My dream dress was long sleeve lace, yet I purchased a strapless plunging neckline dress with floral appliqué. I tried it on every day for a week hating the dress more with each try on...then I called Custom Alterations for a hem and take in, she answered and swiftly got me on the schedule. When I arrived at my appt I basically let her know I despised the dress and wanted to give it a complete makeover. I thought she was going to tell me I was crazy especially coming to her LESS THAN 8 WEEKS BEFORE MY WEDDING...but she was confident and totally up for whatever I wanted to do! I told her my long list of things I wanted to change and shared many Pinterest photos with her, and she emailed me an invoice later listing all the changes I wanted with pricing. She was transparent about pricing, timeline, and the dress's limitations...really great communication!! She created sleeves including buttons, loops, and straps for attachment. Removed, recreated, re attached and hemmed my skirt. And she recreated the bodice and added lace. I came to her really upset with the dress I purchased and left a few short weeks later with the dress I envisioned myself in. It looked absolutely amazing and nothing like the original dress at all. Loved what Peggy did to my dress! She noticed things I never would have thought about and did an amazing job!

I requested a fur be added to a hood and elastic be added to the inside of a coat. The consultation was rushed, and the owner expressed to me I should invest in sewing things myself. At the pick up, the detailing to the buttons were poor executed and coming off. I realized upon returning home, I didn't like the presentation of the fur. She denied to fix it because it would be "too messy" and on top of that wanted another additional payment of $15 on top of paying $60 for a string and 9 buttons. read more

Peggy at Custom Alrerations worked on my wedding dress and my wedding parties dresses. I went into my first appt planning to add sleeves to my ballgown. Peggy was completely against and told me that I would take the simplicty of my dress away. I do not like how my arms look and am very self conscious and in my head was going to go to a different place. She talked me through everything I likes about the dress and she made me described how I felt in the dress. this lady is more than "just a seamstress". she gave me confidence, made me laugh throughout the whole process and went above and beyond. She could have just done the sleeves and charged me more but she did not. Not good. My bustle broke before my reception after spending $125 on it. Photos of what my dress looked like before and after i had to knot the train and tie it to my belt. Tried not to worry at my wedding, because it was my wedding, but it looks horrible in photos. Also, was only supposed to have three fittings when I came in for the bird they had not altered my dress from the second. And they quoted me more than $150 less than what I ended up paying. If I could give a 0 star rating, I would. My experience prior to my wedding was great, the staff was friendly and my dress (and bridesmaids dresses) received the alterations needed for a beautiful day. Unfortunately, things only go downhill from there. I noticed in my wedding photos that the belt that was added to my dress was starting to fall off. After the wedding I could see the thin and flimsy stitches used to attach the belt couldn't withstand a single days worth of wear. Many of my wedding photos don't look the way I'd like thanks to this unpolished detail. Worse yet, I purchased cleaning for after the wedding with my alterations. My husband dropped of my dress at the day and time agreed on with the shop and even spoke to a consultant who said they expected him and had my information. They have had my dress for FIVE months and can't provide me any information about it. I called twice and was told they were "looking into it" and got no answers. I've been sending Facebook messages in the same chat I scheduled the dress drop off in and my messages are being read with no response. I cannot get anyone to answer the phone. At this point, I can only assume my dress has been lost or damaged and I will never get my beautiful and expensive wedding dress back. This is extremely heartbreaking and I'd expect a bridal alterations shop to not lose an entire ballgown. I would expect a business to own up to their mistakes and rectify them, not hide from them. I had purchased my dress at White Traditions bridal and they recommended going to Custom Alterations. I am so glad I did! Peggy is amazing had did such an amazing job on my wedding dress. During my alterations process my mother was very sick with brain cancer and I was under a lot of stress. She had worked with me for my appointments to work around my mothers radiation. I had lost so much weight leading up to my wedding due to stress, and days before my wedding we had to take the dress apart and take it in more. I thought I might wait to write this review until after my wedding but I feel it is important to warn any other brides about this place as soon as possible so that no one else has to go through what I have. I am leaving for my destination wedding in eight days and because of this place, I have been in tears most of the day and have a messed-up wedding dress. This place was recommended to me by the bridal shop where I purchased my $1500 wedding gown. Although I could write a book about all the different ways that this woman insulted me, talked down to me, dismissed me, etc., I am going to try to be as brief as possible. Here are some highlights from the 6-7 fittings I've had: - When I told her that I was not happy with the way that the $100 bra (that she recommended I buy) pushed my skin above my dress, making me look like I had serious back fat, she said that I should have a bridesmaid reach up under my dress and under my bra to pull the skin/fat down. Seriously??? At the next fitting when I told her that I still felt like it looked bad she admonished me and said "I TOLD you... you need to have someone pull your skin down. - I wish I had a nickel for every time I heard some lame excuse about somebody's sick in her family, an employee who didn't show up, everyone was tired from working late...etc. I get it... things happen. But every week? - I told her multiple times that I didn't want the skirt to look too mermaid-y. At the next fitting I could barely open up my legs further than 4 inches because it had been taken in so tightly. It was exactly what I told her I didn't want. - Rather than apologize for not doing it right and assuring me that she would get it right, she'd spend most of her time telling me how I didn't make myself clear or how the dress wasn't made right. - I knew things were bad when she said to me "well you're not my only bride". I can assure anyone reading this review right now: I am not a bridezilla. I am not pushy or demanding. If anything, I'm probably too nice sometimes. - After about my fifth fitting when my confidence in her abilities was seriously dwindling, I made a few phone calls and had a back up seamstress lined up. I told Peggy after the "you're not my only bride" comment that I was prepared to just take the dress and go if she didn't think she could fix it. She said that they would make it right but that I would need to come back and see the lady who actually sews the dress. Then she says "she will be here on Saturday but our Saturday appointments cost extra." I said, "how much extra? " She said $125! I told her I wouldn't be paying that fee but that I would be there on Saturday and she did oblige. When I went in for that appointment on that Saturday the dress looked better than it did the time before but there were still some things that were really not right. I felt positive that the next time I came in those issues would be resolved and I could take my dress home. Instead, before I even put the dress on I could see that it was done poorly. She said that I could come back in an hour and a half and the lady who sews the dress would be there to fix it. I left in tears and called the bridal shop where I purchased my dress. They called Peggy to see what was going on. She gave them more excuses. When I came back an hour and a half later Peggy saw me walk through the door and she went into a room and closed the door. The seamstress came in and was so rude to me! She told me "well it looked good on the mannequin. Must be something about your body that makes it look that way." I'm not kidding. She actually said that. Then she went on to tell me that 99% of their brides are totally happy. Her attitudes was confrontational and down right nasty. I never saw Peggy during that visit. She knew how upset I was. She knew I was in tears when I left. She knew that I had cried to the gal who sold me the dress. And she did literally nothing to try to make me feel better or make the situation right. The only employee who is worth a damn at that place is Connie. Custom alterations pretty much ruined the entire wedding planning experience for me. I have been stressed out about this dress for months. And now today, eight days from when I'm supposed to leave for my wedding I do not have a dress that fits right or read more

After 6 fittings they were unable to fit a simple, A-line, unleaded, unsequined dress, instead telling me that I had "blown up like a balloon" and that the dress could not fit with a smooth front or in the hips because the "dress was not made that way." (I weighed within 3 pounds of when I brought the dress in). I am out several hundred dollars and still have to take the dress elsewhere. These ladies are wonderful! I went to this shop to have my wedding dress altered and I couldn't be happier. My dress was a secondhand dress with tons of beading/lace on the bodice and they handled it perfectly. It fits like a dream and they are extremely friendly. Their standard wedding dress alteration package includes three fittings, so you have a few opportunities to get things just right. Don't go here! They are way over priced for the work that they do. They make excuses like "the designer made the dress wrong" and "the dress doesn't fit anyone", instead of actually trying to be decent seamstresses. My dress had single stitches in it and the hem was crooked. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding and she altered multiple dresses incorrectly, not to mention the brides' bustles breaking. The owner keeps asking for money to pay her workers for their hours but keeps giving out subpar work. The only reason that they get two stars is because they are nice. read more

Let me start by saying I used to do bridal alterations for a short time some years ago. I majored in fashion design, so I was trained to do it PERFECTLY and not take shortcuts. Needless to say I have high standards. I did not want to alter my own gown, as I had my hands full with altering my bridesmaids' dresses (so they would not have to pay for it), along with other wedding stuff. I bought my dress from Robin's Bridal, and regrettably let the girls in the back of Robins Bridal (called Billy's Alterations) touch it. I ended up having to buy a second dress with priority shipping a few weeks prior to the wedding because it was so bad. You can see my full review on them on their Yelp page. The second time around I did my research, but my options were limited, as I needed it done in under two weeks. I was super stressed, but when I went in there for my first fitting, they put my mind at ease. It was definitely pricier than the other place I went (paid $180 for the hem on mine, but it depends on the gown), but that is because they do it right and don't take short cuts. It is a lengthy process, but I had my fitting on Wednesday, and I came back on Saturday, and it was perfect! They pinned the skirt where the edge should be to cut later, removed the lace trim at the bottom and moved it up on the mesh overlay, rather than just cutting it off and tacking it on top of the other layer of lace like the other place did. It looks pristine, and the length was great. No loose beads or hanging threads. She is also an expert in bustles, though personally I don't care for the look of modern bustles, at least not with the dress I chose. She reminded me that I could have a loop attached to the outside that pulls in to hide with a bead on top during the ceremony. I know I did this during my time in alterations, but I had completely forgotten. They are so friendly; they asked about details of my wedding with genuine interest, and we chatted for a bit. They are from here, so they speak perfect English (I really don't have anything against foreign-born people, but with something as important as your wedding dress, good communication is important, which is why I mention it, especially after the disaster with my first dress). They really went the extra mile by giving me the fabric trim from my dress, so I can use it for wrapping the stems of my bouquet. They packaged it in a baggie along with my extra set of laces (for the corset-style back) that I didn't want to use and attached safety pins to the ends of the laces I did want to use as it makes lacing much quicker. Brilliant! They took the time to carefully put the dress in the bag. They weren't rushed. And she even carried the dress to the car for me and asked how I preferred to have it stored in there for the drive, then did just as I directed. It was a really great experience. I wish I had taken my first dress to them. Important Note: They take only cash or check, and you have to put some money down at each fitting or else they charge (presently) an extra $35. Currently, they normally only do fittings on Wednesdays and Saturdays. read more

I took in an evening gown that was backless and wanted them to add fabric to the back. They did a great job and I'm glad I went to them. I originally went to Genis Tailor in St. Peter's, but the owner was absolutely rude and the place was filthy and she had her dog roaming around down where she did the alterations, which I thought was so unsanitary. I live in O'Fallon and I did not mind driving out to Valley Park-Peggy and her team got the job done right and knew immediately what I wanted when I came in. Her price was also very reasonable. Brought a formal skirt in and when I finally found the place (lack of signage) I didn't even take three steps into the building before they told me no. Not any fault of theirs, they seemed like nice people. Peggy and her team did an amazing job taking my way too big wedding dress down to a perfect fit. The dress was bought off rack and had some pretty complicated lacework that took awhile to get right but at the end fit me just as if I had not bought a dress 6 sizes too big! The dress needed a lot of work, and I knew from the beginning that it would take awhile so there were quite a few fittings, and a few that didn't have a lot of progress done and so may have been avoided, but at the end the quality of work was very impressive and I couldn't have been happier! read more

Unfortunately I do NOT recommend this place at all. Our first appointment was great, everyone was super friendly and made me feel at ease about the alterations that needed to be made to my dress... the 3rd, 4th, and 5th fittings were the polar opposite. One time I went in when we had scheduled a fitting and they had gotten the day and time mixed up and Peggy got an attitude/very rude and unprofessional with ME about HER mixing up the times. I left in tears. After that, I came in to find a spot of blood in my dress at the bottom where her and her team were hand sewing on lace to the bottom of my dress. She actually had the audacity to blame this blood spot on me... when obviously I hadn't even been in contact with the dress. She also told me she would put some fabric in the armpits of the dress to make it soft and never did that. At my last dress fitting (a week before my wedding) she STILL hadn't finished my dress and told me I "had ants in my pants and need to calm down". Who wouldn't have "ants in their pants" when their dress isn't finished a week before their wedding? Not only that but at my last fitting she pricked her finger and got ANOTHER little spot of blood on the side of my dress. Finally (AND THE WORST PART OF ALL) She also was supposed to fix some snaps onto my clip on train (the favorite part of my dress; which I am attaching a picture to show how pretty it is) and after I FINALLY got to take my dress home, I try it on at my house only to find out she hadn't even fixed the snaps and my mother and grandma had to go to the fabric store to get clips and fix the snap theirselves. Absolutely horrible customer service and a very upsetting experience thanks to Custom Alternations. Worst experience ever. I would give this place zero stars if that were at all possible. Avoid this place at all costs. This shop completely ruined my wedding dress. After 4-5 fittings, two months with this place, and less than a month to go to my wedding day, we were forced to find a new seamstress and an entirely new dress (the sample size of the same dress from the store, which mostly fit, thank god, and which the store kindly agreed to trade out for my ruined dress since it had recommended this shop) because Peggy had completely ruined the dress that we brought to her to tailor. Similar to another reviewer, Peggy was full of excuses for her poor work - "the manufacturer made the dress wrong", "the sides aren't taken in the same (a full inch different) and the dress looks crooked on you because everyone's body is different and not all alterations are exactly even", "this dress is very difficult to alter because of the way it is made" and the list goes on. She also would often become angry with my mother and I when we expressed surprise at how poorly the dress fit and questioned why the dress never seemed to be getting any closer to fitting properly (it got worse with almost every fitting). We (my mother and I) were also continually lied to about the alterations and blamed for the way Peggy altered things; she would state that we made her alter the dress a certain way that she didn't approve of, that she previously informed us that certain alterations would not line up correctly with the seams of the dress, that she sewed it exactly where it was pinned, and that it was my body that was causing all the problems - all untrue. I felt like I was taking crazy pills. (Note: At the last fitting with Peggy, she did offer to make it right by having me come back to her store and stay all night with her while she worked so that the dress could be tried on for any further adjustments; however, by that time, it was too late). Upon meeting with a new seamstress, I tried on the dress Peggy had worked on and the unaltered sample dress from the store (which the store kindly let me borrow for this appointment prior to trading it out for my ruined dress). Upon thorough examination of both dresses, the new seamstress informed me that the dress Peggy had altered was completely "unsalvagable" and that the structural integrity destroyed. Let that sink in - my brand new dress was completely RUINED by this shop and I had to pay for their "work" in ruining it! The new seamstress further stated that all the alterations that were made by Custom Alterations were incorrectly done, completely bizarre, and made no sense. My new seamstress further stated that it wouldn't be difficult to alter the sample dress and even determined that she could make improvements to it! Based upon my experience with this new seamstress, Custom Alterations is a joke - awful work, no attention to detail, and terrible service. I wouldn't wish the stress of all this on anyone - completely takes the wind out of your sails about the actual wedding day. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. read more

My dress was falling apart the day of my wedding and they took no responsibility for the quality of their craft. Unfortunately, my experience with custom alterations was not pleasant. I was asked to take my business elsewhere a month before my wedding by the owner after I showed discontent with what was done to my dress. Instead of trying to correct any issues with my dress she asked me to leave. On the day of my wedding, all of the tacking to my dress broke and it was impossible for it to bustle. I would never recommend anyone to use this business and I will also be sending in a complaint to the better business bureau as well as making sure that all wedding websites know of my dissatisfaction and blatant disrespect shown to me by the owner. I bought two dresses from an antique store, and they were able to take pieces from each dress (sleeves and skirt from one, bodice from the other) to make the perfect dress for me. This place was recommended to us by the bridal shop we got our bridesmaid dresses from. They did a horrible job on all three dresses. Very sloppy work and super over priced considering it seems like their seamstresses do not know how to properly tailor anything. They charged $75 to take in a dress and shorten straps on a junior bridesmaid dress and it wasn't even done properly. All they did for the straps was fold the fabric over at the top and sew it together so there was a very noticeable lump at the shoulder of the strap. My maid of honor took the dress in to have the straps altered and when she returned they couldn't even zip it up, when a week ago it fit fine. She has spent $150 on these alterations, on her second round and we aren't even sure the dress will look right in time for the wedding. DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING TO THIS PLACE! We are now taking the dresses to ANOTHER tailor to fix the horrendous alterations this place did. read more
