They clearly have a problem with some of the local people, some homeless, some just trying to take advantage of the store... On every visit I've been there, I've been approached for money from the men and women hanging out front. On this most recent visit, the store was smartly playing opera music loudly at the exterior of the store, it appeared to reduce the number of people just hanging out. While I was inside, one gentleman did try to pour himself a soda and walk straight out the door without paying - the cashier was professional and direct in requesting him not to steal from the store. So I do credit 7-Eleven for their efforts to maintain a positive environment, noting that they still have some opportunity to improve.

Nope, this is not one of the big, fancy convenience stores where you can get just about everything…read moreunder the sun. It's older, small, and has a limited selection of snacks, beer, etc. So why 4 stars? Well, technically, it's in Callahan (not Jacksonville), but this is the cheapest place I have found my cigarettes. If I am in Callahan, you can bet I'm going to be stopping here to pick up cigarettes. If you happen to roll your own cigarettes, you can also purchase loose tobacco and tubes (regular and menthol) here. My best friend and her significant other roll their own cigarettes, and if memory serves correctly, she told me the bag of loose tobacco is $7.95 and a box of 200 tubes is $4.25. Yep, a lot cheaper than even my cigs I buy by the pack or carton, but I'm way too lazy to be doing all that rolling nonsense, even though they have the machines nowadays that basically do all the work for you. It's smack in the middle of Park Street in Riverside, close to European Street Café, and from the outside doesn't appear much different than most corner stores you see around town. The sign on the front has seen better days, as it appears tired and faded, but to me that's not a deal breaker. I wasn't there to grocery shop, after all, so my expectations were relatively low. As it turns out....they should have been much, much lower. I was flabbergasted, really. For a second I thought the store was in the process of closing for business. Everything seemed to be in a state of disarray, from the half empty shelves to the stained and dingy floors to the unoccupied beverage coolers...it was easy to see that it's been quite some time since this place was cleaned and stocked (see pictures). Unkempt doesn't even begin to characterize the nature of the situation. It can be better described as turmoil. If the owner is indeed named "Norman," he totally let this place go over the years, and that's a sad thing for a neighborhood staple. The guy (maybe Norman?) behind the counter nonchalantly said hello as I walked in, and didn't seem the least bit uneasy about the store's appearance. It was like "Hello, we have nothing to sell, but come on in..." Ugh. How they manage to stay in business is beyond me. As much as I hate giving one star reviews, especially to local businesses, I feel nothing but compelled to do so in the case of Norman's Food Store.
