, I was quite afraid of how they were going to be, since the hospitals in the other direction are horrible. I was pleasantly surprised and relieved to find dr. Haney. She's from my area of the United States, and it shows. I felt better immediately. They went above and beyond to help me. They didn't judge, they didn't scare me, yell at me, none of the things coos bay hospital does. Curry general gave me meds, and not just any meds, they listened and we came up with a plan together! They called my doctors back home and had my records in minutes. They listened to me. They gave me a sandwich, chips and a drink. They believed me...and I was honest, so that's good. Coos Bay didn't believe me at all. Even though the er was extremely busy today, they did so much to help, including making me laugh, giving me a private place to talk, even called in a counselor for me to talk to! I had to leave to get my kids from school, and when I got back we got right down to business. I showed up late to have an Herna operations at Curry Hospital. They said it was ok. The two nurse's ruffle me up and committed a Hate crime on me. The ugly fat one in plain close, put the tourniquet on my wrist. I have the biggest veins in my hands. And it blue up like a balloon. She was very rude having a hard time getting the vain. Thinking what's she doing to me, I said that I've been making America great- and she stop me. Yelling at me to shut up, with a vicious scream. interrupted me and told me at the top of her lungs we don't talk politics here. Being on a drug called Symbicort it's hard to think and react. I should of walk out then. Right before the operation the anesthesiologist told me she'd help me out and watch over me. I had an agreement with one of the nurses then everything would be calm and peaceful during the operation. Sitting on the operating table they gave me a drug and before I lay down on a table I blacked out I don't know what happened. When I got out of surgery back in post op, the first thing out of the nurses mouth was do I want a painkiller. I just woke up from the operation my eyes are still crossed I said okay. After taking it the anesthesiologist came in and told me everything went good. I won't need any painkillers till tomorrow because what she gave me should block out any pain till the morning. The damn nurse already gave me a painkiller. Why? Then the skinny old lady nurse told me I had to pee, and could not go on till I did. I said how do you pee when you have opiates in your system. I got out of surgery around 2:30 she made me stay there till almost 6. She also gave me 2 cups of coffee. Hoping it would work did you ever have to pee real bad and couldn't. It was a very bad experience for me and I wanted to get out of there. Getting up to go to the bathroom to pee I was unstable. Now the old lady nurse she's being unstable and screams at me to. I'm putting her job in jeopardy. That's a hate crime both of them and they should be locked up in prison. Now the Hospital apologizes with me and says there's sorry and we worked out a deal and I won't have to pay them anything except my insurance. Now their billing department has put me to collection for the bills I was told I did not have to pay. Nice well im not going to wait for karma to xxxxx them up.oh when a person they called in to assist me, she thank me for allowing her to get overtime.
