Because of my complicated medical history, I did a lot of research to find a new dental surgeon after recently moving back from Chicago. As stated by other reviewers, Dr. Mirkhan has many awards for her outstanding work and has been recognized by her peers and the community for the same. I was charged for a deep cleaning without any local anesthetic, which amounts to a regular cleaning. And I was recommended to have an invasive surgery, and when I got second opinions by two other dentists and a periodontist, they all very confidently recommended against said procedure based on my XRs, probings and clinical picture and all three felt I was being recommended an unnecessary service.

The insurance claim was ultimately not voided, leaving me responsible for $2,527.40 out of pocket. I felt the manager just wanted to get the money from me and I felt cheated. Unfortunately, the replacement crown placed by Dr. Alhamdi also resulted in failed margin fitting and seal. After reviewing X rays that I specifically requested, I noticed a distal margin ledge that was never disclosed to me. Dr. Alhamdi kept saying the margin fit was acceptable, but two independent dentists later confirmed the margin issue and an inadequate seal. Dr. Alhamdi said he can redo the crown for my son not because he made some errors but because of a courtesy of my request which made me feel he is not an honest person. Despite multiple written and phone requests, the office has never provided my son's clinical notes nor responded to my refund request. This was already the second failed crown on the same tooth, and my son now needs a third replacement. Keeping repeating the crown 3 times plus the original crown is damaging the tooth a lot and my son is only 17 years old. Given the repeated issues, lack of transparency, and poor follow up, I no longer trust this office for care.

Somewhere between February and August baby came and out of network provider and while we are required to let them know any insurance updates, they do not do the same. Out of the two times I had went they offered fluoride treatment, and did not specify it would be an extra charge. The first time I declined, and the second time I agreed because I had come across the coupon on yelp. I didn't notify the woman that I would be using this coupon and as you can see it had been used. However, she decided to go ahead and run it through my insurance so that they could collect the money on it rather than honoring the free service they offered. In addition to this, I was quoted for a crown and a filling without them checking my insurance. They asked if they could do that for me and when they did they came back with even higher numbers. When I asked if she had actually contacted my insurance, she said no. So I am confused about what was projected and how it continue to get higher between employees and the fact that she wanted to convince me that she had discussed this with my insurance prior to me sharing my knowledge of what is actually covered. This has been a fiasco, and I'm ashamed to say that I actually referred friends to this place based off of my first experience and find out that others are also having the same issue.

He said that the dental hygienist does all the cleanings and is very thorough (about 45 minutes) which is normal. I come in for my routine cleaning and all is nice, staff is very nice and friendly. Dr Jaksha is very nice too, very personable, witty sense of humor; a charming man. He literally cleans my teeth for 5 minutes and tells me that there is bleeding and discomfort (which is quite normal) so he will stop and not charge me for the general cleaning but to make an appointment to see the dental hygienist. I said "I thought that's what I came in for..Obviously, they must have goofed on my appointment and sent me home, then at the desk, he explains to me that he is charging for the general cleaning and they will email me an estimate for further dental work. At this point I am very confused and a bit angry. Long story short, Dr. Jaksha says in an email that he will credit my insurance for the general cleaning. I get 2 cleanings a year for the past 30 something years and never have I had a 5 minute teeth cleaning...My teeth still felt the same, there was still stuff on there that my toothbrush can't reach...this is absurd!!! 3-4 weeks later, I try to make an appointment to get a teeth cleaning at another dentist; come to find out that Dr Jaksha never refunded or credited my insurance. I am quite livid at this point. Not only are they losing me as a patient, but also my friend who is angry I got angry at him!

A "One Star" review because it is the lowest allowed! I have been seeing Dr. Abelar for 40 years (he has also treated my wife and children) and he has always provided outstanding care. HOWEVER, he has sold his practice to a private equity firm and they now "run the show;" "care" is no longer about the health and welfare of the patient but rather how much money they can squeeze out of the patient. In the past, if there was an issue regarding treatment Dr. Abelar would promptly resolve it at no additional cost. Not now; he apparently has no say regarding fees/charges. Not only are these unwarranted, but they are excessive and not transparent. Six years ago, Dr. Abelar applied 8 veneers (4 upper/4 lower) for $25,000 and assured me that they would last at least 10 years. They looked and felt great. Last week I noticed a very tiny chip on one of the upper veneers and had Dr. Abelar take a look today. He said it would be a very simple quick repair and said he would be right back. After waiting about 15 minutes in the chair the office manager came in with a form to sign. I noticed that they wanted to charge me almost $500 (the actual charge was $479 and there was no itemization). I told her that the veneer should not have failed so soon and that I should not be charged for this simple repair. She refused and I said I would "live with the chip." She then said I still have to sign the form (which acknowledged acceptance of the fee!!!) and I refused. The office manager left and Dr. Abelar returned. He said he would ask if he could fix the chip at no charge. He left and returned a few minutes later saying that he had permission to make the repair at no charge. He made the repair in about 10 minutes and it looked great. As I was leaving the office the office manager stopped me and said I had to pay $149.00 for "the exam." When I protested, she said they were not charging me for the repair but rather for the photograph and the 2 minutes Dr. Abelar looked at my tooth! After explaining the absurdity of this and receiving a blank stare when I asked if they really wanted to lose 2 patients who have been seeing Dr. Abelar for 40 years (my wife and I), I paid the $149. So, if you are looking for outstanding dental care, I strongly recommend that you look elsewhere; the only thing Aesthetic Dentistry of San Diego cares about is your wallet.

It was very obvious he had a serious dental issue, likely an infection. Instead, we were seen by someone named Soha Hemmat, who introduced herself as a doctor, but based on this experience, I seriously question her competence. She spent less than two minutes examining my son. No thorough check, no concern, no effort. She dismissed everything as "just a virus," told us to brush his teeth and give him Tylenol, and walked out like the situation didn't matter. That was completely wrong -- and dangerously negligent. My son's fever continued, and his condition did not improve. We had to contact his actual doctor and take him back to be seen again just six hours later. He was properly examined and diagnosed with a clear infection, and immediately given antibiotics. This could have gotten much worse because of her careless and dismissive attitude. I have been coming to this office for four years and have always had professional experiences, which makes this even more disappointing. But this encounter was unacceptable. No parent -- especially one with a child who has special needs -- should be brushed off like this. This office seriously needs to address this situation. Either provide proper training or reevaluate who they allow to treat patients, because this level of incompetence and lack of care is not just unprofessional -- it's dangerous. Be very careful if you are seen by this person.
