The food and drinks are always amazing, but honestly, that's not what makes this place so unbelievably special. **It's the people.** The staff is what makes The Cut what it is. Kim is one of the kindest, most organized, fun people you'll ever meet, and the events she creates are incredible. She has a way of making everyone feel like family. I wish I could name every employee because I would literally be naming the entire staff. We have NEVER had a bad experience. When we ask our daughter where she wants to go for dinner, she always says, "The Cut." And honestly, it isn't even for the food. It's because she feels loved, welcomed, and at home there. Today, they made our daughter's 10th birthday **beyond special**so special that I actually cried. That kind of thoughtfulness means more than they probably realize. Our family all lives downstate near Detroit, and every time we're at The Cut, they make us feel like we belong here. Like we're family. Like we're loved. You can have great food anywhere. What makes The Cut different is the people who make you feel like you're coming home. We should have known it was not going to go well. We were warned by a nice gentleman as we approached front door to proceed with caution and whatever we do, do not order the fish! We have been coming to this restaurant for years! It has been one of our favorite places to enjoy the food, patio, and live music in the summer while we are spending time at our happy place, our cottage at beautiful Higgins Lake.....until this summer. At the beginning of the summer we could do call ahead seating if our party was 8 or more. We did this many weekends until the weekend of August 7th! We called ahead for a group of 10 and were told they do not take call ahead seating requests!? Weird, we've been doing this all summer! For years actually. When we arrived, the manager got very defensive telling me she would fire any staff that allowed someone to call ahead! The following weekend, we had a party of 4! Didn't even try to call ahead, just went early! Requested a table on the patio! There were many open tables! They had to check availability?! Yes, we have a table. Full sun! It was a beautiful summer evening! But there were at least 3-4 tables in the shade open. We requested the host to move us to a table in the shade. We were denied. First we were told that someone had been there already, left and they were coming back(they were holding the table for them)! Then the waitress told us the tables were "reserved" for friends of the owners! I stated I thought they didn't take reservations. She corrected me, that they do in fact, take call ahead seating for groups of 6 or more! Wow, that's interesting because we were refused this last weekend with a group of 10 and the manager literally told me that she would fire someone if she found out they allowed this. I requested to speak to the manager again, so much discrepancy in the information we were receiving. We just wanted to move out of the blazing sun into a shaded table(there were 3-4 full or partial shaded tables available). It took her 15 min to approach our table. This woman was so condescending, so disrespectful! So aggressive! She didn't introduce herself, she just approached our table with pure inappropriate defense. Basically told us to get up, put our name on the list, and wait until the people that are not there yet decide to show up, and once they are done they will reseat us! Btw, I was a restaurant manager (not fast food)when I was in college 25 years ago. If I would have treated any customer the way she treated our table, I would have lost my job! She basically told us they had a party that had booked the restaurant earlier that day and were returning at some point that evening and they were holding tables for them if and when they return! Basically one paying customer is valued higher than another. And we were not the valued customer! Also, did I mention we are a diverse group of people. I'm white, my husband is black, and my SIL and niece were with us, both black. Our group of friends from the previous weekend are a very diverse group of white, Asian, and black. I would like to believe this did not play a part in how we were treated either weekend, but I do believe it absolutely did! It's sad! We will never return to Cut River Grill! This place has gone downhill since its opening. We assumed that as they widely overcharged their patrons at least they would invest some of that profit into the place. Not happening. Facility still looks like a dump - inside and out. Most recently ordered blackened chicken with my salad - the toughest muscular chicken I've ever experienced - it literally crunched in my mouth as I chewed it - very odd sensation. Hey, stuff happens, but when I tell the server I can't eat any more because the texture is so weird, I would expect it to be immediately removed from my bill. Not here. Great spot in Higgins Lake! The staff is very friendly and attentive! The facility is clean and there is plenty of parking! There is outdoor seating as well! The patio is nice during the summer. Quick update: We came back on a bustling Thursday night for the Lions first preseason game and man was it busy. Even with it being busy you were able to quickly be seated but we chose to place a carry out order. We ordered a pizza that only took about twenty minutes to come out freshly baked. After eating this pizza this will be the ONLY thing I order moving forward. They knocked this pizza out of the park. It was truly the perfect blend of thickness of crust, crunch of the crust along with a nice butter parmesan dusting across the pizza. It was DELICIOUS! read more

Nice spot in Higgins Lake area. Came in for a late lunch and sat at the bar. The bartender was nice and super helpful when an we had a oopsie spill on a sweater. They have a good size menu with a lot of options for everyone and looked like they were doing a 5 course meal for new years that looked great and for a killer price! Had the pleasure of dining here on Thursday date night which included soup or salad, entree and a bottle of wine for $56! The stuffed flounder and lemon pepper were unbelievably good and cooked to perfection. The kids had the Alfredo and cheeseburger and both were equally as pleased. I have a problem with remembering the day of the week. Another Friday in Northern Michigan where I forgot what day it was and decided I needed some type of fish entree. I didn't want to cook because first I would have had to gone to the store to buy fish. Not an easy thing to do in Rural Michigan. So I chose Cut River Grille for it's closeness and usually good tasting food. I'm so glad Mom forced me to do takeout. When I got to the restaurant to pickup the food it was a madhouse--which is every Northern Michigan restaurant's dream. People with reservations were even having to wait til servers were available. But patrons didn't seem to care. Just more reason to grab a drink from the bar and go listen to the live music on deck. Hey now that I say that I realize the music was at a decibel of enjoyment. I got there probably earlier than I should've. Takeout on Friday is probably not the norm. The manager hunted down my meal which was still cooking. He asked me who took my order but darn if I knew. I could barely hear her on the phone. The connection was lousy--again whatcha gonna do it's Northern Michigan. I ordered pan-seared Walleye and my dinner mate (aka Mom) had Shrimp Pappardelle...glad I can spell that cause I can't for the life of me say it. The Shrimp meal looked amazing. Homemade pasta with six very very large shrimp. Maybe could have had a little more pink sauce. The portion was huge. I kept asking Mom if she was eating. Every time I looked over the amount didn't seem to change. When Mom claimed she was full I had to assume she had been eating--or did she pull the wool over my eyes. Nah! It was a big portion. The Walleye was fresh tasting no fishy taste or smell. The rice was called Spanish rice but I would call it a flavored rice with onions, red peppers, and broccoli. I have to admit though that when I opened the container, it had an odd smell. I couldn't place it and chocked it up to my smeller being off due to allergies from pollen, wildfire smoke, and weather related sinus problems oh and maybe residual from Covid. What else could it be since I ate all of my meal. The Walleye was a nice size fillet with some bone thrown in. Hey it's Walleye. Cut River Grille has yet to disappoint. The higher than average Local prices don't seem to deter people from coming. Cut River serves unique food compared to other local places and as long as quality continues, people will keep coming. My fellow Yelp Elite team are going to be disappointed in me again. I failed to take pictures of my food. DUH! Here on Saturday of Memorial weekend. The Cut has been remodeled. We sat in the bar area. We were the only ones there. There is a. Ice outdoor seating area that was hopping. Staff were not wearing masks, but I hear that this is pretty normal up here. We both had the spinach salad. It comes with strawberries, pieces of Gouda, chopped almonds and a mustard vinaigrette. We then had the curry cauliflower appetizer. It came on a bed of mint coconut sauce. It was good. It is a cold appetizer and a little spicy but the mint coconut sauce helps to cool it down. We also had the curry carrot soup. Very flavorful. My crab cucumber avocado sushi roll did not come out with the rest of the food. It was good. As placed a carry out dessert order. As we were waiting for her dessert order, the bartender gave us a taste of the campfire cup drink. OMG, it was awesome. We might have to come back in a couple hours for happy hour! We got a piece of strawberry rhubarb pie, chocolate cake, and both peach and the Tennessee bourbon blueberry cobbler. There is also apple pie blueberry pie & Keylime cheesecake on the menu. From the infamous pie lady. The chocolate cake was amazing. Somehow we got apple cobbler instead of the peach cobbler but that's ok. read more

The whole crew was able to get a Friday reservation for dinner. We were happy to catch a perch fish fry & all the kids loved the french fries. We went out for dinner last Saturday and ordered a round of bottled beers for five people, which took 20 minutes to arrive. After delivering our drinks, the waitress took our food order. When we ordered another round of drinks, the service was even slower. Four other tables ordered drinks and food after us, yet their orders were served before ours. By the time we finally received our food, those four tables--each with four people--had already finished their meals and drinks. It seemed like the waitress forgot to place our orders and made every excuse imaginable for the delay . 10/5/24 The location and atmosphere was good. The staff was very nice and the service was good, with the exception our food was cold when it was served. We had the Rib Eye Steak that cost $32.00. It was a thin cut of steak, not even an inch. It didn't taste like steak, it was tough and was even difficult to cut with a steak knife. Everything was cold on the plate. Very disappointed in this meal for the price it cost. For appetizers we had the smoked white fish dip which was very good. The french onion soup was mediocre. We've been to the Cut River Grille numerous times in the last month and each time the food and service have been great. Recently went to a wine tasting here. Not only did we taste eight nice wines but great appetizers were provided. For $20 it's the best deal in town and they have the wine tasting monthly. read more

We've been coming to this place since they grand opened, I'm so happy they took over steam side restaurant( the previous business in this building) but I must say I was slightly bummed to loose my creek swimming spot! Whenever Higgins lake beach was too busy we'd bring our dog to this place when the previous owners retired and the building lay vacant for a bit. I prefer to have delicious food and drinks of course! This restaurant offers a spacious interior with a dining room, bar seating and outdoor seating which allows view of the cut creek which offers crystal clear teal waters similar to the gorgeous Higgins lake, the dock where you can drop in kayaks and shore fish and lately on weekends live music is jammin from 6-9pm. They post very actively on their Facebook with music lineup and specials. They have a great wine list, custom cocktails which I'm slowly trying all on the menu.. no disappointments so far but my favorite is the kayak flip. They also have a small assortment of Michigan craft beers on tap. The menu items rotate often so try not to be too bummed if a favorite item isn't there randomly. The chef/kitchen seems to love experiment and the season dictates ingredients which simply drives home that the selections are fresh and scratch made. Which is reflected in the care they put into plating, presentation and the price reflects the quality. Amongst our visits we've tried the steakhouse burger, the grilled chicken sandwich, the ribeye, the charcuterie platter, snapper cakes, every sushi roll, grilled salmon, the bacon wrapped pork kabobs, and the spinach artichoke dip. ALL AMAZING but portions lean on the side of small. If you are visiting with small children just be aware this is fairly "fine" dining so there is not a kid menu and generally not many options that are generally kid friendly. Welcome to the neighborhood, Cut River. We are happy to have you. Your food was outstanding!! I feel the price point is a bit high for what we got. We'd come back WAY more often if even just a few dollars less expensive. And the presentation wasn't there for the price, service was slow (we were hangry by the time served, food took an hour from order to arrival, but I know places are short staffed these days ) so I took off stars for that. Also the phone number doesn't work, we've tried to order carry out and can't get through. And their online menu isn't up to date. Overall, so thrilled to have Cut River and really enjoyed the food, best dinner in town, I think they just need some refinements to make it easier to get food from them as they get in the swing of things. Absolutely the best French Dip Au Jus sandwich I have ever eaten in my 64-plus years on this planet! The Au Jus was SO beefy and tasted so great that I actually DRANK what remained after eating my sandwich as if it was a cup of soup! My wife ordered the Olive Burger, and when this massive burger arrived at our table she declared she could NEVER eat ALL of it! She proved herself WRONG when she DEVOURED every morsel! The homemade potato chips were amazing with just the right amount of crunch and salt! We highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a fine dining meal for the price of a "chain" place! Unfortunately, I did not catch the server's name (or my old brain forgot it!) but she was very attentive and even offered to let my wife use one of her jackets when she became a bit chilled in the air conditioning! First time here. The food was amazing. They charcuterie was fabulous and huge for two. I had the spinach strawberry salad yummy! Husband had the Filet with Yukon gold and broccoli. Steak was cooked to perfection! To top it off we took a slice of homemade blueberry pie and blueberry cheese cake home. A huge shout out to our waitress Chris she was excellent. Extremely over priced for the food. Olive garden has better flavor at half the price. Steak wasn't dry but was not seasoned while cooked. Shrimp pasta had no flavor, I had to add salt to pasta to get flavor. Slow service, took about 35 to 40 min to get order. Family of 4 cost over $100 to eat here, wouldn't of been that bad if flavor of food matched it's high price considering the area. In short, go somewhere else if you're looking for steak or seafood. read more

I was really excited to try this place out and when I finally did, I was extremely disappointed.... I ordered the ribeye which was extremely fatty and gristly with potatoes, zucchini and mushrooms that tasted like they had sat under a heat lamp literally all day. No exaggerating. The coke was really watered down too. My kids ordered the cheese pizzas and grilled cheese. Pizzas were inedible because they said it was "too slimy". The grilled cheese was pretty good though because my other kid ate most of that... So not only was most of the food not the greatest but it was outrageously expensive. $32 for the ribeye meal, $11 for 2 children's cheese pizzas and $7 for kids grilled cheese. The waitress was really great and had no problem taking my meal off. Definitely won't be going back. read more

Best dining expert in the Higgins/Houghton area. The patio is casual and the deck along the river is a great place to hang out if there's a wait for your table. The menu consists of fresh, we'll-prepared food. The rustic corn chowder soup was better than I hoped. The Walleye special was perfectly cooked. We went for the first time with family and returned the next night when friends arrived. The wait staff was friendly and happy to accommodate our vegan guest with an adaptation. We love having this place near the cottage and hope it's here for many seasons to come. read more
