The pumps say to pay inside. Must be a safety decision I think. So I grab my purse and climb out of a tall rented truck. Walk to the door--and find a printed note taped to the door that says to pay at the pump. No way to buy gas. Thanks for wasting my time, Chevron 8695 Prunedale. What I don't know is whether this is a regular nightly practice or if it's an "unusual occurrence." I'm posting the pics. Doesn't look like a hurried "we've had an emergency" kind of note that might indicate a one-time closure. Stop at your own risk.

They would rather not admit their human error. I also never got a formal apology from the headquarters. Instead, I see now they have only self check out in the front. Perhaps my review is a big reason for that change as well as to save money on staff. It was never my intent for my review to be the result of this. I was angry and felt betrayed by a store that I had been a customer of since the beginning and would only praise before this stressful experience. I do not like self checkout, actually I detest it as it feels cold and unwelcoming. There is something to be said of a clerk who at the counter greets you, asks if you found everything that you were looking for, and perhaps asks how your day has been. Sure there is the risk of human error of which this store seemed to have had much of in the past (my past reviews and many others here on Yelp clearly show this), however, all I was hoping was more compassion and honesty from the staff. Since then, I have purchased a few items here but in the pharmacy area mostly as luckily there has yet to be self checkout in the pharmacy which is a relief! Still, I see that CVS has placed a hold on my monthly rewards....interesting. ...hmm.

A young teen named Jahmir is such a fine young man and gentleman. He was the best cashier I have ever interacted with. He told me he is working here out of love for his Father who owns the place. It's not chewy and full of tendons and grissle like most other places in Salinas. It is tender and so full of flavor. Also they are not stingy with it that's for sure. My torta was stuffed full! I can't wait to try what else they have. Yum! Update: I went back a week later at dinner time and purchased carne asada burritos and another carne asada torta. The meat was not good at all. It tasted old and overly reheated. Almost jerky like. I was bummed because I was really craving what I got the last time. I won't completely dismiss this place, and because of that first incredible torta I'll only reduce my rating to 4, but I'm definitely going to try again at another lunch break. I'm not even sure this is legal based on the 1985 settlement suit in CA, i.e., "In any case, merchants are not allowed to mislead customers, such as by falsely advertising a lower price than they actually charge or hiding any differences between credit card, debit card, and cash prices. If a merchant fails to clearly and prominently disclose before you pay or seek to pay for an item what it will charge for the item, including any additional fees, that may violate California laws prohibiting deceptive or false advertising. We got the fuel tested and turns out the gas was contaminated!! This is a $11,000-$15,000 repair. Not including our time, tow truck and uber ride. The owner and manager refuse to call back so we have filed an official claim with Exxon corporation.
