Incompetent work, severe pain, and abusive behavior--avoid this dentist. I went to this dentist to replace a cracked inlay (a sort of partial crown). I had no pain and no issues. No root canal was needed at the time. He repaired one cavity but must have missed another one. He then ordered a crown that was poorly made, and it didn't fit. He kept on drilling it until it didn't fit, and even considered ordering another one. After trying to fit the crown so many times, he ended up numbing and drilling my tooth again, and slapped the bad crown on anyway. I couldn't understand what was happening and dared to ask him gently, because crown attachment never goes like that. He got very angry and defensive, and drove me to tears. I was numb and helpless, and he blamed me for questioning him, telling me that if I didn't trust him, he wouldn't proceed. Not only did he ruin my molar permanently, he also made me afraid of the dentist because of his incompetence and horrible bedside manner. What a snake--he seemed super nice in the beginning but turned nasty after messing up, right when the patient was numb in the chair and in such a vulnerable position. So, after going there with no pain for a routine issue, I am now unable to chew on one side and experience sharp pain from pressure. I now require a root canal and am afraid of dealing with dentists. Multiple dentists have since pointed out the lack of a seal and the sloppy job done on this tooth. Also, just a month after this work, the crown--which I didn't even dare to chew on--fell out while I was on vacation in Hawaii, just a few hours before my flight. A local dentist was able to kindly reattach it much better, and at least it hasn't fallen out since then. However, I still have the pain and still can't chew on one side. I finally mastered the courage to write this review. Shame on him for causing so much suffering, having a horrible bedside manner, and refusing to explain anything. I actually was lucky to know a great radiologist who could read the X-rays and explain the second cavity to me. Other dentists also pointed out on the X-ray that the crown basically isn't big enough to seal the tooth properly read more

I use to go to another dentist where Anthony was at. I hate the dentist I think it's the worse dr office to go to. But Anthony always made it a bit easier. When he told me he's going to open wide La Jolla I was sad. But my new dentist had a new hygienist who told me I need Invisalign and all these other treatments done. The dentist said I had more cavities as well. So I made an appointment 6 months later after Anthony left with open wide. And best decision I made. Dr Dains is awesome and super helpful. I wish I could rate Dr. Dains 10 stars if I could. I am one of those people with bad dental genes. No matter how much I care for my oral hygiene- it just is bad. I can't count how many root canals I've had- which also means I can't count how many dentists I've seen. I had literally lost all hope that I would ever find an ethical, kind, caring dentist. Every other office I ever visited was the typical con artist / shady practices- only caring about the bottom line =money. Finding Dr. Dains is like hitting the lottery in finding what people deserve in a doctor. I needed a second opinion on work and cost and found him on Yelp. I left a message and he called me back right away. I was able to talk to him about my issues and he listened and carefully walked me through what was probably needed. He was able to accommodate an appointment that same week and he detected the issue and extracted my tooth in a gentle, kind, and communicative way. He didn't try to overcharge me and was completely transparent and fair. After my work he called to check up on me and gave me his personal cell to text if I had any issues, or questions. I received dental care here in 2022 and at the time was not happy due to pain during drilling during all three filling procedures I had. Bedside manner was a little strange, he asked multiple times if I was diabetic (maybe because I am cavity prone, but he never explained why he kept asking. I'm cavity prone from genetics and eating habits and told him that). I moved away and found a new dentist and thought that was the end of it, but recently moved back to La Jolla so I saw a new dentist here in La Jolla. Unfortunately teeth 31, 30, and 29 that had been filled with Dr. Dains all had decay below the fillings. Was told by new La Jolla dentist to never go back to Open Wide, as the original decay had never been fully removed and continued spreading deeper in my teeth and to the neighboring teeth without any classic sensitivity symptoms along the gum line or surface of the teeth since the filling was covering the upper surface. I needed the 3 fillings redone, plus a new filling on tooth 28 where the decay had spread. The decay in tooth 30 was so advanced it was nearly a root canal. Thank god it wasn't. Want to warn others being treated for cavities by Dr. Dains. read more

I started going to Open Wide La Jolla as I wanted a dentist closer to home. It was easy getting an appointment and getting set up as a new patient. Dr. Dains and his staff have all been great. They are kind, professional, and always very welcoming. I have to say that I stayed with my other dentist for over 15 years (even when the practice changed ownership) because of my hygenist there. Anthony has been wonderful at Open Wide. He is very gentle while cleaning, personable, and so nice (just like my old hygenist). At my last cleaning, he didn't even have to tell me to close my mouth whenever I needed extra suction; I felt like we were just in sync and I knew when to do that! Dr. Dains has been great as well and really tries to get to know his patients. I had a very old filling that needed to be refilled and it was so quick and easy to get that fixed. I mentioned that my husband goes to another dentist because he had an emergency that needed to be dealt with on a Saturday and Dr. Dains mentioned that if we ever needed him over the weekend, to just call him, which I really appreciated. So, I think my husband will start going to Open Wide as well. The office is on Draper and it's pretty easy to find street parking, even parking a block away is not that far of a walk. After several times of having to rescheduling, I made it in...I had to reschedule due to personal reasons, but EACH time Dr. Dains called me personally to make sure I was okay, knowing that I had anxiety about coming in, but I assured him it had nothing to do w/ him, it was my personal schedule. -Easy to find- -Ton of FREE parking out front -The office is exceptionally clean -State of the art equipment -Great music (not too loud that you feel like you're at a club, but just perfect that you don't hear them machines cleaning your teeth ;) -Very welcoming AND relaxing environment Before my appt Dr. Dains went over what I was going to have done as well as broke down my insurance coverage....this is VERY important as the last practice I went to billed my insurance for work that wasn't done and thought I would just pay.....NOPE! 'Twas the night of Halloween and after gorging myself with all types of candy, I was suddenly greeted with unmistakable tooth pain! I thought to myself, ah darn those last two twizzlers must have done me in! I popped some asprin and went to bed but could not sleep it was so bad. I called Dr. Dains office around 6am the next morning and left a voicemail asking if I could be seen today. Dr. Dains personally called me back and said he could likely see me that same day. I went about my day like usual until the pain was absolutely unbearable. I was groaning in agony and crying. It was like Dr. Dains knew how bad of pain I was in because all of a sudden, he was personally calling me to give me options how to remedy my pain until my appointment. I was blown away that he called me instead of one of his technicians/office workers. At last, I was out of pain and in such a better place. I had my visit with Dr. Dains and ended up getting a root canal, as expected since I had a previous cavity on this tooth from when I was a kid. The procedure was painless, quick and as comfortable as expected. It wasn't bad at all. I want to give a big huge Thank You to Dr. Dains because he was extremely empathetic to my pain, kind and attentive to me the entire day. It was like he was experiencing the pain alongside me. He never had one of his employees call me, he always called. Even later that day he called to check in on me to see how I was doing. I have been a patient here for a few years and have always had a great experience but this visit deserves every bit of recognition. Dr Daines is a really great dentist! He informs you of options and pros and cons and then you make your treatment decision with him. I really appreciate this approach. His work is amazing! I have really bad anxiety at the dentist but he has made me feel calm and comfortable. I think so highly of him that I plan to have him treat my children. I am willing to drive over an hour to be comfortable and confident in my dentist. He is also very responsive after hours for emergency. I had a tooth break on the 4th of July weekend and spoke to him that night, which calmed my panic and was in the office next day. I literally have the best smile on the planet because of Dr. Jana and her wonderful staff Angela is the best hygienist in the business! Dr. Jana takes her time with you and give you all of the options and she also is an anesthesiologist so if you are afraid like me she can put you to sleep. I needed a lot of work I was afraid of the dentist for years now I look forward to my appointments and so does my brother and sister and about eight other friends. My brother and sister drive down from Newport Beach to go to the dentist that's how good she is. The office is the most modern and superclean and the service is top-notch! This is a family style dentist where she knows you and your family - everyone asks me who my dentist is because I flash my pearly whites! She pulled a tooth for me, gave me an implant, took out my 20 year old retainer, took out all of my silver fillings and replaced with porcelain fillings and had them laser whitened! I get my teeth cleaned every 3 months - I now have molded night retainers and my teeth stay straight. I'm not going to lie I had them put me to sleep for my teeth cleaning and my tooth extraction and when they inserted the post for my implant. I'm not gonna lie she is probably the best looking dentist in the world I'm talking drop dead gorgeous I hope she reads this! I have no problem recommending her and her entire staff to anyone looking for a dentist or oral hygienist- must see Angela! They actually care about your teeth and smile and know what they are doing - Located in the heart of La Jolla they have so many cool places around there whenever my family comes into town to see our dentist we make an occasion out of it who else can say that? Call first let her know you read my review and she will give you special treatment - she gives all of her customers top notch service but if she knows you are a Joshua referral you get the red carpet treatment you'll see ... Open wide also has excellent refreshments in the lobby when you walk in to the right of the front desk is a cute fridge filled with goodies. She takes insurance that is top notch so if you don't have great dental insurance you should call first and make sure she can take care of you. They will make you feel comfortable about smiling, make you feel comfortable with the work that will be done and work with you on breaking up your procedures in time frames that you are comfortable with.
