At almost 100 years old, this ride is a classic. This is one of only two rides I rode today. The other one, the wonder wheel. The two most iconic rides on Coney Island. At 10 bucks, it's a tiny bit pricey, but still reasonable. On a Sunday afternoon in August, there was still only about a 10 minute wait. I was lucky, when it was my turn to board, I got the last car on the train. I really got whipped around!. It's a fun ride. For being an almost 100 year-old wooden coaster. The drops definitely get you. Yes, it is a bumpy ride, and, on the turns, throws you around and beats you up a tiny bit, but that's the fun of the ride! And hey, the seats are cushioned! (unlike the coaster at New York, New York in Vegas. That one throws you around and beats you up, but it shouldn't, because that one is a steel coaster that should've been designed better. I think it still has all its original carts and tracks Most warned me the ride would be intense and scary, but I had to try it once. So glad I checked it off my bucketlist! lol I don't think I need to ride it again. haha The lines can get long, but they keep it moving. On a Saturday afternoon I got through to the ticket booth in maybe 15 minutes? Tickets are a little pricey at $10 per ride. Cash or credit accepted. You'll get a card (which may be reloadable for future rides). I kept it as a souvenir. You'll then walk up and scan your card before you line up. Before you board the cars, you can check in any bags/purses you have for free and they will give you a bracelet with your number to collect after the ride. I'd suggest leaving everything behind (phone, hat, sunglasses). Once you board the cart, they'll pull a lever over and secure you in. Initially, its a nice ride up and you can see a cool view of the park. Once we got to the top, every fall was crazy wild. I held on tight to the bars as I slide around the seat. I felt like my teeth rattled and I might fall out of the car. lol I guess that's teh thrill of it! The ride is less than 2 minutes and has a number of high falls. Not suggested for anyone with joint pain or a very weak stomach. Once we got off the ride I had to sit on the bench they have to rest. Phew! Sure is a wild roller coaster! Before you exit you turn in your bracelet and can pick up your bags. After you exit, you may preview your photo from the ride for purchase. I ended up getting the digital photo for $7. The ride was exciting at first, but it jerks you around and my daughter ended up slamming into me and my right hip slammed against wooden side of the roller coaster seat. I got hurt and could barely walk. I went to emergency because I was in pain but thank God I didn't break or fracture my hip. Doctor said I had a bruise hip and gave me a cane medication until I heal. I admit I am 70 years old now and should not have gotten on. But, I rode a roller coaster in Universal two years ago and everything was fine but I guess the new roller coasters are padded and this one is not. For my 1000th review, I am choosing to write about a historic landmark in Coney Island, a wooden rollercoaster 94 years young, with plenty of more years to come. This is, the Cyclone. For the first 30 years of my life, I never rode this rollercoaster, until June 2021. The irony is that I have family that live right across the street from it! I finally forked up some cash and got on. It is a wild ride. The hairpin turns, the camelback hills, the great speed you get on that first drop, it is the ideal ride for most people looking for a thrill. Yes, the lap restraint is uncomfortable, but it is a small price to pay for an otherwise unforgettable experience. All you need is one ride, and you will be forever hooked. Now it is time to wrap this review up. Go out there and enjoy this rollercoaster. Go out and do your thing. That is really what this coaster is about. It is the perfect metaphor for life itself. Have fun, take a risk once in a while, let go when you need to, but do not be afraid to hold on if you feel scared. After two minutes or so, it is over, there is no looking back. You did it. The Cyclone is great fun and surprisingly exciting for a wooden coaster. I was expecting an uncomfortable ride but instead got a memorable trip on a true piece of history! First thing I want to point out: the hours on this listing are INCORRECT. This coaster operates by Luna Park hours and is open whenever the park is open and closed whenever the park is closed. Check out the Luna Park website to ensure they will be open during your visit. I have submitted an hour update to Yelp about this, so hopefully they will fix this listing soon. Second thing I want to point out: people get confused about tickets for this. The $10 card you get at the little kiosk right outside the coaster entrance is the SAME CARD you get buying $10 worth of tickets at any other Luna Park ticket booth. So feel free to buy your card either place, it will work for Cyclone and any other Luna Park ride (but NOT the other park, aka the one with the Wonder Wheel, you will need to buy their card for that). My friend and I made sure riding this was our top priority during our recent trip to Coney Island, as it should be for any visitors. Once we figured out how the tickets/cards worked, it was an easy thing to go through the waiting area onto the platform. They only run one car at a time and have a little area for holding your bags and such. While they prefer you move all the way to the end, if you go when it's not busy and wait closer to the turnstile entrance, you can ensure you get to ride in the front seat (which we did). Honestly, the front seat provides a better experience on pretty much every coaster in the world and don't let anyone convince you otherwise. My friend and I loved every second of this wild ride, though the warped-looking lift hill itself was kind of scary-looking. I thoroughly enjoyed the Cyclone and strongly recommend it. $10 is pretty steep but it's worth it simply to support this early forerunner of the modern roller coaster. Overall: 4.5 stars ------------ Pros: - Awesome coaster and extremely fun for being wooden and a century old. - Good system for holding your valuables securely while you ride. - Wait is not long if you go at non-peak times. It was a bit scary since the safety bar that locks you into the seat doesn't actually touch you, there was a decent gap of space from my lap and chest to the padded bar and was a bit high so when first sitting down and adjusting to it you can't help but feel insecure. Still once the ride started, it was fun and I enjoyed the twists and turns going up and down. At $10 per person, per ride, this is not cheap by any means. It'll get your heart pumping, no doubt. It's certainly not the tallest or flashiest coaster, but its charm and age (born June 26, 1927) will win you over. Each ride is $10 now, and you can't pay at the Cyclone; you'll need to get some money loaded on a Luna Card. We shelled out $5 for the cheesy electronic photo taken of us while on the ride. If I were the type to have Christmas cards with family portraits on them, this photo would be on there. Rickety, creaky, and zippy are the keywords here. If you are prone to aches, I recommend popping an NSAID prior. There's an area near the boarding area where you can leave bags and such with an attendant.. Get those lungs ready! read more

Woot! I've been riding this coaster for decades now, and it just seems to get more fun every time I'm on it. Over the past few years, they've done some track work on the ride. Initially, i was skeptical, but my fears were unfounded. They kept everything that was good about the ride - the fun drops, quick turns, and overall good ride - and got rid of all the bad track and potholes that used to rearrange your spine. I feel like 99% of my reviews end up being for food or drink related things. It's refreshing to get to review something different, and a piece of history I might add. The Brooklyn Cyclone (not the Mets' single-A affiliate) is that iconic, wooden roller coaster that has stood the test of time for almost 90 years. If you're in Coney Island (like I was last night with my sister and friend) and you've never been on it, you have to take a moment to ride this historic icon. This was actually my fourth (maybe fifth?) time aboard and each time it does not disappoint. If you're used to riding coasters at Six Flags or Busch Gardens then you might be a little let down post-ride. But this roller coaster packs some serious punch when it comes to its drops and turns. Looking out over the coastline of Coney is a great sight right before you plummet and begin screaming your lungs out. And similarly to those bigger coaster parks, they've installed an on ride photo, so you can purchase that wonderful moment when you let loose on that first drop. It's a $10 ride so if you're looking for a negative, that might be it. I did not like this ride. This was my first time on any rollercoaster since the time I blocked it out of my memory as a kid. I am not a fan of rollercoasters. Actually, the ride up the rails was fine and even relaxing but the drop was tough to bear. This was not the carousel experience I was expecting. I dragged my friends on it after they were against riding anything in Coney Island and once the 2 minutes of absolute thrill were over they wanted to ride it 10 times over! They don't have a separate line for the first or last cart so it's all based off luck (or if you find someone willing to switch with you on line). First off, I have to admit, I hate roller coasters. The sensation of repeatedly being taken very high and dropped to a free fall at a sharp slope trajectory is stuff that nightmares are made of. That said, I do things, just like you, that scare the freakin' bejesus out of me just because. I mean, what is life without a little AHHH! F-ING HELL!! in it? Before you get on this roller coaster, divulge yourself of your bags and any belongings that will not comfortably fit in your pockets. Not your shirt pockets either unless they have a closure to keep the items in. There is a handy bag check right before you get into your seat. Do not bother to bring your camera on the ride. The idea that you might actually be able to take a picture while on this creaky wooden death machine is absolute foolishness. I brought my little camera and had to tuck it under my butt cheeks once the ride got going. It was like having a doody hanging out in my drawers, a discomfort that was only fleetingly experienced since most of my mind was busy screaming a death cry. My third bit of advice is to not have eaten too much boardwalk fun food. Ice cream, fried funnel cake, fried seafood whatever and lots of beer make for discomfiting playmates when you're being twisted like a pretzel through the sky. These swerves and drops are totally scary shit. It feels like you are the dice in the hand of G-d and he's working it hard for baby's new pair of shoes. The best thing to do is just Zen. On the first drop I learned that lesson. I was so freaked out, I was as tight as one of those rubber band balls you make when it gets really boring at the office. Well, that first drop doesn't fall from a level placement. It goes forward and then just a bit up and then straight down so that you actually lift upwards from your seat, suspended in air as the car begins hurling earthbound at mach speed. When you finally, thankfully, bottom out, it is possible to slam the bottom of your chin on the rail bar. Fortunately the rail bar is padded. Do not be screaming with your tongue out of mouth as this could result in very serious injury. It's a blessing and a surprise that I didn't yak myself. It helps to have your friends next to you screaming bloody murder. I had a sore throat from drinking and partying my way through Germany for 10 days and couldn't scream for myself. My friends screeching was horrifically cathartic enough to effect an emotive release for me. The crazy ride experience hearkened me to the natal birth process. Remind me to call my Mom and tell her how great she is. read more

It's my 200th Review! Feels like just two months ago I wrote my 100th. Oh wait....... it was. Eating, drinking, exploring new places and giving my opinion on things is what I do best. So this Yelp thing comes natural to me. One of the details for the business info of the Cyclone ask if this ride is good for kids. It says "Yes" but let me assure you it should be a big giant NO. Every year my parents would bring me Coney island to hit up Astroland for my birthday. Sometimes it would be in July and others in August seeing how they wouldn't remember which month it was in. Seeing how I didn't have a Bar Mitzvah or a first communion, I viewed this as my passage of becoming a man. I believe Marty Markowitz passed a law that a family's first born male must ride the Cyclone when of proper height or the family will be ostracized and sent to hell. Better known as Staten Island. I sat in the back, which was a huge mistake for my ultra skinny twelve year old frame. Then some huge heavy set man sat next to me. We were off, slowly going up these tracks. Wood is splintered. The tracks make that old clink clank sound. Higher and higher I went. The suspense was intense. Finally I reached the summit. Down I went at high speeds wondering if this old cart would fly off the track. Here comes the first turn. My neck whips back and forth, almost snapping and my body is crushed behind the weight of this fat man sitting next to me. This occurs about three more times. After the last turn I asked the man to move over. He turned to me and said "Why don't you relax and man up before I slap you." Dad always had a way with words. Over the years I went back millions of times. I love the thrill of never knowing if this is going to be my last ride. I love slightly standing, which is really stupid but lots of fun at the same time. You can notice me in the pictures they take, as the bald guy with his arms up, signs of the horn up in both hands and tongue out. I just went back this past weekend for the grand opening of the 2013 Coney Island season. The ride is still as scary and old as ever. Though they now have a new lap bar which makes sure you can't stand up and also damages your private area. YAY for safety! So no do not bring you small child to this attraction unless you are punishing them. Do come by if you want to check out one of the most iconic landmarks Brooklyn has to offer and love a great thrill. In fact it's a pilgrimage for everyone to make at least once in their life. Up, up and awaaaaay, my beautiful, my beautiful Cyclooooone!! 900th review FTW! This is the roller coaster any child should cut their teeth on (not that I did. I was far too chicken). This is the coaster that all those insane upside down, standing, twisty, twenty story deals will never ever be: Brutal. Authentic. Timeless. It's not only a wonder that it's still fucking standing but the fact that it's been throwing people around for like 100 years means it stands the test of time. It may seem like one giant death rattle but that's just the sound of the old wooden coaster at work. You won't die, you just think you will. And that first drop is the most exquisite terrifying petite mort you're ever going to feel. Coolest thing? There are several staff members waiting for riders at the end offering you a discount (you just stay in your car- no waiting on line) so that second, third and fourth joy ride is even sweeter. You will be under the influence of the Cyclone (surely this is the closest thing to a crack high?) so you will ride again. Much like yoga, it's best to practice the Cyclone on an empty stomach. read more

I cannot say enough about this roller coaster. It is over 90 years old in 2021 and i believe the only real changes made since 1927 or whatever year it opened, was padded seats and other padding in each car, and a type of restoration. I am afraid of heights and roller coasters but i went on this around 1990, and again in May 2021 for the second time. Unlike almost any other roller coaster, there is a real sense of danger while riding the Cyclone. You have a lap bar that is over your legs and locks into place, which feels like minimal protection, and the ride does feel "out-of-control". Because i am tall, I plastered my arms to the front of the car to steady myself. If i had not done that, I could have risked injury to my neck or back, that is how jarring and wild the ride feels. All I can suggest is, hold on to the lap bar for dear life to avoid being thrown forward or left and right. You really, for your safety, should push against the front of the car or lap bar so your back is firmly against the back of your car, to avoid flying all over the place. That being said, the same risk and out-of-control feeling you get from the Cyclone is what makes it so great and thrilling. You don't ease into turns, you zoom through them with no regard. The first drop is the most incredible part of the ride. On some drops, especially the first big drop, you feel as if you are about to fly off the front of the roller coaster, which is a sensation I believe they were intending to give riders. I sat in the front car. There is no way to reserve the front car, like the signs say. However, if you want to sit in the front car, I suggest getting there at 1PM right as they open, when there are less lines. If you see someone already seated in the front car and they wave you in, don't scan your ticket. You can always wait for the next ride to ensure you get the first car. Stalling like this only really works right as they open up at 1pm. Even 15 or 20 minutes after the ride opens for the day, it starts getting crowded and this tactic becomes pretty much impossible. Overall, a legendary roller coaster, thrilling ride, possibly even dangerous in how jarring the ride is, so hold on for dear life. However, the out-of-control feeling you get while riding it is what makes the damned thing so iconic. Other reviews online will say that some people who have ridden a ton of other much faster roller coasters are the most afraid of and intimidated by the Cyclone. I still think if you can get over your fear, it is a thrilling experience that everyone should at least try once. Note: You do NOT need to pay separately for entry to the Cyclone or Wonder Wheel, despite what it may seem. You can go to the Boardwalk entrance and pay $10 per ride for the Wonder Wheel per person. You can also pay $10 per ride for the Cyclone. The Cyclone and Wonder Wheel are part of 2 different parks. Remember, you DO NOT NEED a $50 ticket per person for a 2 hour unlimited pass to ride the Cyclone and Wonder Wheel, JUST SHOW UP. Both are only $10 each per person per ride. I sometimes think to myself, did they purposefully make it seem online like you need to pay for a 2 hour pass? I am sure a lot of people get suckered in by paying a fortune online for those expensive passes. I suggest getting here as early as you can, and if you can avoid buying online, do it. You don't necessarily need the 2 hour passes which are expensive. If you don't want to buy tickets online, I suggest getting to the Cyclone at 1PM just as they open (they might change hours now) and get to the Wonder Wheel at 2PM when they open (also hours might have changed). read more

Some fear the Cyclone. Some love it. Some, like myself, think it's a death trap! I'm proud to be part of the elite crew that can say they've ridden it and survived (though barely), however I can't say I'd ever pay $8 to subject myself to such frightening torture ever again. My friend Liz and I came to Coney Island to do the touristy thing, so obviously we were gonna ride this infamous 'coaster. Feeling like badasses, and not understanding the magnitude of such a decision, we chose the last cart on purpose. Bad idea! As the ride attendant locked us in and warned us of the dangers of this "rough seat," we knew we'd made a mistake. He literally told us not to let our heads "snap back because people hit their heads all the time." Cool! I felt safe. But it was too late. No turning back. During the ascent, the island looks happy and peaceful. Children are laughing, the ferris wheel is spinning, and clowns are smiling. As you make it over the first hump at the top, those children get abducted by sex offenders, the ferris wheel burns to the ground destroying everything in its path, and that clown turns fucking evil and starts laughing in your face. During the first dip (and then again on each one after that) I saw a flash of white and felt my spine compress. Then we'd descend again and the only things keeping me from ejecting from my seat were my thighs jamming up against the restraint bar. I looked over to my friend to see if I was alone in my struggle. I could tell she was afraid for her life as well. All we could do was look at each other with fear in our eyes, hoping for it to be over. In hindsight, I really wish I'd paid the $10 for that 5x7 picture. *sigh* Now you might not believe me, but I'm not a wimp. And I love rollercoasters! But the resulting welt on my right thigh was HUGE. Liz suffered a stiff neck for the remainder of the weekend, and I literally couldn't put weight on my leg without heavy amounts of alcohol in my system for 24 hours after the Cyclone. Oh well, though. Our wounds healed and we didn't die. This 'coaster's a piece of history, and I hope it stays there forever! But they really need to make some improvements for safety sake. read more

My mom used to love Coney Island. Love it. I hated it. I hate sand in the chicken. No matter what I did, there was always sand in the chicken. I blamed Coney Island. But everyone loved the Cyclone. Except me. People would ask "where did you go Jamel?" and I would reply "Coney Island" and tell them I went on the roller coaster. When they asked what it was like, I would say "Imagine a roller coaster punched you in the face" and then tell them that you get whiplash, it was going to fall apart soon and that I almost died. Now I am a grown man. When I go to Coney Island, I walk past the cyclone real slow and give side eyed looks, cause I remember when I was younger and it used to punch me in the face. Literally. The bar would hit you in the face. People call it the "grand daddy" and "grand father" of roller coasters. I don't know many grandfathers that are going around whipping people's spines out and punching them in the face. It was a serious roller coaster then, and it is now. I recently went to make peace with the Cyclone and we were doing well. Then it punched me in the face. The cyclone is gonna pay. You wait and see. No one punches me in the face. If you want to get rid of someone, take them on the cyclone. read more
